It's extremely complicated but here you go: Salford has a second team but it's the rugby league team. The original Red Devils. Their crowds can be fairly low if United are on. Salford City were for your non league fans who are a different breed. The ground isn't in the middle of Salford, it's on the edge . Every town has a team in Greater Manchester. Fans of Bury just come from Bury, etc. Salford is a city in its own right and was before Manchester. You'll get growled at by the locals if you ever say they're in Manchester. However Salford doesn't have a city centre. Town is Manchester, the bus routes etc all go in that direction. The boundary of Salford changed in 1974, you have 'proper' Salford as it's referred to. Where Salford town hall is, isn't in proper Salford. They used to have an S instead of an M for the post code. You have lots of little towns that were deemed in Manchester, now in Salford. It's like in London you have Croydon, Wimbledon that have been swallowed up by London. Going back to the bus routes Salford is in like 4 areas and you can't get from one to the other. For me to get to Salford City's ground I'd need to go into Manchester, get a bus going towards Bury, get off in Prestwich (which is Bury council) and walk back into Salford. The part of Salford the ground is in is really isolated. So the catchment area for Salford City is extremely small. I don't buy into any of this TV Wrexham stuff. There's also no parking near the ground. Neville was looking at moving the club to where the rugby team play. The problem being that it could only have two tenants and Sale (who play the posh version of rugby - rugger buggers) are also there. Salford rugby who the ground was built for (but the council own it) are the poorest out of the 3. This was then looking like the rugby team was gonna swap grounds with the football team. As you can imagine this went down like a cup of cold sick. So there was perhaps a little less warmth towards the football team which probably impacted on crowds. The FC United argument is of course incredibly complex as well. The majority of United fans from Salford despise FC Utd. There was a lot of ill feeling when it was formed and was seen as disloyal. The second season for FC saw them play Salford City twice, once in the cup. As a United fan it was horrible to see reds pitted against each other. Glazer rent boys and Judas scum were sung. The game stopped at one point when some 'Salford" fans went on the pitch with a judas scum banner. The game was a played at the old rugby ground , the atmosphere was very tense and unsurprisingly resulted in violence. So bizarrely they may both be little Uniteds but you'd be one or the other if you had a second local team. However most don't. I don't see anything wrong with a second team if it's non league. Any other type like Celtic and Liverpool, United etc is just a massive no. So I suppose that's what Salford City are, peoples second non league team that aren't non league any more. As it happens I'm moving next month to Prestwich. I was a season ticket holder at United for nearly 30 years but can't manage it being disabled now. I watched a handful of Salford games years ago. I might go because I miss football, but I'll always be United, whose second team is Salford Rugby League. You've done American Football, you should do a Rugby League video. Leeds would be a good one to do.

Uncultured American here, but the point you brought up a little past the 4 minute mark is really interesting to me, because here in the States and Canada, we also have a very grim outlook on sports ownership in what we call the "Big 4" leagues here, but it's so crazy to me that our sports leagues do not even have a fraction of the amount of turnover that something like Premiere soccer gets, almost solely because of how differently the league is structured. North American sports leagues don't do relegation and promotion (mostly for geographic reasons), as such, it's not really possible for some jagoff with too much money for his own good to just nonchalantly "buy" a team for PR and run it into the ground, because in the North American scope, you either have to buy a major league franchise, or buy a minor league franchise FROM a major league one- which in comparison to soccer's "minor leagues" (I'm not sure what they're called compared to the premiere leagues), are more expensive and a much bigger commitment. For instance, if you own an AHL club, and you put a moron in charge of player acquisition, and then a bigger moron in charge of coaching and development, that mismanagement is going to tank the NHL club because you're essentially "poisoning the farm". It's just interesting to me that, over there, it's an issue that happens routinely and continue to happen routinely to small clubs, where over here, minor league markets not only stand on their own in some cases, but have a solid degree of protection if they're affiliated to a straightedge organization. A place like Des Moines or Wilkes-Barre doesn't *necessarily* need to stand on its own as a market, because they have security in being linked to the Wild and Penguins. Where because they don't use an affiliate system, but instead, a relegation system out in the UK, smaller markets are much more autonomous, but at massive cost to their stability and long term security. It's strange to me that one side of the pond is experiencing that as a routine issue in their leagues, where in North America, when you have an owner like David Tepper, Bob Nutting, Jerry Reinsdorf or Alex Meruelo, it's a HUGE deal and other owners even actively work against them.

It is not London, only so many people there and with 2 huge powers the fan need is not there. i am sure they will just do what they do. they are also a middling league 2 team who are either middle or just trying to hang in. if they get to a point they start pushing for promotion fan excitement may pick up in the area for them

Before the takeover they were on a level with Cheadle Town & Woodley Sports. Ninety per cent of their home crowd turned up post take over, which is pretty good finding 1000 people willing to pay to watch a club they'd ignored before. They'll survive because it's easy to recruit players around here.

