Solar plane: Rebuild after CRASH!

In the summer of 2022 my solar plane crashed, not long after recording this video: • Solar powered flights ... This video shows some of the testing and flying of the new solar plane I built during the summer of 2023. The new plane is very similar to the last one, it performed great after all. But this new plane has better redundancy and is built to be more reliable.

Nice project! I also use dual elevator servos on larger / expensive planes. I set them to drive separate sections (L and R) of the elevator. If one jams in anything else than extreme end point, the other can likely save the plane. In your case it would have worked.

Nice, build a bigger one that can soar for days with a good battery management system, and use thermals next to mountains for free extra altitude. very nice indeed, keep doing more of this.

I have been thinking about having enough batteries onboard to last the night, but a much larger plane is needed. It would be a very expensive project! Also, as a hobby pilot, I am very limited in what altitude I am allowed to fly at. The battery management system is not a problem I think, I already have a simple BMS with passive balancing and overcharge protection.

What type of battery setup are you using? Would be great to know more about the battery and charger configuration.

The battery is 4S 2P Samsung 35E 18650 cells, total 7000mAh. Charge Controller is the Genasun GV5, 16.7-volt version. The battery also has a simple BMS with passive balancing that can also protect from overcharging if the Genasun fails or something. Discharging to power the plane bypasses the BMS entirely.

The total wingspan is 250 cm (100 inch), but the wing splits into two parts for transport and storage. Pretty easy to manage. But the solar cells are fragile, they can't handle any pressure, so I need to be very careful when handling them.
