Hands down, for me it's Teledji Adeledji. Sure, like Asahi he gets what's coming to him just as you think you can't despise him any more, but at least Asahi was loyal to someone other than himself. It isn't much to put him over Teledji but it's something.

i despised him, yes he gets a little better, but the introduction, androgynous twins speaking cryptically about knowing the truth, absurd anime cliche. rich kid who is a prodigy , ok so he is wesley crusher. and he is super rich, because of course. They did eventually make him slightly less infuriating, and alisae is so good she kind of makes up for him, but for a character who is actually fairly genuine and caring, he is like a car-crash of anime tropes that I had a hard time overcoming.

Agreed, 100%. Alphinaud is the definition of a Gary Stu. He has a special appearance and special powers and a special heritage and a special destiny and he's a walking humblebrag and on and on and on. I got goddamn sick of him right off the bat and never liked him more. The plot exists to flatter him. Even the stupidass Crystal Braves wasn't actually his fault, because of course his biggest debacle couldn't be because of a mistake! That would imply that _he makes mistakes!_ Ugh. Alphinaud is the f*cking worst.

I was confused by this question because there’s two different versions: Characters that were written to be hated (Varis, Asahi) or characters you don’t like the writing of (Amon). Granted the worst for me is that racist from Archer quest. That guy sucked almost made me quit maining Archer.

It's so funny because Silvairre was actually my very first every FFXIV crush. I started as an Archer was back in 2016. He holds a special place in my heart XD I just find this comment hilarious.

Asahi is definitely #1 on my list. I think the thing that offends me the most about him is that we never get to satisfyingly kick his ass. My favorite part of the Tsukiyomi fight is the flashback, where I can go HAM on his image.

SPOILERS FOR THE SHB TRIAL STORY Valens is the most unlikeable, evil, despicable excuse of a living being I have ever encountered in this game. I didn't think I could truly hate any characters up until I played this questline. Even when I found someone unlikeable, I liked learning more about them and how they came to be the way they are. But Valens... That monster filled me with so much rage that I genuinely wanted to punch my screen during every cutscene he featured in. I really liked the trials in this series, but this is one story I doubt I'll ever play in NG+ because my hatred for Valens is so strong.

THIS. I think they really succeeded with writing him since they were going for unlikeable, and they got it. Like, *nothing* that makes all of the others have even a scrap of sympathy or understanding - he's not someone who was just made that way by his own trauma, circumstances, anything - he's even worse than Asahi at the end.

I did like how Valens really showed the underlying problems with the way Garleans are conditioned. While nothing condones his actions, he was projecting the extremes of the societal norms the Empire was built on. Had other powerful factions not been embroiled in their own disputes he may have been stripped of his position. Or possibly not, he was just disposing of filthy savages in the end.

Valens Varro is hands the THE WORSE NPC FFXIV has ever created. More so then Asahi

I haven't played past ARR, but so far my most hated NPC is a relatively minor one known as the Coeurlclaw King. You're introduced to them from the Delivery Moogle Quests, and they're one of the few genuinely awful characters you never get to truly put down and can do nothing to really help the other NPCs he's negatively affected the lives of, so he pretty much gets away with everything he's done, and being a minor NPC from a ARR side quest, he ends up one of those examples of "bad things the WoL can never resolve". Even the FATE he's part of isn't easy to trigger or beat, so you can't even take meager solace in giving him your own non-canon ending (in fact, you're likely to be the one who gets trounced if you try to fight him alone).

I originally thought they were villains when they first appeared. XD Then after that, it took a little longer for Alisae to grow on me because of her personality, but by ShB (probably even SB, I can't remember because I'm taking WAY too long to catch up with everyone in this game), I was, and still am, willing to tank an Ultima to the face for either of them.

