From the way it sounds, I look at is as an exciter, a saturation, a polish, not as a resort for fixing problems in a mix, but more so enhancing one from a mastering perspective.

The more people use this plug-in, the better it is for recording artists that don't want to sound like everyone else. We already see this happening with the sound of "modern vocals" where everyone uses the same plugins for pitch correction and harmony generation. I hate to say this, but what was once known as the science of recording engineering has become even more formulated in its application than the ear candy that has been produced by the record industry itself. The name of the plug-in isn't even ironic - it's iconic of the age in which we live.

The point at 13:30 is exactly what I thought and why I didn't wanted to use plugins like this when I started : A good/excellent engineer can make everything sound as he wants with what he have at his disposable. Depending of such tools that don't show you what you are doing. Will make you struggle a lot if you face any scenarios where you won't have that tool with you (which is very likely to happen).

best way of looking at this plugin is a multiband parallel processor. Basically combining all the parallel processing (compression, saturation, eq, etc.) you might do to a mix, and making this available for different bands. Maybe the manufacturer could've done a better job explaining this plugin, but I understand this was intended for use toward the end of your mix process or at the beginning of your mastering stage. If you've ever did rear bus parallel compression on a mix, you can hear this plugin doing similar things - but has the flexibility to do it for a particular band. This plugin might not be for everybody, but it definitely has a purpose.

I don’t know why the trend now is creating plugins do hidden processes under the hood, this really creates lazy unskillful audio engineers ( it won’t create any audio engineers basically ). Put saturator, MB compressor and eq all together in one process without letting the user understanding what’s happening and then call it the ultimate plugin. No one cares about the art but the money.
@Weston_Guidero

Because it makes it simpler for people who don't understand what's under the hood or even for the people that actually understand what's under the hood. Some plugins are kind of made to make things easier. I think everyone should understand them and why they don't necessarily need these types of plugins, but sometimes can help them or their workflow. Really all you need is the basic tools that are pretty much included in every DAW...

EXACTLY! Minimal plugins are the worst! Plus what if you don't want to use them in the same way other people might want to. Developers need to stop trying to make plugins for lazy producers and need to add more customization! If you feel like being lazy or getting to a certain point quickly that's why making your own presets for your plugins helps... and why can't the developer just have full control over features and include stock presets for people who aren't engineers, and that way they CAN observe and see what's happening, and then actually learn. If I see a plugin that has an over-simplified interface 9/10 times I immediately skip over it.

Technology doesn't always advance art...but it does allow incompetent, inexperienced and untalented people to do it. Music 'technology' started losing 'art' when digital reverbs/effects took over in the 80's. The current digital tools have removed any requirement for musical or technical ability to make 'music', or the need to work & learn under a master for years so you have some clue what you are doing, and why. The state of the industry today is a simple 'reflection' of this.

Plugin producers are all on this "one for all"- train recently. That doesn´t have to be a bad thing.... well a side by side comparison between at least some of this "one for all" pluggies would be nice! But you are right: to give all your trust and confidence to one of this "one for all" things right from the beginning, will possibly stand in the way of learning mixing in it´s debth and "realness", as you don´t know exactly what you´re doing.... It´s a double-edged sword. I do believe to some extend that you can save some time when you´re really confident with this pluggie because you use it very often and know what to expect when dialing around with it. On the other side you can not finetune certain frequencies for example. When you have to do this anyways, you loose time.

I wouldn't worry about new engineers using this, to be honest. Because sugar gives you a broad control over multiple plugins and sooner or later, if they're truly serious about their work, they would want greater control over their mixes. Sugar would be good if it was marketed for beginners and hobbyists like me who just want to get a song out there. But I can also see it being used by professionals when time is a limiting factor.

Before you even pressed play it should be painfully obvious, that the heart of this is simply a multiband compressor. For most people using presets and just moving knobs until they get the sound they are looking for it's a good thing. Pro users already have full featured multiband compression but you have a better understanding of what you are doing to get good results. These types of plugins are great for most home users. I would say for lots of home engineer/producers give it a try.

A plug-in that separates a track in to 6 bands and allows you to put 2 plugins on each band pre fader and 2 plugins post fader. The are also other options on each band width. Could be a great fintuning tool for pretty any application. Mastering of course... but also imagine being able to put effects on a vocal but only a certain frequency. Please, I can not test things right now and mainly I want to know if the plugin has a good sound quality.

What i would like is a plug similar to this, where there is a shortcut to commonplace mastering stuffs, but after you have dragged your soundgoodifier to the good point, you should be able to expand the plug-in and see all the individual parameters it has changed as well as fine tune every single one of them on their own. That way you save lots of time without loosing any detail. Edit: That being said, I'm a composer and a musician first, so I'm not (yet at least) very knowledgable when it comes to mixing and mastering.

