Alright! So there seems to be something special about that ye old 14mm 2.5, which i keep hearing about again and again, here and there (besides the usual mentions). Will get it then! Wouldn't necessarily need the focal length (have 12-35mm 2.8, 20mm 1.7 II and the many kit zooms that overlap), but i do covet the SIZE, and since i'm much more into smaller and smaller bodies nowadays (GM1/GM5 especially), it only makes the perfect sense. M4/3 at their finest with small, light-weight, quality lenses. It's quite a special luxury in it's own right. Thanks for this quality video, you stand-out from the sea of mediocrity with great stuff! Have a good day now!

If you can afford it the 15mm f1.7 is one of the sharpest lenses for MFT and is faster than the 14mm while only being slightly bigger. There are dji versions of it too that are optically identical but you can pick up cheaper than the Leica branded ones.
@villemononen53037 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion Joseph! Looks like a fine lens indeed. I like the colors through it, it's beautiful simplistic in design plus the aperture ring. I appreciate the praised sharpness, but for me, it's not the be-all-end-all anymore. Even most quality vintage primes are certainly sharp enough (but rarely wide open of course), but with the vintage look that i often seem to prefer over the "digital". That said, quality vintage wide-angles are few and far between (often not that impressive on m4/3), so it's a bit of a different ball park. I wanted to mention that only to say, that sharpness isn't all that important anymore. Well, there's good use in both worlds, both appreciated. Manual delight when there's time and space to slow down (which i prefer), AF for faster moments / added convenience (and possible frustration with contrast AF) 15mm 1.7 is small, but not small enough for my wants. It's seems it's the difference between a small normal lens and pancake i'm interested here. Plus the price difference, i'm sure i can find the 14mm for very pleasing price in good time. It's a matter of time, patience, and some keen eye. And i'll be using it for video, so it's all good. Cheap, quality pancake that performs well, it's there with me wherever i "throw" it? Sounds excellent to me. I would jump on the Leica with no hesitation if it would have image stabilization and weather-sealing, but as it stands now, i'm not jumping on it per say :) But maybe the right moment comes around in the future, if i'm that invested. Thanks for the heads up, have a fantastic day now!

Own it myself and love it. Haven´t changed lenses since i own it xD. Only downside, not weather sealed & stabilization...that´s why iam thinkin of trading it. So scared getting this beauty messed up when i go outdoors.. Thought about gettin the 12-35 f2.8 instead, i know it´s 2.8 vs. 1.7 but, weather sealing and IS comes with it. I do own a 12-60 f 3.5-5.6 which is sealed as well.. Does it make sense to upgrade to the 12-35 and therefore give the two others away? Any thoughts/comparisons?

When I was looking at wide angle, I ended up splurging on the Olympus 12mm f2.0 over the Panasonic 14mm f2.5. In retrospect, I should have saved a few bucks (like 700 bucks actually) and gone with the 14mm. The form factor is better and it would have allowed me to pocket it whole the 20mm f1.7 was mounted. That said, the 12mm is super duper sharp and from what I recall the 14mm wasn't in the same league. Decisions decisions... This is such a first world problem...

Have the original versions of the 14 and 20, great lenses especially on a small body like the GM5 I have. Especially love the 20’s rendering. As a side note, if you can find them (I imported from Japan), there’s an adapter lens kit for the 14, which has a 0.79 TC (meaning approx 22mm equiv), a “macro” close up lens and a fisheye lens. They work on the 14 and one of the kit lenses. Makes a nice small kit and if you don’t intend to use fisheye/close up much, it’s cheap. The 0.79 is great for Astro or just in tight spaces