I'm sure a lot of people have Ilberd on here but for me? Laurentius and Yuyuhase are the Crystal Braves I really wanted to hurt. I can't stand Fourchenault who may have had good reasons for standing his ground but there was no excuse for being such a jerk about it. Lahabrea was pretty lousy, too. The other Ascians were allowed to have arcs. He was just "oooh, I'm so evil!11!1!!" Of course, there's a special place in the blender for Ser Zephirin, but I'm sure that goes without saying. Obviously, they can't kill Y'Shtola because there just aren't enough potential waifus in the game. My wife plays and she pointed out just how many hot guys there are: Aymeric, Hien, Raha, Estenien, even Thancred if you can sober him up. That's without even looking at the baddies. The roster of shippable ladies is almost empty. Lyna? Maybe Kan-E? We don't even get to spend that much time with them. So, mommy Shtola can't die.

Fourchenault was rather frustrating because there wasn't ever any reason given for why he disowned his kids. "Oh? You just wanted to keep them safe? Well why would you cast them out which would pretty much guarantee that they would take the less peaceful route of just getting on the ship when it was ready and go to the moon?" If it was just because he was angry and couldn't help but lash out I'd have appreciated him admitting as much.

To be honest, people would like some npcs a lot more if they wouldn't write SHORT STORIES in the deepest corner of the Lodestone! There are so many IMPORTANT informations about characters, it's actually unbelievable!! Did you know Lyse's sister died PROTECTING young Fordola who ran away from the Imperial city??? And they NEVER said ANYTHING in the msq!?

"Kiuka", for sure I know most won't know him, but he's an NPC in the Doman Enclave who can give you a Hien card. I had to beat him over 200 times before he gave me that card. Even if someone wants to destroy the universe, I can't hate them as much as this vile scumbag. When I got the Triple Triad mount, I did warp to the Doman Enclave, and while riding on said mount, I laughed in the face of that disgusting dork!

Disliking Moogles (at least the bunch that reside in Churning Mists) is just PTSD speaking at this point. If you haven't picked "Piss off, kupo" at least for the catharsis factor, or rejoiced when that one daily where the Ishgardians prank the moogles with exploding kupo nuts turns up, you are either a masochist or haven't done the Moogle dailies yet. Gridanian moogles are still somewhat annoying, but compared to Churning Mists moogles they are saints.

Valens Van Varro. To me, he is the one who managed to out-asshole Asahi. If we count not just what is shown, but also what is implied, he raced at top speed right past cartoonish evil and straight into complete monster territory. Racist? Check. Sadist? Check. Coward? I absolutely hated Lyse because of the character assassination of Yda. She went from the fun, quirky comic relief to your standard Mary Sue. In Stormblood, she became the embodiment of that one meme template despite doing literally nothing but climbing a tower and waving a flag around. WoL: "I liberated Ala Mhigo." Lyse: "You liberated Ala Mhigo? *Lyse looks at Ala Mhigo* Lyse: "I liberated Ala Mhigo."

For me it's Asahi. He's just the shittest character in the entire story for me. 5.x/6.0 SPOILERS ================= Also Asahi!Fandaniel. The other two Fandaniel's we've encountered by the end were okay characters. It was enjoyable getting to know Hermes, and finding out that Amon was also a reincarnation of Hermes was a neat little callback considering Hermes' research into life. Then you've got the version of him wearing Asahi's meat suit. Just as insufferable and "omg he's so insane and unhinged" as the original Asahi. I never empathised with Zenos more than when he was barely tolerating Fandaniel's existence.

For the most part, if a character is supposed to be disliked and you hate him, I would say writers, actors and animators did an awesome job. Wouldn't know which one I'd pick there are some. Propably not one of the "villains", because they did what they are supposed to do. It might actually also go to Lyse since she is supposed to be a main character in a whole addon but the best scene in said addon is without her. Sidenote: I love Tataru. I think she is very interesting, she never takes the spotlight but her arc trying to do more, but failing (that was heartbreaking for me honestly - great that her Carbuncle later comes back as a boss with great music :D) and discovering her skills to help was really great - and she can actually be intimidating in her own way wich is really interesting since she seems so small and cute. Similarly I loved Nanamo for her arc of learning - her arc to become a capable leader who understands her country/city is way better compared to Lyse which is odd considering Lyse hat a whole addon dedicated to that arc - her scene at the end of that addon on top of the palace (I think it was, right?) was SO MUCH BETTER compared to anything Lyse got in my opinion, it showed her growth as a character and her understanding of her best friend so to speak, was emotional hitting the right spots for me. Good for Nanamo, disappointing for the "main character" of the addon (and yes, that is the scene I mentioned earlier)

