Those guys fretting about all the money ruining the game back then needn't have worried. In ten years time, the Premiership would come along and transform the game into the ethical, honorable, moral, respectable and affordable game for the working classes that we all love today.
@bjorklaser9 жыл бұрын
+danieljamesmead the premier league has allowed clubs such stoke and crystal palace (with all due respect) to sign quality players, who in 1984 would've been playing in their own national leagues.

Bjork Laser You're right. Every time I pay £60 to sit down in silence in a sterile Premier league ground, nowhere near my mates, surrounded by people taking selfies and discussing their dream teams and heat maps, I console myself with the fact that Stoke have bought some Slovakian I've never heard of who makes more money in a month than I will in 20 years.

danieljamesmead Des Robinson I understand where your coming from but at the end of the day it's 'supply and demand' mate. They set the prices because we're ready to pay for it. We're the reason that those players earn more in a week than we do in a year.

Björk you inferring the league is more egalitarian now? Stoke were in the 1st div till relegated c85 palace started 80s being touted as the team of the 80s. Back then Nottingham forest won 2 European cups off a league title win, villa won league 81 I think European cup in 82 and the scousers won leagues n cups. Look at their opposition in those comps - wasn't dominated just by the big names then. Ipswich almost won a league early 80s Everton and Arsenal won twice each in 80s we thought we had a problem then with the big 5 - I'm Man United but we hate the way football has gone - 2 or 3 home games a season worth going to. Even always are losing the lads now so the league cup away ties is one everyone tries to get to now. No swearing, no smoking fags let alone twisting one, couples, families everywhere (remember when the family stand was where dads n kids went? Where my old man took me loads) it's ruined the game. All these soulless grounds and all the lads who used to go have dropped out. There used to be 20 of us aged 14 onwards who went to United who'd meet at the station, was down to 5 by 17 (1992) dropped in with some other lads remember us taking 2 coaches 93 charity shield out of that hundred a good 30-35 packed in going by 1996. In 1993 we thought the atmosphere had gone at OT - it was positively wild compared with OT c2000. We are talking here about match day culture - the thing we all fell in love with - the match is a small part of a very long day out - Björn you talk about the benefits of premier league almost in economic terms - it's ridiculous - you can debate marketing as much as midfielders now. Not the game we fell in love with? Supply and demand? That wasn't how it worked when united were crap! It was loyalty and passion etc. when we go crap again we will leverage market forces in our favour lol. The sad fact is football used to be a place where working class lads grew up & congregated & enough got the bug to be going years later. That isn't supply & demand it's a shared passion and culture. Sad fact is grounds are full of middle aged folk now (Average age at OT must have doubled since early mid 80s) and whoppers who won't go through thick n thin. We haven't got Enough local kids in our support now & there no where they can congregate n build their own thing anymore. Future fan wise is grim. Spurs away was always lively - long walk to and from ground. Nasty poisonous atmosphere - we loved it - along with Goodison only 2 really good grounds left for 80s style atmosphere.
