The Black American beauty shows not only what we felt was fashionable, but our hair also reflects our socio-political stances as a community as well. Not long ago, in some parts of the country, it was illegal for Black women to wear our natural hair in public. We would have to keep it covered in scarves and wraps. Then, a few decades later, the relaxer was invented and in order to assimilate and have an easier life, it became popular for us to chemically straighten our hair and wear it in styles similar to white Americans. The 70s became a turning point for us culturally and there was a widespread movement to regain pride in our blackness. Meaning, embracing our natural hair and features. It was an act of resistance following the civil rights movement of the 50s and 60s. As well as an act of self-love. Braids have always been in style for us, but the 90s definitely heightened our love and appreciation for the various styles, especially box braids. Braiding serves not only as a protective style, but the process was also a unique way for us to socialize with each other. Growing up, going to the beauty salon or braiding shop was more than just a hair appointment lol. My dad would take me, my mom, my granny, aunt and cousin to the salon and we would be there all day. No exaggeration. Lol. We picked up breakfast on the way and had lunch there. Sometimes dinner too. So, yeah. Just thought I would give some insight about the last video they watched. Our hair has always been tied to our identity and vast cultures. So it’s neat seeing that reflected on screen in a discreet way.

Being humble is an important part of Korean culture, so they would never admit to meeting the Korean standard even though they are both gorgeous. Koreans prize humility so much so that admiting something like that would be seen as bragging and egotistical to the average Korean.

As a korean tomboy who grew up outside of korea, one of my nightmare whenever I visit Korea is the fact thaf I feel so uncomfortable whenever I go out. Sure not all koreans care but they care enough to make people unlike them feel uncomfortable.

the 100 years of beauty germany one has the happy ending with 2 styles going back into one. Might want to check that out too ^_^. Edit: in fact, you can react to all the other 100 years of beauty and make it a series. It would be interesting to see the opinions regarding the rest of the world not just the US :) (PS: keeping on equating the US with "western style" would be the same as me checking something asian and only looking at China related things). Sorry, as a European I just had to get it off my chest and I'm also curious about the countries of Africa where there's so much diversity in culture and beauty
@queenmoreau2098
@queenmoreau2098 4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, 100 years of Beauty the original series by The Cut did not make a lot of African videos, mostly European and Asian ones. They only made three in Africa out of the 32+ videos that they made and they're not going to make anymore it seems like: Egypt: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJDbkKCeg8yVqpI Ethiopia: kzbin.info/www/bejne/onuqi3usnrhprdE&feature=emb_logo and Kenya: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eKXMYXl8lLmWjqc&feature=emb_logo They didn't even touch on Central, Southern, nor Western Africa at all. But individuals on KZbin did their own 100 years inspired beauty videos to feature their own countries and cultures that were left out and didn't get representation: Sudan: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hIvbp2SBqMSejrs&feature=emb_logo Somalia (men and women): kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKrdlalrpKt9htU Nigeria Women (Igbo): kzbin.info/www/bejne/hpfFd4dmqMmCaLs&feature=emb_logo Nigerian Men (Igbo): kzbin.info/www/bejne/anbbhK1uiLmfmNU&feature=emb_logo Ivory Coast: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aqm0cqhsgK2cjpI&feature=emb_logo

I think they only did a few videos on African beauty because there’s so many countries in Africa and for most of the time varied widely from each other. I really think they should’ve put in the effort to cover more places in Africa though because I know that there were some absolutely gorgeous styles. I love looking at traditional fashion from Africa and India because the colors are so vibrant and beautiful!

@Thelondonbadger Actually it was men in the beginning, telling woman what to wear and what not to wear. Even though men tell woman to have less makeup is because the do want to see more natural beauty and more flaws. But woman are now considered in love with themselves if they put on a lot of makeup. I often hear guys saying it's unattractive when girls wear a lot of makeup, where before that guys were telling girls to cover their heels, wear makeup etc...

The so-called "beauty standards" are cultural inventions of a few leaders of the fashion market and are followed by fashion professionals (make-up artists, hairdressers, couturiers, etc) and by women. We men let ourselves be carried away by the "natural standards" that reside at the bottom of the nervous system and configured by the genes, in turn modified by the laws of evolution. Thanks to this, a woman is beautiful even if the "leaders" of fashion say she is thin or fat, and a beautiful woman is beautiful anywhere, in her homeland or on the other side of the world. And this is valid for the last 200,000 years for sure. By the way, the girls in the video are very pretty.