When you asked that question I was sure that would open the doors for people to hate on G'raha and of course it did and I'm PRETTY SURE half of those are just literally to annoy the fangirls that are loud about it (hi I'm loud about being a G'raha fangirl). OTHER THAN THAT I could make a 5 hour long essay about how he wasn't "better as the Exarch" and didn't really change much and can actually show you video footage of many moments as the Exarch of him simping for the WoL just as much as he does today. But keeping it short - Exarch is just G'raha with severe depression and chronic pain :( LEAVE G'RAHA TIA ALONE!1!! (I do admit I'm very frustrated at EW patches about how they're writing him - they're not)

I was new to the game as people were telling me in Crystal Towers to "pay attention to G'raha he's amazing etc" and I liked him a lot because of that. Because I was told I would. And when Exarch was revealed to not a lot of surprise, I was like damn yeah the Exarch is really cool so Raha will too. But post ShB and into EW, I think the only time I really liked him was in the post Vanaspati dungeon where he showed his Exarch side in his tactical and commanding presence. Outside of that, there is just things I do not enjoy and places him as the Scion I care for the least and wish we had the Exarch personality back. Your opinion and such is hella valid. But so are people who don't like them!!! Assuming half of the people who don't enjoy him are just doing it to annoy people is dismissing their views. I dislike his clinginess, his quirkyTM responses and actions, and a few other minor things. I just feel uncomfortable with the idea of my character and even me as a person being idolized by an ally and friend to a whole other degree, and that's why quite a few people I know including myself aren't the biggest fan of him. But it is a to each their own sorta thing, and I would rather put others on a pedestal to enjoy their favorites than dismiss their opinion

G'raha not being your favorite character is one thing, but going out of your way to say you "hate" him, that's different and for me it's either because the person just think it's cool to hate on popular characters, or just lacks a lot of empathy/text interpretation skills. How can you *hate* this nicely written, kind and good character that really didn't do anything ingame to deserve it? For me it's such a huge red flag.@@SuperSnivMatt As for the "Exarch personality", I stand by the point that this DID NOT CHANGE. The Exarch sacrificed 100+ years of his life and health to save you especifically. He spends a lot of his time as the Exarch singing you praises, there's many many dialogues that point out how you inspired him and how a lot of things he's build and done are thinking of the WoL. He was just a bit more formal about it. Now that he doesn't need to hide and gets to live a second life, we get the impression that he changed, but he didn't. His "quirky responses" are there ever since we found out he was G'raha, even when he was still the Exarch - though from what the people of the Crystarium say about him, he always did many "quirky" things. And he is NOT clingy, he just expresses he likes to spend time with us a bit more than the other Scions. That's not being clingy.

very unpopular opinion probably but i cannot STAND hien. and it's not the writing per se, though he suffers very much from lyse syndrome in a couple of ways. the thing that really grinds my gears is his refusal to punish yotsuyu's tormentors acting like suddenly he doesn't have the authority to. buddy. pal. you are LITERALLY in charge of this place. if you can't bring justice, who else will??

Ilberd. With the smug way he betrayed the Scions and the way he engineered the mass death of his own followers just to call forth a half-formed demigod to murder the continent I feel like we never got a good enough resolution. I wanted to pound the snot out of him and then lock him up in a jail cell so he could see us liberate Ala Mihgo while he rotted and was forgotten, knowing that if he had played his cards right, not been such a scumbag, that he could've done so much better and been beloved by his people instead of cursed for his traitorous ways. Instead he got almost everything he wanted and then jumped to his own death so he wouldn't have to live with the consequences. Even smacking him around in the level 87 dungeon wasn't satisfying enough of a beatdown, I wanted to see him be an actual boss and have a cutscene where we rub it in his face how he eff'd up.

Not easy to answer. But if I think hard about it, I would say I dislike Zenos the most even more than Asahi. Why? Because Asahi is written to be hated and very well written in that matter, also the voice actors no matter the language were phenomenal! Zenos on the other hand was just an obstical with no deeper meaning for the story overall and was just existing somewhere outside of some fights. He just exists and was so overhyped to be "the rival". I guess you could say I dislike him more because of the things he could have been but never was.

