Obsidian (KOTOR 2, Fallout New Vegas, The Outer Worlds, Grounded, Pillars of Eternity) is responsible pretty much for the resurgence of the cRPG genre and by extension Baldur's Gate 3, Pillars of Eternity's 2012 Kickstarter was so successful it rejuvenated a genre of games that were once considered long dead and brought tens of new titles and spiritual successors of old games into the modern day. Owlcat's Pathfinder games/Rogue Trader, inXile's Bard Tales and Wasteland sequels and Larian's Divinity games and their pinnacle of the genre Baldur's Gate 3. Nobody would have tested the waters if Obsidian hadn't gone independent to crowdfund the most successful Kickstarter campaign at the time and release the first Pillars of Eternity which would pave the way for Avowed, the return of cRPG games and the proof-of-concept that games can be successful without relying on a publisher and giving up creative control. Although Avowed will not be a cRPG and is basically looking like a more smoother playing Elder Scrolls game with a smaller scale I'm really pumped for this game. Pillars of Eternity 1 and 2 are really excellent games, with a great universe in Eora, to the point where some kind of reaction to the World of Eora on the channel could be super interesting, it breaks the typical mold of fantasy games by being set closer to an age of colonialism (1600's-ish) than simply the Dark Ages and feels like a mix of both, with a lot of Eastern-drawn themes of spiritual reincarnation mixed with groundbreaking scientific progress reminiscent to something like spiritual stem cell research within its' fantasy world as a parallel. P.S: They're also being intentionally tight-lipped about the character you play as it relates to the story and implication from the last games' endings that would be considered spoilers.

To be fair though PoE2 has some issues. Mainly the last act. Plus you have Tyranny. Hoping they don't screw it up. Also kind of agree with BG3 but really that's more on Larian. I mean Divinity isn't a typical CRPG and that was the jump off point for BG3. Yeah the crpg market blooming helped but I kind of doubt DtOS woul have suffered much if Pillars never dropped.

@@Adanu191 don't get me wrong I love tyranny and poe2 but tyranny was never finished and it shows which I can make all the excuses in the world but that's a pretty critical fault. Poe2, the final boss is horrible and that's entirely on the relationship system. Leaning into something that didn't work doesn't inspire confidence.

Honestly really hope this game is good. Pillars of Eternity was one of the better CRPGs out there and would love to see what they do with it, but I have a lot of concerns. Mainly, Obsidian doesn't have a great track record with epic rpgs. When it's more character driven, they shine but this seems more of a plot that relies on fighting a more esoteric threat and they don't do that as well. That and player customization seems thin. Although I guess that's an issue of it comming from a crp series.

It's great that Obsidian is making a brand new Skyrim style open world RPG. They're well known for making Star Wars Knights of The Old Republic, Outer Worlds, Pillars Of Eternity and Neverwinter Nights. They're also the ones who made Fallout New Vegas.