Maybe in the US you guys don't hear a lot about Olympus, but they have some pretty great lenses too. the 17mm 1.8 certainly is certainly as good as the 2 first lenses you mention, they have plenty of great lenses, if you can afford it, their 7-14mm 2.8 and 12-100 4.0 are really nice lenses to work with, and this last one is maybe one of the most flexible one you'll ever own.
@shiznuts7 жыл бұрын
The 17mm f/1.8 additionally is nice because it has the manual focus de-clutch like the PRO ones. Focus-by-wire is such a drag and Olympus has found the solution, without having to go fully manual all the time. Unfortunately no such implentation on the absolutely gorgeous 75mm f/1.8. The 60mm f/2.8 Macro is one of the better macro solutions out there, it really is. The f/2.8 zooms are incredible, with the 7-14mm, 12-40mm and 40-150mm f/2.8 PRO lenses (and 1.4x TC) you can go from 7-210mm, 14-420mm 35mm equiv. with just 3 lenses (albeit pricey ones). You could argue that they have a tame, precise and a bit cold character to them, but you can't argue that they're just quality lenses. The 12-100 f/4 IS is a gem too, played around with that and an E-M1 Mark II at a Photokina afterparty sorta event last year. Though, f/4 definitely doesn't rock my boat personally. Great for daytime event type of shooting however. These Panasonic lenses mentioned in the video are fairly budget. The f/1.7 range is really good value. Of course that 20mm pancake is super small and the 25mm super affordable, but nothing that blows me away. I'm rather pleased however with the Leica 15mm f/1.7, for a Leica it's actually not at all overpriced, it's superb value! Great looking lens. The 42.5mm f/1.7 is very nice value as well and was the first Lumix prime to get OIS. Then there's third party. Not that a big fan of the Rokinon/Samyang/Walimex lenses, they used to mean very soft wide open and just not holding up very well and being all manual of course... supposedly nowadays there are a couple that really nail it though, but I haven't delved into that too much. But Sigma is doing awesome. Back in the day they had the EX DN 19, 30 & 60mm f/2.8 primes (the first two initially with grippy ring, later like the 60mm all flush metal). Mechanically they weren't the greatest, optically however true contenders and they were extremely cheap! These days it's all about DC DN. The 30mm f/1.4 DC DN is out and it's something else! They should officially launch the 16mm f/1.4 any day now. The ART and Contemporary series by Sigma are just such great value and quality, it's hard to go wrong. Then there's a whole bunch of others. Like Voigtländer... their 17.5mm f/0.95 is amazeballs! SLR Magic e.g. has the HyperPrime CINE 25mm T0.95. Zhongyi/ZY Optics/Mitakon has a very compact and more affordable 25mm f/0.95. Laowa has the 7.5mm f/2 MFT. Veydra has a cinema primes line-up of T2.2's around the 1000 bucks mark a pop. C-mount, or C-mount derived lenses are becoming a thing. 7Artisans, Kamlan, Zonlai, Meike, Neewer, etc. A brilliant thing of these mirrorless cameras: sensor stabilization. Even with 3rd party or vintage lenses, you can get away with some handheld shooting! Whether you're adapting a whole set of Contax Zeiss primes through a simple C/Y to EOS adapter and EOS to M4/3 Speedbooster or Lens Turbo (or the same that goes for Leica Summicron-R (E55)), going with the (Jason) 'Bourne lenses' (Nikon AF(-S) Nikkor ED 28-70mm f/2.8 D & 80-200mm f/2.8 D (throw in the 17-35mm f/2.8 D for good measurement) or the stills versions of the expensive Tokina Cinema AT-X range: AT-X PRO DX 11-16mm f/2.8 II, AT-X PRO FX 16-28mm f/2.8 & AT-X 535 PRO DX 50-135mm f/2.8 or legendary Angenieux design AT-X PRO II 28-70mm f/2.6-2.8. Or anything else vintage with M42 (Russians! Like the Helios 44-2 58mm f/2), FD, AI(-s), PK, MD, etc mount... you just have endless possibilities and joy!

@villemononen53036 жыл бұрын
I've just got the 14mm 2.5 (v1) and sold couple 14-42mm (v1) in the past, so i don't have them to compare right now. The main reasons for selling the zooms was that i started to prefer primes / film lenses, optics were certainly "good enough" (but wanted something better), and 12-35mm 2.8 just rocks so much that there wasn't the need anymore. 12-35mm is costly though, and that's always a consideration. Primes such as 20mm 1.7 are optically great, small and that's what i prefer nowadays. Without direct comparison, i'd say optically the 14mm and 14-42mm are roughly the same for stills. "Good enough", but not great like 20mm 1.7, or 45mm 1.8 etc. etc. Is the speed jump from f3.5 to f2.5 big enough, i wonder... Maybe. But the jump from f3.5 to ~f1.7 territory is SIGNIFICANT, that's for sure! However, the 14mm 2.5 is really nice in many other regards. It's so SO tiny (even 20mm now looks huge), so light-weight but has a good feel to it. It seems like it's well-built, well thought-out. Simple and good. Very quiet, and the AF works nicely in video too. It has many good things going for it, and i think this will be a keeper. I will work around it's "good enough" optics to shooting styles that make it shine (maybe close-ups and BW for starters), and for video it's really great. That's where it think this lens really shines, shooting video. But it's good in general use aswell. So lovely on smaller bodies too, like the GM1 / GM5 etc. But when comparing to 14-42mm, how was it again? Prices for both are roughly similar (though the zoom is cheaper), both AF well and are relatively quiet. The zoom has Stabilization (which is certainly nice and a plus), but doesn't matter all that much at the wider 14mm end... In the end, i think it boils down to if you can appreciate the smaller (tiny!) form factor of 14mm 2.5 as a benefit, and the slightly faster speed as some possible bonus. Otherwise, i'm pretty sure you can expect the same quality and fov from both, the zoom might still serve you well. 14mm is still 14mm. Jumping to 12mm (or even wider) would be WAY noticeable in my opinion. Do you prefer shooting wide, and if so, how wide? Something to consider.

