The second movie is good, but I don't think as good as the 1st. The 3rd movie is great imho. There is a conspiracy theory out there that actually predates the comics regarding Men in Black (MiB) being a shadowy government agency that is out there to keep the general population from learning about aliens. There have been UFO researchers that report interacting with MiB agents in the past.

You really HAVE to see Casablanca!! It’s widely considered to be one of the greatest films ever made. I love watching young people especially react to it-they are initially dismissive of any black and white film being interesting, then they are quickly sucked in and start forming allegiances to various characters.

If you react to it here, I'd appreciate it. If you don't, that's cool too. It'd be a good date movie with your wife. Just a suggestion.

Trivia for Men in Black: 1. Director Barry Sonnenfeld was previously the cinematographer for "Big" and "Misery." He also directed "The Addams Family" previously seen on James' reviews. 2. Steven Spielberg himself is one of the "aliens" that MIB is watching over (if you recognize Sylvester Stallone as Rocky, Spielberg is the one above him in the top left corner). Among the others on the board were Barry Sonnenfeld himself, his daughter, George Lucas, fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi, and the infamous politician Newt Gingrich. 3. Nominated for 3 Oscars in 1997: Best Art Direction, Best Makeup, and Best Original Score. It won in the makeup category. Main designer Rick Baker holds the record for most nominations (11) and wins (7) since the makeup category was introduced in 1981. 4. Men in Black's Oscar win ties in interestingly: Titanic tied two records that year, most nominations (14) and most wins (11). Two of the three they lost were in the acting categories. Therefore, Men in Black was the only film to beat out Titanic in a technical category that year. 5. Vincent D'Onofrio (Edgar the Alien) put knee braces on so he couldn't bend his legs, and taped up his ankles, giving him his gait for the film. 6. Just like in "Rain Man" earlier this week, Ray-Ban sunglasses saw a significant increase in sales, that specific brand "Predator 2" going from $1.6 million to $5 million. 7. According to the novelization of the movie, J was right to shoot little Tiffany in the training sequence. It turns out J was right - she was studying quantum physics because she was an alien trying to destroy the world, and the other two are harmless. 8. Linda Fiorentino (Laurel/Agent L) reportedly beat Barry Sonnenfeld in a poker game to get the part. 9. To make sure that no animals were harmed, Will Smith actually crushed mustard packets at the end. 10. The truck driver at the beginning was Jon Gries, who played Uncle Rico in "Napoleon Dynamite." He mentions "fishing in Cuernavaca," and the sign points to Nevada State Road 375. Both are inside jokes - SR 375 is known as the "Extraterrestrial Highway," because it's close to Area 51, and Cuernavaca is a city, where it's rumored that a UFO crashed there in 1951.

The Men in Black refers to a conspiracy theory surrounding a group of clandestine agents who show up to suppress and silence witnesses to paranormal events, usually surrounding UFO sightings. Stories about such a group have been around since at least the 1940s, if not earlier. The comic took this concept and turned it into a very dark, cynical comedy, and from that we got this buddy cop movie, which is severely less dark, but still cynical and comedic.

A little fun fact: The guy at the restaurant who "got a break" was a dummy created from moulds of the special effects make up artist, Rick Baker, who did all the make up effects in the MIB movie series. Rip Torn (Zed) actually went on a few dates with my grandma. Back when she lived in Texas and they were out there shooting a movie. He was drinking moonshine and went to the bathroom. He was in there for a long time so she went to go check on him and she heard scratching. She asked if he was OK. Inside the bathroom, everything was tiled. The walls and the door we’re all tiled. With him being drunk, he couldn’t find the door, and was scratching around, trying to find where it was.

This movie is a fractal based upon the synechdoche: "What is the last thing to go through a bug's mind when it hits a windshield? Its ass." Most obvious with the bug in the opening titles, Mikey, Sneed, the exterminator getting gassed by his own spray nozzle, the ship hitting the truck, J flying back into the winshield of a car upon firing his Noisy Cricket, and of course, K blasting his way out of the bug and Dr. Weaver finishing it off. Every scene is basically built up to a head and then popped like a pimple. And somehow, despite the monotony of repetition, it never gets boring.

I remember in 1997 a lot of good movies came out. I was in high school and this was one of my favourite movies - until As Good As It Gets, a terrific comedy drama with Jack Nicholson, Helen Hunt, Greg Kinnear and Cuba Gooding came out. After all the good movies that came out in the late 80s and early 90s, I thought things were slowing down, but 1997 roared back with a vengeance. Will Smith was fresh off Independence Day and was a certified movie star after this. I still see Seven Pounds as his best film, but when this came out, I was just the right age and I couldn’t get enough of it.