I agree with you about Z. There's a final cutscene from HW which he makes a cameo and I was so hyped about him bc I knew he must be the bad guy, then my dissapointment was immeasurable by the lack of screen time and looked forward when he's going to appear again. Then post StB happens and my hype was growing once more..until ShB that is; his charm was starting to fade away and find him just a character that it's here for unknown reasons. Imo he was under used or used just to make the story a little longer (yes, I'm looking at EW)

Papalymo. Every single instances that I remember of him being with Yda, he seemed to called her dumb and generally being dismissive of her. Felt like straight out abuse and that was really uncomfortable seeing as he was one of the "good guy". Hermes was kinda weird, like they show him in a sort of sympathetic light and yeah, sure, he needs a hug but a hug is way more than he deserves. Dude was a psychopath.

The issues with Lyse are that she is effectively two people in Stormblood. You have the one written by a writer who only knows how to fridge women (Ysayle, Menphilia) and an actual woman writing her (All of Yanxia/Steppe/Kugane) as the other. The second one she plays the player insert perfectly, the one who needs to learn how to be a proper insurgent, to understand that you can't just be suddenly patriotic, but have to have a real leg in the fight and learns to let others help her and to learn from them, and then you have derp-Lyse in Ala Mhigo, and she only gets SLIGHTLY better in the second half of Ala Mhigo. She becomes a better character once the full writing team change happens in the post-MSQ SB content. But it is like.. man, such a missed opportunity to have a really strong female character cause they got too stuck in on the "critically acclaimed" Heavensward expac writing method.

@@LiorVolf Eh, it would have been a horrible story even compared to what we got. Minfilia requires finesse to write well, and Oda wasn't capable of writing female characters without fridging them. I think what we got was salvageable, and could probably have been amazing if the story team let the new (at the time) Ishikawa cook. The best parts of Stormblood are her's, entirely. The Post MSQ, Yanxia/Steppe, are all her and the new writing crew. They've sent me on so many inane pointless jobs to go talk with people I don't care about and will not remember after they've left my presence. The tediousness of their quests is beyond criminal. Pick up a link pearl, and flippin Call Cid, Alphinaud. I don't need to travel across the damn world to pass him a damn message.

Hot take. Zenos is a more interesting villain than FF7s Sephiroth. I never understood how people could like Sephiroth but hate on Zenos. Like, same pretty boy face on a ripped body, creepy as fuck, and are way too interested in Cloud/WoL. And Zenos still has the more interesting back story imo. I can vibe with people who hate both of them, though. Also, my most hated character has got to be Hermes. It's one thing to be depressed. It's another thing to be conceited and stupid enough to shove that same depression onto Meteion and force her to find the answer to a question so vague. I was thrilled when Asahi dragged him further into aetherial hell.

*Kinda sorta EW spoilers*; On the subject of characters dying and coming back and dying and coming back I think what really concerns me about the writing for the past two expansions is how we seem to have forgotten how loss is written into this story, and I find myself wanting the best of both worlds, in ShB and EW the Scions have felt more like a family than a group of worldsavers and on the one hand I love that, but I can't help but feel strayed away from the pain and loss and moving forward still from ARR, HW and SB. It feels like at this point all of the Scions have plot armour, something I at first only contributed to the WoL and Alphinaud, now feels extended to everyone.

I don't think they necessarily need to kill people to make an engaging story. However, using fake deaths too much gets a bit annoying after a while. We're at a good spot in the story right now for some of the Scions to go off and do other things for a bit and I thought that was going to be what happens with the Twins. Now every one of them is following us across the ocean for some reason. Hope there's a good plot hook for that.

People miss so much context around Zenos he is a much deeper character than people give him credit he is a creature of instinct who wants so badly to feel like he isn't alone at the top of the world, he wants an equal to himself for the sole purpose of no longer being alone. Being so terribly alone for so long has broken and stunted his mind to the point he has no reference for how he should be to one he could call a friend. Yes he is intensely evil but he knows nothing else. By the Endwalker he is in my top 5 villains of the whole franchise with Kefka, Seymour, and Sephiroth.

