Mustaine said 'Set the world afire' was the first song he wrote after being fired from Metallica... it was originally titled 'Megadeth'. But he wasn't happy w/ the initial version, so he rewrote it multiple times and finally made it onto Megadeth's 3rd album... 'Into the lungs of hell' had a keyboard intro that wasn't prominent on the original version... on the remixed version, u can hear it like a cinematic entry. The 3rd album was recorded w/ guitarist Jeff Young and drummer Chuck Behler... both were fired by 1989... Mustaine & Ellefson were jacked out of their mind on alcohol & drugs when this record wss made...but it sold better than 'Peace sells'🤘🤘

I read somewhere Dave wrote it in one sitting after hearing about Cliff's passing, bombed out on H. Keep going man, you should hear this stuff live, unreal. Did anybody see him on Celebrity Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? First person to win the fastest question, so he was the first to play. Won the million for his charity of choice and split. The rest of the celebrities did not win the million, even though they all stuck around and helped each other by shouting out what they thought were the correct answers from the peanut gallery. I am in the minority but I like this album better than Peace Sells on the strength of Into the Lungs of Hell, Set the World Afire, Hook in Mouth, In my Darkest Hour, and Liar. Those are by far the strongest songs on the album and the leftover 3 songs are a mixed bag. My favorite Megadeth era was the first 4 records and for the very reason you stated, because he was so angry. All those songs aren't directed at Metallica but he was able to channel his anger at Metalllica and create some really good music. Love the reaction. Just a little correction: in the instrumental "Into The Lungs Of Hell", Mustaine plays all solos. In "Set The World Afire", Mustaine plays the first solo. The guy who replaced Chris Poland is named Jeff Young, and he plays that big solo at the end of the song. Young is not as talented as Poland, but he is a virtuoso, too. He had a few tasty solos on "SO FAR, SO GOOD... SO WHAT!", which is the only album he appears on with Megadeth.

I love that this album reminds me of the Fallout Games even though this album predated them by several years. It also perfectly encapsulates what Megadeth is and embraces their snarky, cocky attitude (using a 50s crooner about the same subject matter before literally dropping a bomb on it to show that the oldies are dead, Megadeth is where the kids are at!) But it definitely gives an impression of nuclear war and embraces the paranoia of the cold war which was rampant in the late 80s and early 90s. Thanks for checking it out!! I love all of Megadeth's albums but this one is about a B tier for me. I prefer the tightness and melody of albums such as Endgame and Countdown rather than the overt punk influence of this album. But this one sounds unlike any other album I've heard. The gritty slightly off key lo-fi production Gives So Far So Good So What an atmosphere like nothing else.

I am SO glad you picked the first two songs for the same vid, since they're kind of "linked", ITLOH being sort of an "intro" track of sorts. It stands alone just fine, as does STWA, but for a first-time reaction/listen, they must be heard in their original sequence, consecutively! Man these tunes take me back to when I first discovered them... wow... good times, good days.... Well, except for the daily threat of nuclear destruction hanging over our heads, which inspired albums and songs like these to begin with, lol.

Love this album. This one and Peace Sells were my introduction to Megadeth and will always be my favorites. Tks for bringing back some good teenage memories. Cheers!

I heard this album when it fist came out in 1987. I have not stopped listening since. A classic from when Megadeth still played thrash!

Megadeth was and is still just awesome! Dave has amazing talent. That's why he still makes music like no one else now a days. New edge but still the old feel. Great lyrics. Riffs to make your head headbang. Try Ashes in your Mouth.

That creepy sounding record you hear playing before the explosion starts Set the World Afire is from an actual song. I didn't know that until I heard it at the end of a Simpsons episode haha. It was called "I Don't Want to Set the World On Fire" sung by a band called The Ink Spots, recorded in the 1940s. Players of Fallout 3 might know it.

This is awesome. I can't believe your reacting to this. Hook in the Mouth is the best. Glad I found your channel. Listen to their song Liar off this album
