I was an engineer in a cube less than a year into my first corporate job when this film came out. I saw this on a Saturday evening with my wife at the theater in January 1999. On Monday morning I was downsized. As I walked across the employee parking lot with all my things in a box the company helicopter took off and flew over me. The parking lot was full of snow and sand, dropped to provide traction. The helicopter kicked it all up, pelting me with sand and snow. At that moment I really FELT this movie.

Before this movie, Swingline had no red stapler. The art department painted it red just to make it stand out more. After the movie came out, Swingline was absolutely overwhelmed by inquiries from people that couldn't find a red one in stores so they decided to release a limited production run. It remains one of their most sold products! I have bought one for every job I've had.

This whole movie is based on a two-minute cartoon Mike Judge made called "Office Space featuring Milton". The main character is Milton, an office worker with inhumanly thick glasses complaining about how many times they've made him move his desk; enter Bill, with coffee cup, who commits the final indignity upon Milton by seizing his stapler. The cartoon ends with Milton promising to burn down the building.

I don't even work in this type of setting, but being told repeatedly, by several different people, that you need to do a thing, when you simply forgot to do the thing one time, you'll remember it in the future, and didn't mean any ill intent by it, is the most demoralizing thing. I actually feel my anxiety increasing just watching this reaction! Also, I'm not sure what it says about me that I've owned a few of the pieces of furniture Peter has in his condo- most importantly the IKEA Ektorp sofa (although I had the one that had a chaise on it) in that brown twill. It was a good sofa- the cover could be changed out if you wanted a different look, or tossed in the washer if you spilled something.

Ooooh.....lemme tell you about strange dreams. This may be a bit lengthy so feel free to indulge me or not. But I think this went from an odd dream to a spooky-ish one later on. So, I had this dream in 5th grade. I remember that because it's one of the few dreams I have ever had that I remember even just a part of. And I remember nearly all of this one. The dream took place in my 3rd grade classroom with my 3rd grade teacher. You may or may not be familiar with a series of books called Sideways Stories From Wayside School. Is a silly story collection about odd and supernatural type things that occur in this school. Starting with it being completely messed up right from its very construction. They were to build a one story building that had 100 classrooms in it. Instead they built a 100 story building and there's one classroom on each floor. In my dream my 3rd grade classroom is in a building built like that 100 stories tall. Then out of nowhere we look out the window and there's a tornado. The tornado toppled the building while we were all in it but everybody survived and we weren't even injured. And the school didn't fall on the playground so the very 1st thing our teacher did was let us have recess. This is the oddest part. She had some sort of Is flat pieces of cardboard that were painted yellow and red. She passed them out to us but as she was handing them to us she would shake her arm kind of like you're shaking out a towel. And these flat pieces of cardboard unfolded into working airplanes. Little tiny cartoon looking airplanes that only one person can sit in. The end of my dream was me and my best friend accidentally flying directly into the rubble of the school. The end. 7 years later that dream popped into my head DRAMATICALLY After the initial shock of 4 airplanes being hijacked and crashed into buildings and a field wore off.