Arvid Olson, get into it! For what it is worth, you just described most of FabFilters plugins. They let you see your sound and your changes in real time, and you can fine tune whenever needed... but those options aren’t filling your screen when you don’t. If you learn with plugins that feed your creative side rather than your science mind, a musician/composer can quickly make a brilliant amateur sound engineer.

I suspect that if you look at what this plugin does, it's basically EQ with a bit of multiband compression. It isn't really made to actually do a good job of "mastering," it just makes changes to whatever signal is fed through it. If you actually look at it, the key principal is "Change for change's sake!" Not better, just different!

Actually, I think many here are missing the point. Personally, I prefer continuing to improve my engineering and mastering skills using the tools that come with just about any Daw. Though, I do Have An Array Of 3rd party plugins and software. But, What does it matter if I can achieve the same if not better results using the type of plugins as mentioned in this review? Does that make me not have talent? Any reasonably intelligent person can learn the proper ins and outs of plugins, eq's, compressors, delay, reverb, etc, However If I can achieve the same results in a fraction of time using these types of software plugins, no one would question whether I had any talent or not, because the bottom line is if the music I produce is on par if not better than any other top 20, 50 or 100 songs being played on the radio, what difference does it make? True Talent does not come from spending hours tweaking, compressing, eqing, applying effects, etc, as anyone can learn the techniques to make quality mixes. True Talent, Is A Special gift that comes from using your Ears! If the final product sounds good then It is Good! Period. It does not matter what route I took to achieve a quality Product.

At 64 years of age I'm not going to improve that much, though miracles may happen! I'm guessing it's got a limiter, multiband compression and EQ going at once. Using 3 effects on a dry signal can very easily trick the ear into thinning something is magical. As a time saver it might work great, but as adding something that other plugins can't give you it's snake oil.

To the folks here saying "This is BS. You should learn how to do what it does the old school way, with saturation, compression, eq, etc bla bla bla" Tell you what - next time you want to record a track, spend 20 years learning to play the drums in a world class way beforehand, because sequencing drums or using loops or samples is "cheating". Further - never in my long career of working with the best artists, engineers and producers in the business have I seen anyone criticize or refuse to use a practical tool. In fact, wise use of those tools are often what make them productive and successful. Process audio is not suggesting this is the only way to accomplish these sounds. It's another tool for the toolbox, and a time saver in certain circumstances. Finally, the supposition that tools like this make their user's music all sound the same is like saying everyone's music sounds like Prince's because they use the same drum machine, kind of bass, guitars, etc. - preposterous. People with limited creativity and imagination will make boring, samey music. The real problem is folks with limited musical culture, taste or skill (DJs, so-called EDM artists, and college-jazz Nazis for a start) who become "producers", track-makers, songwriters, or worse - label executives. They are the source of shitty, samey music, not the good musician, producer or even mixer who uses something like Sugar to enhance a track now and again, when it's THE RIGHT TOOL FOR THE JOB.

A quick take.. which may not be correct... It's something like a multiband EQ , running in parallel settings for each band with a compression setting which is not really user controlled (which I think it's a big NO)... Hmmm TDR NOVA and TDR SLICK EQ free do this for 0$... So there.... Big waste got the amount asked... Ozone or Saturn do this much better with much more user controlled settings.... Thank you again for your time and effort

I guess another thing is that you have to question. Is the plugin meant for acoustic music, EDM or more inbetween like hip-hop. Since using huge amounts compression would be often done in EDM which would make this tool more fitting there as it uses a lot of compression and saturation techniques.

I would guess, this thing is more something for beginners or musicans, just putting together a track. But as he said, the learning curve from switching from this thing to the real deal could by quite steep.

Basically, lo Air/Rbass, some saturation of specific bands, EQ and compression. Alright why not?

does anyone have any comprehensive look through's in what sugar is doing in the low end ? It seems that there is multiband compression going on and its almost visualized as well. How is sugar treating the low end when its being enhanced and how can the dynamic process alone be replicated ?

this type of plugin is pretty usefull for ppl like me who are recording on type beats most of the time and can't afford ppp productions. You can basically adjust to your need the .wav that is otherwise hard to alter properly without multiple plugin use. Or at least from this vidéo it seems like it

I like the GUI. Then again GUIs don't make sound. :) A 4-band multiband compressor like Fabfilter MB, plus Fabfilter Q2, and Fabfilter Saturn for saturation, could do the absolutely same trick, probably better sounding. I'm just giving examples, not a hard-core Fabfilter fan, or a fan of multiband compressors especially. I'm a fan of making a great sounding mix first. ;)

It looks to me like a plugin not for audio pros. It´s good for whoever wants things fixed quick and easy with out understanding or wishing to understand why and how things are happening. Which probably is the widest clientele you have now.

It seems like an in-depth exciter, that actually works well and sounds good. which i s a pretty rare thing for something called an exciter. which is probably why they don't call it an exciter. hehe. but that makes sense with its basic eq groups, a bit of compression, and nice saturation.