The body-snatch moment was cool and opened up some pretty messed up ideas if even the WoL could be taken over like that, but ultimately it went nowhere. By the end of Endwalker I just felt like telling Zenos to 'f*** off'. He wasn't a threat anymore, he was just an annoyance.

I tend to separate characters I hate into two categories; characters I'm supposed to hate and characters I'm supposed to like but hate. The first is Asahi. They did a really good job at making him so reviling, and in the patches not less. Valens is a close second, but the lack of a va really makes it hard for me to hate him more. I don't really hate any characters we're supposed to like. Cid is the closest, but that's more of him being a wet paper towel character wise than actually being dislikable. I've never wanted a character to shut up more than JP Tutaru, but that's her voice being grating not the actual character.

The only character I can safely say I hold a sort of dislike for is Zenos, right up until the last time I fought him. My opinion of him changed at that point. Aside from that, I found the moogles kind of annoying in Heavensward.

Can't say I truly dislike or hate any particular npc in the game. While there are npcs that I feel less for than most, they are mostly inoffensive or have one or two cool things about them that rescues them from the scrappy heap. Even the characters designed to be despised don't really count, because I like them in how much I dislike them. Though if I had to pick one, I think I'd go with Sadu, and by extension the Dotharl tribe. When I first learned of the tribe, I imagined the most extreme terrifyingly blood crazed individuals that would make even Zenos blush in embarrassment. Those in game, however, are more like the jocks of the steppe if anything. They still have some cool elements like their belief in reincarnation, but I still find them a bit annoying at times.

G'raha (mommamia) Tia wasn't my fav character later on, but my absolute least favorite person was ARR Alphinaud, or as I call him "Alpha Nerd", mainly because he was so pretentious, and being voiced by Sam Riegel didn't help.

Definitely some answers I expected, but I think if a character is supposed to be hated (Asahi, Valens, Zenos, etc) then pointing to them just doesn't feel right. The "character you're supposed to like but don't" ring with me much louder. That in mind, for meeeee, that character is Y'shtola. I guess part of it is because I never got why so many people swear by her being their favorite character? I see people mentioning her plot armor here but like, that doesn't bother me. She just isn't fun or interesting. I dunno, to me, every scion has their moments where they confide in you, you see them open up, share secrets, you comfort them, they comfort you. But Y'shtola never really hits those notes. Even in scenes were people try to argue the contrary, most of the 'care' she expresses towards the WoL often feels like it's coming from more of a "You're too useful to us so make sure you take care of yourself". If not that, the few times she does seem to express care is to other people behind your back, and since the Scions are supposed to be this big family, that's not the relationship I want to have, y'know? it's just all business all the time with her, and even the 6.1 stuff where people point to her getting more interesting, I disagree. I want to laugh WITH her, not AT her. As is, that woman wouldn't know fun if a circus chocobo ran her over, and just constantly brings the mood down, it feels like.

For me, it will forever be Misija Votyasch from the Bozjan Questline. Traitor and psychopath both, her death, in the end, was not penance, it was the easy way out for what she did. She had it easy under the Garlean rule, she was given safety and opportunities, but just a look at the other citizens, those who are still alive. Were conscripted, enslaved and tortured. Just looking at the GBK job quest should paint a pretty clear picture of what it was like for the average citizen. The Bozjan incident is one of the most horrific and bone-chilling events that has happened in-game, keeping in mind that 99% of the population got brutally murdered. Because the Garleans thought that testing a weapon of mass destruction so close to a capital where innocent lives were present was fine. And Misija sided with them. Not to say what she did to the blades after getting them enthralled. In the expansion where we find a cure for tempering, she gets the blades into a horrifying monstrosity, that is so bad, that it scarred people. And she did it fast enough to ensure we couldn't even attempt to save them. What happened to her ancestor was bad, but what she ended up doing was thousands of times worse. She is truly irredeemable in my eyes, and you bet I chose Basaljen to end her cause I didn't even care enough. By contrast, I wanted to kick Zenoses ass throughout EW.

