Outlaws is an American Southern rock band from Tampa, Florida. Formed in 1967 by guitarists/vocalists Frank Guidry, Hughie Thomasson, Herbie Pino and Hobie O'Brien. Drummer David Dix and bassist Phil Holmberg joined the band as well. They are best known for their 1975 hit "There Goes Another Love Song" and extended guitar jam "Green Grass and High Tides" from their 1975 debut album, plus their 1980 cover of the Stan Jones classic " Riders in the Sky".

I went to the famous "Day On The Green" in Oakland, CA in 1977 which featured Peter Frampton, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Santana and Outllaws. Yes Skynyrd killed with Free Bird...but these guys were awesome too as the opener! They also killed on this song!

@@somersetcace1 I came out out of it pretty good, as I was 18 and was already fairly tan from spending a LOT of time at our pool and the beach. My 19 year old brother Steve wasn't as lucky as me...he was light skinned and spent most of his time indoors watching Star Trek! lol

Sweet! I missed that one but I did make it to Led Zeppelin's Day On The Green that year (the first of 2 shows, on Saturday). Judas Priest and Rick Derringer opened for them. Saw Santana at Berkley's Greek Theater and finally got to see Frampton play in the mid-1980s at a rock club (he was only 10 feet away!). Missed original Skynyrd but I was there at the awesome 1987 reunion with Ronnie's kid brother singing. Never got to see the Outlaws in person.

What do you get when very talented guys play lead guitar, two on a Gibson Less Paul and the main lead on a Fender Stratocaster with a Bass player and Drummer.....these guys, The Outlaws. You should see them live with all four standing side by side it's awesome.

This is the style of music I grew up with in the 70s. Country rock and the Outlaws were some of the best. There'd be a pig roasting in the ground, a free beer truck with taps on the side, everyone in cut offs, guys bare chested, girls in halter tops. Old school mj fragrance in the air (we looked down on skunk weed). It was a great time. ❤ You would've been welcome. 😊

Every player sang lead and harmony vocals except for the drummer. It's Hughie Thomasson on lead vocals here and he also takes the first (Strat) leads. Billy Jones takes the second (Les Paul) leads, Henry Paul on rhythm guitar, Frank O'Keefe is the bass player, Monte Yoho on drums. Rest In Peace Frank, Billy, and Hughie.

Well now, I forgot I suggested this back when you did The Marshal Tucker Band. These guys were called "The Guitar Army" for good reasons as you now know. I saw them with the Tucker band back in the Good Ol Days. Thanks again for another great band added to you awesome Playlist.

You should check out Hurry Sundown by the Outlaws its a great tune. This band was know as The Fla guitar army. for its 3 guitar line up . They came out before Molly Hatchet and Lynyrd Skynyrd .

Two world class guitarists in Hughie Thomason and Billy Jones rip to both. Hughes and Billy along with Henry Paul (Blackhawk) provided ououtstanding vocal work. All their albums are terrific, but "Playin' To Win" is 2 steps ahead of all southern rock bands IMHO, yes including Skynard.

The first rock concert my parents ever let me go to when I was a young teenager was The Outlaws opening for Black Sabbath on their Heaven and Hell tour. Musta been 1981 or thereabouts. My buddies and I found seats right up front center stage. Imaging that twin guitar jam extravaganza from this song tearing up the fretboards ten feet in front of you. Fire! The Outlaws kept the rock in country rock. Funny though, nobody ever yells out "Green Grass & High Tides" at a band the way they yell out "Freebird"... I suppose that might be a good thing though. Heh.

Skynyrd may have been more popular than the Outlaws but this song blows Freebird away in every category. The rhythm guitars, the leads, the vocals...wow. I've been listening to both these songs for decades and that's my take on it. Actually, Ian Anderson is Jethro Tull, whom I love!
