In formal Filipino, Japan is Hapon, england is Inglatera, france is Pransiya, fencing is eskrima. These words sounds closer to French because these are of spanish origin. Gymnastics is himnastiko, bubble is bula. Markus is really young and his generation may not really know the Filipino counterparts but that's how language evolves.
@bokchoy9632Ай бұрын
Those are spanish words meaning tagalog did not created words for them. Tagalog is not a complete language it lacks many words. The philippine government needs to create more tagalog words to make tagalog speakers speak in full tagalog easier.
@kenb497Ай бұрын
@@bokchoy9632 these are nativized words therefore they are completely Filipino words now. Spelled differently and pronounced most of the time differently from the original word. 45% of english words are of French Origin. English speakers don't say they are French words cause they adopted it in their vocabulary and nativized it.

@@kenb497 No. You are just lazy to create new words. Or you want to be called spain of asia/latino of asia. Colonial mentality yan, masama yan sa economy. Tigil mo na yan.

yes tama ka, sa mga tagalog history books, hapon, tsina, estados unidos etc yung mga ginagamit na terms. medyo nakakalito lang rin yung talagang gagawin nila, nung una kase parang they are only after the differences of accent, kung paano ipronounce yung word.. not only marcus but same with the japanese girl..some of her answers not translated to nihongo.

In the Philippines. Japan is Hapon (Bansang Hapon = Japanese Country) England is Inglatera English = Ingles France is Pransya French = Pranses Bubbles = Bula Squirrel = Ardilya or *Iskwirel* Gymnastics = Himnastiko (Gymnastics with Filipino accent = Jimnastiks) Swimming = Paglangoy (Noun) Lumalangoy (Verb) Fencing = Pensing or Espadahan. (Eskrima uses sticks, knives or other long weapons but the moves is different from fencing) Boat = Bangka Skateboard = Skateboard (Skeyt bord) I don't know about Marcus but he seems like he doesn't know a lot of these words, I don't know if he's too young or if his generation is more inclined with the English Language.

Just a note, the lexicon in the Philippines is greatly influenced by centuries of colonialism and trade, and the education system is mainly patterned to American style, hence many of the words used in everyday conversations are borrowed. Especially nowadays, many kids have English as their first language and struggle with Filipino. A combination of Tagalog and English, called TagLish, is the most commonly used pseudo-language.

Squirrels are not indigenous to the Philippines that's why we don't have a term for it. We plainly call Carlos Yulo's sport as gymnastics since English is also one half of our official languages. The other half being Filipino or Tagalog language which has lots of loan words from other languages. In Filipino, Hapon and Inglatera can still be used to pertain to Japan and England respectively and Pransiya or Francia for France.
