You oversell this buffet, I am here now. Many items from the menu not available. Started the buffet at 12pm, apparently I would only say it's not even worth the time to come by and try even if you are nearby. Majority of the dishes 6/10. Lackluster. I wanna laugh when you mentioned u came down couple of times to try it out. I have to be brutally honest, your review of this place failed big time. Those that are here today having buffet right now, will totally agreed with me.

I hope you gave feedback to the management - It could be an off day. Buffet quality is notoriously hard to maintain. It was good in the four times that I went, but then again, it was only four times and the quality can change from day to day. Plus, it's only my personal judgement - you might have a different standard when it comes to nasi Padang. Feel free to use me as a guide if you wish but ultimately, it’s best to trust only your own tastebuds. As for the menu, there is no menu to speak of, so I’m not sure what you are referring to. There is a menu on the hotel website that shows you a small sample of the dishes they do but it is wildly outdated. However, if you’re referring to not being able to get the dishes I vlogged about, those are the dishes I encountered during those four visits but the dishes changed every time that I went. That is how it is with this buffet, they try to offer new dishes, except for a few mainstay dishes. So don’t go to the buffet expecting all the same dishes that I vlogged about. I’ll pin this comment so that other people will see the reality that this buffet might not appeal to everyone and to some who might chime in with their experiences with the buffet and for the management to see your review.

Missing dishes during lunch buffet: Beef Bakso, Mee Siam, Mee Soto, Ayam Panggang Hijau, Begedil, Nasi Kuning. The menu did stated that dishes are on a regular rotation basis, but do take note, at the same time. No replacement for the missing dishes too.

Don't keep editing your comment. Your original reply did not mention anything about any menu at all until I revealed the cafe does have menu. Don't get too defensive. Anyway we are all here for good food hunting. 👍🏻

Hi zambuk4832, I amended my original comment to mention the hotel website having a menu is because I now realise that that is what you are referring to - a website menu that is quite out of date. You claim that the buffet is incomplete because “many of the items are not available”. That comment is not exactly true because as I stated, the menu on the website is out of date. To further explain, I’ve encountered easily 1.5 to 2 times the number of dishes over the four days that I went. Again it just depends on the day that you go on. They won’t offer everything everyday. They will offer different dishes on different days with a few mainstays. My edit on the original reply is not out of defensiveness but is to take note of what you are unhappy about and to offer a possible explanation. To me, it’s just easier to read an explanation on one post than to go through a whole thread of replies. At least I think so 🤷‍♂️ have a good day bro. No hard feelings here 👌

I am sure the food is great and that you gave a fair review but for the hotel to call this 'Nasi Padang' is wrong unless the recipes are from Padang - the highlands of West Sumatra and from the Minangkabau people .Mee rebus and mee soto are not Minang, . It should be called Indonesian buffet.. There are many good authentic Nasi Padang places owned and cooked by the Minangkabau community in Singapore. Big difference. Most Singaporeans do not know. Many also think Nasi Padang is the same as anything cooked by Malays. The Minang community in Singapore has a well-documented proud and long culinary heritage. Since you mentioned the owners of the hotel are Chinese Indonesians, then they should know better.

Nasi Padang is best savoured over several visits. Basically, a meal should consist of a heap of steaming rice accompanied by one or two protein dishes (dont mix seafood with animal potein), a tempeh-?tahu dish, a sambal condiment, and one or two veg dishes. Traditionally there are no desserts. Instead, take some slices of tropical fruit to wash down the rempahness of the meal (again, not traditional). So there are 30 over choices. So , more 100 permutations of dishes. Do your maths to see the required no of visits

Greg. First of all. Good job with the channel and your reviews. My family and I were drooling when we came across this vid. Even my picky teenager said she'd like to try . So I made reservations for 6 to celebrate my dad's birthday(big NP fan) (4/6/2023 Sun). My mum kept asking if it was good as my dad is fussy and I assured her that it is. Confident of your 4 visits and rave reviews. Unfortunately, it turned out to be the worst NP we ever had. My excited teen ended up eating only keropok and the peanut sauce. I spent over $300 for food that no one enjoyed. I felt terrible for raising everyone's expectations and honestly nothing was palatable. Rendang was bland Mutton curry was watery and meat wasn't fresh Bad aftertaste Asam Pedas. Watery and bland. Just assam water with chilli. The prawn dish again was bland. Only good thing was that the prawns were fresh but they weren't cleaned. Totally unacceptable for hotel standards. We went for lunch and nothing tasted freshly prepared. Even the fried tahu for tahu goreng was turning sour. Besides the chendol, ice kachang and bubor chacha, there was thin cold slices of Kueh. The Kueh lapis was tasty but it was so hard as it was straight out of the fridge. All it needed was a quick steam. I don't understand how simple things like this were overlooked. The chef and his team obviously took no pride or even interest in serving up decent fare for their customers. How can you call it Nasi Padang if not a single dish even had a hint of the fragrance of serai, lengkuas or daun limau purut? I have ever been this disappointed with food. Experience made worse since we were there celebrating my dad's birthday. Thankfully, the staff were sweet in accommodating the celebration with cake and song but it sadly it didn't make up for the lackluster buffet. I shared this disappointment with the F&B manager and was given some vouchers and was asked to call before coming the next time. But honestly, even if it was a free meal, I'm never returning. So Greg, I would strongly suggest you amend your thumbnail caption as not to mislead your other viewers. Honestly I would not have gone if not for your rave reviews. I've never known of any other food blogger with that level of commitment and I truly appreciate it. But this video might discredit all the good you've done thus far if more of viewers like me as mislead and disappointed. All the best with what you do and just be extra careful the next time you stamp your approval ok. Makan on!
@GregoryLeow

Hi, Sorry to hear about your disastrous experience but good that you feed-backed to them that it was not up to standard. To be honest, that’s why buffets are very hard to recommend - so many dishes, corporate environment and rotating chefs if the restaurant is unlucky. The best I could do at that point was to go more than once to make sure that the standard was good for that period (and hope they maintain it for the foreseeable future) I have heard from some other people - many love it, some hate it and some others are lukewarm on it and some others who went more than once say that the standard varies depending on who is head chef - that one is better than the other? This is pure speculation though. Hopefully they manage to get some consistency in the food standard. Thanks for your lengthy comment! P.s. the kueh is outsourced and was always terrible.

The first time we stayed in Singapore (1999) our hotel was the Pen-Excel. When it came to dinner time we took one look at the menu prices, turned around and walked out of the hotel looking for something a bit cheaper; we ended up in Hill St Foodcentre, and I've never looked back - over 20 years of Singapore hawker food holidays behind me now! I'm back there in July & August after missing out for four years, and I will definitely be checking this buffet out.

from the video, i think they never claim to be the most authetic or the original nasi padang, in fact Greg mentioned they hire 2 malaysian chef to cook (not 2 chef from Padang). . its just a way of bringing the dish to locals here - never a competition of who is the real, who is not Separately i think Greg did an amazing job (as always) of doing research, several tasting before doing his videos. Kudos to you Greg

Food will always be tweaked to adapt to the local taste, it has happened all around the world and Malay food in Singapore is no exception. I dont think anyone has the right to claim authenticity or gatekeep any food, but rather just appreciate the diversity that comes with food and culture.
