The spider species they used was the communal huntsman spider, native to (you guessed it) Australia and introduced into New Zealand. Huntsman are generally solitary, but the communal one lives in groups under tree bark. Although the communal huntsman is relatively small, the huntsman group also includes some of the largest spiders. The golden huntsman is the largest in Australia and it has a legspan of ~25cm (10 inches). The majority of large spiders you see on youtube videos in australian homes are common huntsmans which are smaller than that, about the size of your hand splayed out. The largest spider by leg span is the giant huntsman in Laos, with a 12 inch legspan...

"Eight Legged Freaks" is also a scary movie about spiders. Not quite as terrifying as Arachnophobia. But on the DVD of it came the directors' film project as a student, and THAT was far more scary. Because to market, a story has to hit some points, but a student film doesn't HAVE any such restriction, so it is far scarier.

For those who know it's for hernias but don't know what they're feeling for, as OP said, your balls lift when you cough. A hernia is a tear or separation in the muscle wall/floor of your abdomen and your intestines can begin to drop into the scrotum (ballsack), so when your testes lift, they can tell easier if there is a hernia by feeling for the intestinal drop.

Her daughter (4) would NOT use a public restroom. On one of their trips, they stopped at a gas station for the daughter to use the bathroom. The lights did not work, so the mother held the door open to let in light from the outside. Suddenly, the daughter starts screaming bloody murder. Turns out, a frog was in the toilet and as the daughter was using the toilet, the frog jumped up and hit her bum. Emotional damage.

The dad is Jeff Daniels, probably best known for Dumb & Dumber (with Jim Carrey). He was more recently in the show The Newsroom, written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, which was pretty good. He won the award for Best Actor in a Drama for the first season.

Loved to see you scared, Ash. Sad to see the late Julian Sands here. Fun facts here: 1) Steven Spielberg realized here about the resemblance between John Goodman and Fred Flintstone, and oofered him the role. 2) Steven Spielberg had planned for the film to be joined for the 2nd Roger Rabbit short, "Roller Coaster Rabbit". But Michael Eisner (Then Disney's CEO) put the short as an aditional atraction for "Dick Tracy". Spielberg wasn't happy about this and after "Trail-Mix Up", the third and final Roger Rabbit short, other projects with the character were canned.

I was around 5 or 6 when this movie was released. My mom and her boyfriend decided to play it, it was a new movie and they didn't think it would be traumatizing. However, after the Goodman scene, I was DEEPLY traumatized and couldn't watch any more. I bolted out of the room, with my newly-acquired arachnophobia firmly in place. It took me many years to attempt to "face my fears." By the time I did, I found the ending kind of silly, but my phobia was already deeply ingrained.

In the graphic novel they showed the original opening of the movie. he wasn't two, when Dr. Ross was a baby the spider descended down onto his face while he was in the crib. That memory scarred him forever. That was why he was paralyzed with fear at the end of the movie, and you could still hear a little bit of the music that was playing on his mobile in that final scene if you listen carefully.

I saw this movie in a theatre with my best friend. As terrifying as it is to watch at home, it was horrifying to see in the theatre. It was all too easy to feel like the spiders were crawling over and under everything in the theatre. By the end, my friend and I were holding each other’s clenched hands and had our feet up on the seat in front of us trying not to run screaming up the aisle. I’ll never forget it! Loved the reaction and am looking forward to the rest of HalloBeans!

I'm so glad there are no properly eusocial spiders, like imagine a thousand spiders cooperating like ants, closest thing that exists are social spiders that kinda live together, they still build huge webs together though

The spiders in the movie are Delena cancerides, the Social huntsman so yes, these are the spiders that live together. They're native to Australia although those in the film are from New Zealand; they were introduced there some time back and are known as the Avondale spider.
@andreatreese8347

They chose the huntsman spider because "leggy" spiders are extremely creepy, and they are defs all legs. However, they are also huge, fast, and agile--you put one on the end of a pencil and it can easily climb to the top on the very tips of its long legs. But they are also completely harmless--they are a "friendly" spider, in that they don't bite unless very agitated, and will happily crawl over anything you put them on.

Creepy-Crawly facts about Arachnophobia: (1990) 1) John Goodman’s hollow-soled boot. When it came to the welfare of the live spiders that were used during the making of the film, the team went to great lengths to prevent any harm coming to the little critters! In one scene, where John Goodman’s character, McLintock the exterminator, stomps on a spider, they actually used a boot with a hollowed-out sole, so that it would trap the spider instead of killing it. 2) Natural causes. If any shots of dead spiders needed to be filmed, the crew had to be very particular about which arachnid corpses they would use for propping. They would only use spiders that had died of natural causes. 3) Big bob. The huge spider that gets into the coffin at the start of the film was actually a bird eating tarantula. At the time of filming, there was only one in the whole of the US. Frank Marshall, who directed the movie, decided to call the spider ‘Big Bob’ after his friend Robert Zemeckis. 4) One of the MythBusters built the animatronic Big Bob double. Near the end of the film, the characters face off against the enormous bird eating tarantula, which the director had nicknamed Big Bob. Whilst a live spider was used for some of the filming, a mechanical double had to be built for some of the scenes. This job went to none other than Jamie Hyneman from MythBusters! As he often says on the show, he used to work in movie effects, and this animatronic spider was one of the first movie props he created. 5) Steven Spielberg hid in the footwell? In a video with GQ, John Goodman revealed that when they were filming a shot of his exterminator truck travelling down a road, the world-renowned director Steven Spielberg (who executive produced the movie) was crouching down in the passenger footwell. Spielberg said, ‘only we will know I was here.’

This is the scariest of all the spider movies, for one reason: Something like this could actually happen. How many unknown species could there be in the Amazon rainforests, waiting to wreak deadly havoc on the rest of the world.....with only their natural environment keeping them in check? But in the name of development, people keep clear-cutting the rainforests. One of these days, something like these spiders, or worse, could be unleashed as a result.