Hey, James! I noticed your shirt.... Good for you, man! I have a pink t-shirt that reads: "Real men rock pink". I wear pink in remembrance of my first wife. While it was Ovarian Cancer that took her from me, she was also a Breast Cancer survivor. I have a lot of pink shirts that I'll wear, especially this month (she died in Aug 2006). Men in Black is a fun movie, and kinda relevant these days, if you think about it. With UAPs becoming a more commonly known thing. I think we are being slowly prepped to learn the full truth, because K makes a great point in this movie: "The PERSON is smart. PEOPLE are dumb, panicky animals".

Judging by the big guns in the pic you can bet it's an action movie. 😋 Your gonna love it! I was feeling for the poor Pug too. I haven't seen any of the other MIBs but yeah check them out. (But not before seeing Cassablanca.)

If the bug ate J at the end, it wouldn't do much, he doesn't chew his food so he would have been swallowed, and fell out the stomach since the bug was already in half lol.

The guy who plays Edgar the cockroach went on to be a lead detective in Law And Order SVU for probably 15 years. It was a really popular show. Pretty funny. I hope you do all 3 MIB as i think the 3rd is more widely liked. I wish you could skip 2 but i know you can't lol. Hope you and your family are doing well

I was unaware of this but apparently there was a lot of theories around this time that Elvis was an alien which probably explains the hinted idea in the animated movie Lilo and Stitch(it comes on & an alien says he loves this song as if to imply Elvis is an alien still singing in space). This is an interesting movie series, if you're curious there are women in black we just focus on the guys until the 4th one Men in Black International.(I thought it was nice but some say it's a mixed bag) If you're looking for a weird book with interesting stories you should try House of Leaves. Just be careful cause the way text is put on some pages are meant to be weird/mess with you.

This is my favorite, but all three are pretty good. X-Files was a great monster of the week show. Some great TV right there. Glad you got a kick out of the men in black, it really is a lot of fun. I watch the first three every few years to just relax and remember. There are so so many great movies for you, I hope you get to soak in them for this channel. Books are always king, but a good movie can be a fun breather. 🐾

The second one is okay (not as good as the first). The third one is probably the best one (at least it is my favorite). The fourth is back to okay, but I think is the least liked of the four, but I liked it better than the second (which is still enjoyable). The actor who plays Jeebs (the actor who was also in Galaxy Quest) has been in a lot of films, mostly in supporting roles, but is most well known for being the lead in a TV show called Monk where he plays a detective suffering from OCD and agoraphobia. It's a great show and brought attention to the issues of OCD-though many complained that it made light of condition turning it into a running gag. (It is very serious and devastating to those who suffer from it)

Tony Shalhoub is also amazing (and hilarious) in Marvellous Mrs Maisel, definitely a show worth watching if you're a fan of his (final season was this year). I rewatched all of Monk last year and really enjoyed it again. It definitely felt like they were using his OCD as a joke in the first season (which made it hard to watch sometimes), but they seemed to take it more seriously as the show went on. It was more about him trying to overcome his limitations than about laughing at him, especially as he started making progress in therapy. Definitely worth a rewatch if you haven't seen it for a while! (Also I'd forgotten how many amazing guest stars were on the show!)

Consider reading the book "Men in Black" by Steve Perry (and another writer). It's fun, more background stories and the parts from Bug's point of view are hilarious, lets just say he's a true noble hero in his mind.

Men in Black is a movie series where all the movies actually are good. (In my own personal opinion.) They're all watchable and funny and enjoyable with great action stuff going on, including the latest one. Btw. The dog probably had the time of his life being shook about. Dogs like being played with. :D Also, does a movie HAVE to be Murican for you to watch it? Because, you might want to watch "Ronin". It's a friggin incredible 1990s thriller/heist type movie. Awesome actors, awesome story, wicked wicked action sequences. Noticably different an experience compared to same genre US movies, why exactly that is you'll see when you see it. :)

Considering the opening credits did mention 'Alien Design' why was it a surprise when an alien is shown? Apart from that, a fun reaction to a fun movie.

The first one is definitely the best out the 3. (Yes I know about the 4th one, but I heard it was actually really bad, so yeah. Doesn’t count.) The third is definitely a step-up compared to the 2nd one. I would just stop after the 3rd one.

James, you really should watch all three MIBs. They work very well as a trilogy. imo they are all great movies - thanks for your reactions....maybe you can talk to us about some of your favorite books in the different genres. What movies have you watched that are based on books you've read? What's your favorite book?

Executive producers (like Steven Spielberg on this) don't really have much at all to do with actually making a movie... an executive producer is usually just some guy with a big name who puts his name on a project to help secure funding or something like that, but normally are only nominally involved (at best) with any creative choices or any of the actual production. Producers can be much more hands-on, but this varies from producer to producer how much they are directly involved with the creative/writing/filming/editing process. Directors are the guys most in charge who are usually actually on set when the film is being shot.
