Awesome DIY Coffee Cup Nook

she asked me to make her a "shelf-like thing" to hang above the coffee bar. She wanted something she could put her large coffee mugs on. So I went to work designing it and I show you that process in the video. I chose pecky cypress for the material since I have so much of it. She likes the look of the cypress unless it has deep pecky parts. This meant that I had to fill all of these.
The first step was to mill up the stock based on the design. The cypress came out of a den and I really liked the multi-colored look of how different stains were applied. So I decided to try my hand at doing something similar. Once I got the stock milled up and all the joinery cut, I used dyes to color the wood filler for the pecky areas. Then I used more dyes to randomly color the pieces. I sanded it back a bit and decided I needed to tone the colors down just a little, so I went over the pieces with Colonial Maple stain.
Once I was happy with how everything looked, it was time to assemble. I did a fair amount of dry fitting throughout the process to ensure everything fit as it should. Then it was time to glue everything up and apply the finish. I decided to use oil-based polyurethane and I'm happy with how it turned out.
So now she has yet another handcrafted piece made by yours truly. And she loves them all. She couldn't wait to get her cups in it. This project took over a month and a half, but it was worth it! It may not be a masterpiece, but it is a one-of-a-kind heirloom piece. Every piece of furniture I've built over the years is still in use. Either by us, or one of our kids. That makes me happy.