I live in Finland, so the climate for available items / prices is something else. Availability is typically more scarce, and whatever that brings about. Here the best place to sell is www.tori.fi. Perhaps the US equivalent would be Craigslist, assuming it's still relevant? I usually spend good time in producing stand-out pictures of the items i sell. Good lighting is the most important, maybe some soft gentle light like sometimes in the kitchen etc. Light diffuser / extra light helps at times. I also often spend good time in writing about them, in honest but uplifting manner. Others are the better judges. But it seems people respond rather well most of the time. Euros should equal to dollars in these prices: 1. Early 2016 the prices were around 100€. 2. January 2017 one was sold for 85€. 3. June 2017 another was sold for 60€ (it had a small scratch of the front element, bundled with another Sigma lens). I'd say, fair price seems to be around 80-100€ still. It's a kit lens, thus very common. But not as common as the Olympus equivalent, and out of the two, the Panasonic lens is more sought-after (I.S. does it). For me, lenses are easy to sell (usually buy and sell vintage lenses). Especially now in this time of heightened interest. Selling camera bodies can take a longer while though. Usually i sell lenses during the same day, or within few days. Many people contact, and i contribute that to the care i put forth on the pictures / description. I enjoy the process, and try my best to strike a balance between an ok price and good presentation. Nowadays i can charge a bit extra for the effort put forth, they go all the same. Still, i don't want to rip anyone off, so the best is to keep it fair and nice. I'm just a hobbyist.

Nice informative Review, The 12 to 35mm 2.8 is my current work-horse for filming, Would it be worth while in me adding a 20mm 1.7 to my lens collection ? I can see theres a better f stop, but loss of image stabilisation and weather sealing.
@pavelperina76295 жыл бұрын
Quite late reply. I would not recommend 20mm 1.7 for filming at all. It's good for stills only. It focuses slowly, it retracts a bit during focusing and this has two huge cons: it's noisy and focus hunting is very visible (and audible). Loss of image stabilization is not a significant issue if you have image stabilization on sensor (G80/G85/G9/...). It might be ok in manual focus mode (fixed focus), but I'm not sure if it's suffiecient for you. For stills I'm choosing 20mm/f1.7 over 12-35/f2.8 mostly for "social events". It allows lower ISO or shorter times and less motion blur in low light situations and it has natural angle of view without zooming half way.

What would you recommend for filming paragliding from the air, ive got the g7 but need a lens that's stable, wide. I get really good footage with my go pro, but want the same field of view but with my g7, on a budget. If your unsure what kind of filming I do, to get an idea see my latest video and you'll know what I mean, which is from a gopro. Didnt get great footage at all from my standard 14-42 lense on my g7. Ps great video

Just wanted to add (correct me if I am wrong) that the 7.5mm will not distort when recording in 4k due to the cropping factor of the M43.
@NigelBarros6 жыл бұрын
harken it will still distort due to the characteristics of the lens itself
@adriandeveraaa6 жыл бұрын
True but the barrel distortion will is not as pronounced in 4k (it is still there though)

How does the Panasonic 14mm f2.5 compare to the kit lens at the same focal length? Is there significant difference in image quality that will make it worth spending extra $150.

Nice video. But one thing seems not right. Sigma 18-35mm with nikon mount doesn´t have a aperture ring. Aperture control is also electronic.
@NigelBarros7 жыл бұрын
Dicker Wikinger Nikon mount lenses can have the aperture controlled manually through adapters, there's a small lever on the back end of Nikon mount lenses that allows the aperture to be controlled manually.

Ahh I thought you mean the lens itself. but.. holy sh.. I bought the sigma for canon mount because i have lens turbo II from ef - mft but if i had known this earlier .. oh man :D At this moment I always shoot it wide open. I saving some money on the metabones. Could be lot easier.

do you have any tips for manual focus while shooting video? I noticed on the GH2, if you manual focus while recording video, it won't zoom in and there's no focus peaking on this camera. So it's difficult to tell whether I'm making the focus better or worse.

