Awakened Emilia vs Pandora | Re:Zero Season 2 Episode 19 Review/Analysis

Emilia's trial comes to an end. Her true power is revealed after Pandora tricks Betelgeuse into killing Fortuna. Despite Pandora's Authority of Vanity, Awakened Emilia kills her repeatedly and ends up freezing herself and the entire forest. Here's my review of Re:Zero Season 2 Episode 19, AKA Re:Zero Episode 44.

Echidna said it best in the light novel; Pandora's Authority is disgusting. She uses it in this new episode to cheat death repeatedly as Fortuna attacks her, and then once more to trick Betelgeuse into killing Fortuna. This event causes Betelgeuse to transition fully into insanity, while Emilia loses control of her frustration and freezes her surroundings permanently. Before retreating, Pandora promises to see Emilia again. Thankfully, she wasn't able to open the Seal. Emilia's trial ends, and Subaru confronts Roswaal with Otto and Garfiel. Also, they finally played the new opening.

I thought Satella might be Emilia's mother until now. Echidnut really made me realize the most important and obvious reason why Satella can't be Emilia's mother. Emilia's half-elf, and Satella is also half-elf. The only way Satella could ever have a half-elf child is if the father was also half-elf, which we know he isn't. That should've been pretty obvious, but I just forgot that Satella was also half-elf. You can't really blame me though with all the stuff the anime said. Actually, it was the stuff that the anime said that started making me think Emilia might be Satella's daughter in the first place.

One thing that I thought was that Satella could possibly be Emilia herself, or even, surprisingly enough, her daughter. The first one: We know that Satella existed before, back like 400 years ago, but, we also know that Satella is one that is able to control time. My theory thinks that she fell in love with Subaru so much, and if you watch Echidnut's video on the ending, she wanted to keep him here after he left. So, she obtained her authority and moved into the past in order to be able to save him, but she went too far back, and the use of her power, as well as her extreme love for him, made her go insane. S2 E9 shows that Satella really loved Subaru, and not anyone else, so this could make sense. The time also makes sense, knowing Subaru can travel through time. The insanity could also be supported due to the fact that Subaru would've gone crazy if not for his friends, which Satella might not have had since she was trying to keep secret she was the from the future. Second one: If we use Echidnut's theory on the ending again, then I think this could be supported. If Emilia had a daughter with another half-elf, and the daughter wants to thank Subaru so much for being important for her mother's life, then I think that this could be possible. The love and power resulting in her insanity, as well as the time part could be the same as my last theory. Or, Satella could just be a random half-elf who Emilia coincidentally looks like.

Yeah, I think Satella is probably Emilia, I mean, in one episode Satella says that she remembers holding hands with Subaru, which obviously never happened. So I’m guessing Subaru was originally transported to the re:zero world by unknown means (without the return by death power), met up with Emilia, and they had some sort of relationship, maybe something happened so Emilia became the witch of greed, then Subaru died, so she re-wound time, gave Subaru the return by death power upon entering the re:zero world, and that’s how the story starts. That would explain why she loves Subaru so much, and why she gave him the return by death power. I dunno

I guess she figures Fortuna is the source of the promise and given Pandora can remove effects just by removing their causes, it seems like a logical continuation. If she was troubled by the result, someone arguing with her could say this is proof just because you do something once doesn't mean it's safe to continue. Since she seems to enjoy watching Emilia's expression as a consolation prize, I don't think she was troubled by her result despite not getting what she originally came for.

If I may comment, I want to mention that although Subaru originally wanted to, it's impossible for him to pass the second trial. In order for him to pass the second trial, he would have to accept that hes hurting others when he dies. If he were to accept this, then we would have the Greed If story minus the contract. Greed Subaru was willing to kill himself just to let Petra know the weather and I think that if Subaru had passed the second trial, he would be just as desensitized

@@TheSixOfSwords They cut the second arc and made it go from arc 1.5 to arc 3 in 5 episodes (which means they skipped 50 chapters in the manga), now they're rushing to end the series in the 6 episodes they have left (5 actually, they said episode 6 is going to be a recap) So, if you want spoilers : Emma accomplished nothing for 5 episodes in the anime because they cut out her character development arc, Ray also does not help that much because they also cut out his character development arc. The children just spend most of the time trying to get food and fish (that's not even a joke, they had 2 scenes of children grabbing fish in two episodes straight) and still couldn't even feed themselves that well, now Norman's back at the end of ep. 5 to save them from their incompetent selves because Norman ex-machina. And this bs comes out every week right after rezero... I just want to forget it ever existed. Rezero is great, rezero is my life. I have faith in rezero, we don't deserve white fox. Just forget TPN has a season 2...