In all fairness, Salford were the sort of Man City of non league. They used to get like 50 to a game before they got taken over and now only 10 years later they get over 3k so most of them cant be life long die hard fans

Ten years ago, Peter Lim bought Valencia CF in Spain. Back then, it used to be always in he Champions League. Now, it sits at the bottom of the standings, aiming to avoid relegation to the second division.

Only been to Salford once, in the Away End with Orient first game of the 2021/2 season, therefore first League game with fans in the ground post Covid. Our end was sold out, Home sections not much more than half full after a year and a half without being able to go. To be fair to those who were there, they did support their team quite well. Being where they are, as you point out in the video, they'll always struggle to build a big fan base.

Good to see them paying homage to Salford lads like John Cooper Clark (spoken word poem) and Ewan McColl who wrote Dirty Old Town about the place. You might be familiar with his daughter, Kirsty, a great singer and writer tragically taken too soon.

As a Salfordian, been to Salford City FC a few times where its had a decent attendance, like you witnessed it's extremely hard to get to and nothing around the peninsula stadium and if United or City are on it can be dire, the only two real teams cared about in the City is Salford Red Devils (The Original Red Devils, Rugby League, one of the oldest sporting institutions in the city, top flight of Rugby League and came 4th this season) and Manchester United for football, I know more people starting to attend Salford City FC but its more if United, City or Salford Red Devils are not playing, they need to be more central for the club to grow (which is why they tried swapping to the Salford Community Stadium with the Salford Red Devils, which didnt go down well). The issue Salford FC face is that if the Class of 92 pull out and with the council now focusing on a Rugby strategy for the city (Since Rugby League is what the city is known for) I dont see FC growing.

I lived in Manchester for a few years, went to many teams in the surroundings areas (Wigan, Salford, Altrincham, Stockport), and none of them have any form of fan base, they all support teams from the city

It seems as though Salford is the second team for the majority of their fans, kind of explains the apathy towards them. Doesn't help that their owners also care more about another club down the road. Do think the £20 a ticket maybe a bit steep too.

Fair play to the Class of 92 in one respect, in that Salford already had a large modern stadium, the AJ Bell, and lesser owners would have been selling the ground for a quick profit and paying rent there.

Salford residents have always supported Man Utd (Old Trafford is closer to Salford than to the city of Manchester!) so Salford City is bound to struggle for fans. Plus... Salford, as a city, is mainly represented by their Rugby League team. I used to watch them on the odd occasion in their tangerine days - but as a City fan I won't go near them now!

Anyone trying to rehabilitate the existence of clubs like this should remember the other clubs they exclude by their existence. Go and watch the class of 92 documentary again. You can see Salford competing with and eventually eclipsing fan-owned Darlington, a proper former football league club with actual fans rather than day trippers. These artificial clubs are a plague on our football pyramid. They are the temporary playthings of bored rich people, while real football clubs, like Darlington (or a list of other former league clubs with actual fans who have fallen on hard times) are excluded.

Been to watch salford city a few times through uni and the Saturday games are horrific especially when United are on. Midweek matches are a little better but I was able to buy tickets the day before with some of my mates getting tickets on the day for their promotion semi final against Stockport. That being said I think it’ll be a club that will grow through generations, the amount of kids that go is promising and they seem to have a bigger attachment than the adults.

It is a shame, the class of 92 have put Salford on the map, they have invested in to the club to improve the ground which is a good thing. Ok they haven't pumped millions into the team they are playing at that level. What do people want, millions and millions investment?

salford who used to be orange changed their colours, like crystal palace and luton, they changed their identity. luton had derby county colours and palace had claret and blue stripes with the blue being dominant

The Class of 92 bought Salford City by mistake. I had tweeted a few of them to ask them to buy Salford City Reds rugby league team, that had just gone into administration. A couple of months later it was announced they'd bought Salford City instead.

There is a major difference betweem Wrexham and Salford City, given that their recent histories have been similar. Wrexham has/had a large passionate fanbase in times past, which has never quite petered out. And they have returned and growing. Having very high profile, rich owners helps. That is, higher profile and richer than the owners at Salford City.

I used to sometimes go down pre takeover. Midweek games you'd have about 50 people there. They took over and changed the colour, badge, name of the ground etc and brought with them a load of United fans. As a blue it was an instant turn off. Most people are red or blue and it will take years of kids growing up with it to build proper support.

Even though Salford are a bit soulless, I still think every city, town, village, hamlet etc. should have a local team to support. Football dies when it stops being local. Even on the micro scale with weekend football representing specific areas/neighbourhoods and housing estates, it's great to see. The fact that the option is *there* to choose to support a local club that represents the place *you* live in is remarkable, especially when in other countries you don't get that level of infrastructural depth with the number of teams in the pyramid. Nigeria has 200 million people but barely any clubs to support. Sporting Lagos is in a mega-city but barely any crowds. Might not even be a team in the province you're in. Or in the US where entire states don't have a team in neither the MLS or USL. Americans are stuck supporting NFL/NHL/NBA/MLB teams nowhere near where they live because of this franchise model. Whereas in the UK, you can pop down the local and watch a team play no matter where you are in the country. If everyone supported a Big 6 club it would be boring af.