For me Minfilla, that coattail riding hussy had no reason to be leading the Scions. The fact that tried to make Lyse a Minfillia clone is probably why I didn't care for as much, but at least she put her life on the line (on purpose.... not just cause she got kidnapped) However I will admit that Minfilla 2.0 aka Ryne was bad ass, not afraid to help in a fight, and an amazing addition to the Scions of the 1st.

I do understand the dislike for G'raha. After immediately coming back after his big sacrifice moment, it's felt like he's just kind of there and not contributing what you'd expect from someone who is over a hundred years old and pulled an entire world back from the brink of death. There's a few exceptions where the Exarch slips out but the man is way too uwu soffboi precious smol bean 99% of the time and it irks me to no end. He could have stayed gone and genuinely nothing would have changed except we'd maybe have some personal consequences for once.

I can't really say that the moogles deserve the hate because they have always been the mascots of the franchise and never once they have been straight up annoying to the main characters, they are like living plushies and helpful on top of that. The moon rabbits on the other hand... they were wayyyyy better in final fantasy 4 because THEY WERE PRESENT ONLY IF WE FOUND THEM AND HAD 1 UTILITY WHICH WAS RENAMING OUR CHARACTERS but in 14 my god... Everytime they appeared in the story it just broke the immersion (like that one scene in Garlemald where we finally get a reason why Zenos act the way he does even tho it is pretty lame) and boy was it unbearable.

So I am a return player who left at the end of stormblood cause of law school and having to focus, I got back into the game though of august this year, and thought to just start fresh, new character and take my time. I am also the type of every map must be free of all quest markers, so I’m doing all quests and get to churning mists and I legit got like throw my controller angry cause every moogle quest I completed would just be another one that popped up where I wanted to grab them and yell “STOP! Just tell me all the things you want now and I’ll do them at once! Stop making me fetch things!!” to the point that now, I don’t do all the quests, plus only, so my other jobs now will have some good quest exp saved up to work on

I didn’t really like y’shtola until post stormblood/shadowbringers, if I’m being honest. ‘Hate’ wouldn’t be the right word at all, but she felt like a nothing-character until she started showing some sass. I did like her history with Matoya, though. And with Lyse, I think the main issue I have with stormblood as a whole was how ala mhigo got shafted in comparison to doma. They made fantasy Japan more marketable because it’s all a big ff6 reference and gave more attention to it while still trying to make Lyse seem like the main character??? I don’t even think she should’ve become the leader of the resistance because her whole point is she lacks the leadership skills her sister and father had- and that’s okay!! M’naago is right there, she should’ve become the successor while Lyse continued to fight for the resistance as herself

Minfilia, the most useful thing she did was die, don't get me wrong that was super helpful. She always felt like just an exposition machine and damsel in distress constantly. They said she was the leader but that fell through as soon as Alphinaud appears.

I'm never sure about questions like these, so I'll comment along. [SPOILERS] Asahi: one of the easy picks, but I still find it entertaining knowing how it all unfolds. And his pose bending over to get face-to-face with my Lala is hilarious: "even your face, it vexes me.... (õ_õ)" Lyse: I'm playing through StB on my latest alt and yeah she's so annoying trying to be a diplomat in act 2 of 4.0. Will have to continue more to refresh my memory. G'raha: I can see why, I have this a little bit with Haurchefant, who I noticed on my 2nd playthrough being almost too nice immediately. Obvious in hindsight they were making the WoL like him. Zenos: Never truly liked him, and the simping by the player base made me dislike him more. But I respect his position in the story now and it makes early Zenos better too, from what I'm seeing on my re-run. Still, with the mirror analogy I'm much less the target audience than other players are with the whole 'seeking challenge' thing. Y'shtola: Slightly overrated at worst, and for a long time I felt she should have died or experienced serious repercussions after life stream #2. Gaia: I haven't played through the raid, so I can only say she looks weird imo. But if Ryne's cool with her then I am too. Loporrit/Moogle: the novelty wore off the Moogles for me, plus they just annoy the WoL with chores, but Loporrits will probably stay my fav for a good while. Accept no substitutes! Athena: yeah pretty bad, though her saying the Ultima line "the world shall trembaaaal" will always be funny. So who am I missing personally...Ser Charibert, plus that old priest that pushed the girl off the Vault. Also Valens.