@Santiago Sosa An Echidna that fully embodied her factor of greed would probably give gluttony a run for her money as she is she is one of the most mild mannered of the witches though by no means one of the best intentioned. She certainly does have emotions as shown from her interactions with envy and emilia however she does seem to view them with an outsiders perspective probably thinking that undue influence could skew test results, also like all the witches she places a heavy over emphasis on the objective value of her domain (eg. personal interest) she doesn’t seem to have as much tunnel vision on the matter however as some of the other witches otherwise she likely would have started with her monologue rather than ending with it. There is no need to take what saburu thinks as gospel has has been made explicit time and again he is flawed and we are given more than enough information to come to our own conclusions, (on that note Betty and Ram are both far better a judging a situation on first contact and it’s only the opportunity of trial and error that give subaru the upper hand, by the same token they also seem to often have a better grasp on matters when all is said and done).

Considering she has an earth myth associated name that is also an earth celestial body, names things after Earth Stars like only Flugel and Subaru have been known to, looks like a strange combination of Subaru and Satella, and is literally the only female in the series who Subaru’s initial reaction to is “Shes too sacred to even think about touching in that way”, she’s either Flugel’s surrogate daughter, or his and Satella’s ACTUAL daughter. And considering I suspect that Subaru is actually a Flugel/Subaru going by a “cool” alias, that’s lost his memories and had to “Start over from Zero in this new world” that might mean that her goal is simply: “Give me my Mother and Father back.”

Not a light novel reader, but to me it's so obvious who Emilia's mother is. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * It's Minerva. Emilia takes her colours and elf traits after her father but her eyes' shape and sweet features after her mother. They even have similar robes. Also, Minerva's personality reminds me of Emilia.

I remember someone saying "Why doesn't Pandora use her authority to make herself immune to all attacks instead of reviving after being killed" Maybe a condition to the authority is that she can warp reality after something happend, like being killed, or Regulus disarming Geuse. An action has to be done before she can use her authority, well that is what i thought, who knows really except the author.

[Anime-only theory] I think what might happen is Emilia will see several futures, the vast majority of them bleak.... because after all, Subaru will use his Return by Death to give Emilia as many futures as he needs to secure just one happy future for her. She won't necessarily know Subaru's the one responsible for her having multiple futures, though; but she may nonetheless find relief in that "someone with that power" apparently won't settle for a bleak future for her, and thus be able to pass the 3rd trial on that line of thinking. The story does, after all, outright require Emilia to pass all 3 trials at this point.

I'm thinking since her authority is Vanity that she's able to change everything about herself/her own actions. *She* brought Regulus to the forest but changed it so *she* didn't. *She* died but changed it so *she* didn't. *She* made *herself* look like Emilia when fortuna slapped her. *She* removed *herself* from Emilia's memories She seems to be able to change/alter everything that's regarding *herself* both in past and present but can't change events *she* isn't a part of like Emilia's promise to Fortuna.

Theory on Pandora's Authority (or it's limitations): She can alter most aspects of reality but only if the world (or those around her. The extent of this requirement is unknown) at large is unaware of what the true nature of her ability is. Once enough (or just one. Again unclear as of yet) people know the truth she can't change things in their presence. Maybe it only takes one person and they'd have to be nearby. Anyways it could be why she goes out of her way to erase people's memories. In the books she's referred to as the Witch of Vainglory. (though it seems anime translations decided to use Vanity instead?) Anyways I think that's based on a sin where you care about what others think about you. Thus she can alter reality to make others believe what she wants them to believe. This manifests as her rewriting reality. But if they refuse to accept the changes she does due to knowing the true nature of her ability she can't deceive them and thus her authority won't work. The way she speaks in response to others seeing her powers in action (stuff like "your eyes deceived you" or "you mistook what you saw") is how she tries to keep them in the dark. This is why she goes to great lengths to make sure no one has memories of her (at least those she's not 100% sure is on her side). Likely it only takes one person to know the truth and that one person would have the ability to kill her. (perhaps the final boss fight for Subaru will be him finally realizing the truth about her authority and at the climax of this, he is able to kill her after this?)

Pandora is super scary man. Idk how you can be so scared of a girl who looks like she's 12, but nonetheless we are. It was very badass seeing Emilia snap and shout "DIE. DIE. DIE. DIE". It hit really hard seeing Guese break, and hearing that laugh gave me goosebumps [or Guesebumps ;) ]. Finally I loved when Roswaal acknowledged Otto. I find it incredible that a Merchant who's main ability is to talk to animals played such an integral role to the story. They literally admitted that without Otto, Subaru would've lost- because Otto was "Seen as insignificant" (even by Roswaal's book)- which meant that he wasn't a factor that was accounted for. Otto literally saved everyone 🤣 Best Boi Otto has finally convinced everyone that he is best waifu.