Nice Video! I Own a 12 - 35 2.8 myself and a 25mm 1.7 I think this combo does cover almost every situation. But i m looking for a more tele-like lense. Can u recomment one?
@villemononen53037 жыл бұрын
First you have to establish what's tele enough for you. Is the classic Olympus 45mm 1.8 "tele enough" for you? Cheap, SHARP, GREAT portrait lens and for general purpose, small, something magical about it. Odd in size. Classic for a reason. Something longer? Prime or zoom? If you want something considerably longer, old 135mm vintage primes are excellent, almost every one of them i try (and cheap). Love them, love them, love them! But stabilized body would be preferable, or good light conditions, good technique of course, tripod perhaps. Two of my older pictures with 135 mm lenses to get the feel. Zoom in if you dare: flic.kr/p/H2FYYb flic.kr/p/Jm3X7N Maybe you need to get some hands-on experience, go to a shop and try them out, what works for you. Or buy vintage lenses for cheap, adapt, maybe that helps to decide what range you prefer. Sell onward if they don't serve you. There you go. It's not much, but it's something :)
@JuliusPfeiffer7 жыл бұрын
Ville Mononen thanks a lot for this long reply! Gonna try out some vintage lenses i guess! :)
@villemononen53037 жыл бұрын
There's lots of goodies there, especially with primes. Just lately i've been thoroughly impressed with the plasticy nFD (new FD) lenses, everyone of the them far has been quite awesome (for vintage lenses), even wide open. Now i understand what the talk about Canon lens quality has been. nFD 50mm 1.4 / 35mm 2.8 / 80-210mm 4.0. If you get lucky, might get them for cheap. Plus a focal reducer and just wow. Pentax-M rocks aswell, one just HAS to experience the focus ring and general feel of these lovely Pentaxes. There's lot to love. There's just so many good primes, so see what comes in your way. Maybe even buy one generic vintage zoom (though they're often not that great on m4/3), for example Pentax-M 80-200mm 4.5, maybe for 20-30€ if you get lucky. Typically with vintage lenses you need to stop down 1 to 2 stops to get good results, but nFD lenses have been quite good even wide open which is a huge surprise. Might want to pay a little extra for a tripod mounted adapter, if you have a tripod. Vintage lenses are often more heavier. G.A.S. (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) might occur, so be aware :) There's balance to everything. Alright, good luck in finding your next interest. It's just a matter of time really.

Hi Nigel , great video. Just wondering which lens hood is that on the 20mm pancake ?
@villemononen53037 жыл бұрын
Looks like a simple step-up ring (46mm to 58mm), the same you can see on the 14mm 2.5. Not so much for shading purposes obviously (typical use for a lens hood), but i would guess to be used with filters (CPL etc.), and some added protection (plus bigger lens cap). 12-35mm 2.8 shares the same 58mm filter size, so he would use the same filter(s) in all of them. Another choice would be a generic vented hood, if you're into those kinds of things. - 46mm vented lens hood (black and silver) -> www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_sop=15&_nkw=46mm+vented+lens+hood&rt=nc&LH_BIN=1 - 43mm snap-on lens cap (inside vented hood) -> www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_sop=15&_nkw=43mm+snap-on+lens+hood&rt=nc&LH_BIN=1 You can get the 43mm snap-on lens cap cheaper too, but here i wanted to point to the desirable type. There's no bayonet options for 20mm. Alright, have a good day now and happy shooting!

I'm very new to buying my own camera equipment, so thank you very much for the helpful video! Are all of these lenses native MFT mounts or would you need to buy an adapter? I'm looking specifically at the Panasonic 20 or 25mm.
@villemononen53037 жыл бұрын
All lenses mentioned on the video (except Sigma 18-35mm 1.8) are native, aswell as the 20mm 1.7 and 25mm 1.7 you mentioned. Optimized for m4/3, often in size aswell. Lens + adapter would show up in noticeably bigger size / bulk (especially in comparison to these little tiny wonderful pancakes). Pros and cons to both, each their own use. Still, there are some adaptable mounts that can be somewhat smallish in size too. Like the C-mount (TV / Surveillance) for example, but rarely used to for "serious" work. Or Leica L39, Konica AR, Canon FD etc. etc. Konica has had some nice pancakes / small lenses back in day. Soviet / Leica / Leica-clone lenses for L39, like the Industar-61 for example (great for macro). Not pancake, but small nonetheless. Furthermore about adapting lenses -> kzbin.info/www/bejne/pWLdgIOZiK-rqac Well, welcome to the mirrorless community and happy shooting! You'll be capturing great shots in no time. Be well!

@ensanchefilms96126 жыл бұрын
I think the same. That’s why I sold the 12-35mm, and I’m a little sad... It is an awesome lens, awesome focal range, fantastic stabilization and quality. The thing is that I use the GH4 for video, and I’m getting manual primes (I have a 25 1.8 and 12 f2, and I plan to buy the Laowa 7.5 soon and maybe a 45mm or so later) because AF isn’t an option, and the manual focus by wire is a disaster working with follow focus systems. If you use cinema rigs, it’s alright with the lack of internal stabilization of these primes.
