Raphaël Domjan is an eco explorer and for his latest project, SolarStratos, he has built an electric plane powered by solar panels. The hope is to reach an altitude of 80,000 feet, setting a record for being the first manned solar plane to reach the stratosphere.
The aim of SolarStratos is to show what can be achieved through solar energy with the hope that the aviation industry takes notice and steers away from fossil fuel to more sustainable sources of power. They also plan to use the plane for scientific purposes - with zero-emissions, the plane can take sensitive atmospheric measurements without contaminating the samples with its own exhaust.

That is amazing ,I've dreamed of just such a flying capability,and to be in those flite levels in a solar powered glider type craft ,an everydays man, powered u-2 , adventure flying, and now ,here you go,,on just such a craft as I had dreamed and now the," spontaneous, same idea," has triggered here and there around the globe,as is seen from time to time ,in other kinds of fields and persuites,(sp), the adventurous minds of dreamers ,applied! Great thing for you and your team !

Now make it as a submarine you could make the wings foldable that folds inside the submarine would be cool to have a flying submarine. That can also drive on water with hydrofoils. Or a water plan.

I think a ducted prop (rather then ducted fan) is more efficient than just a prop due to the differences in tip vortex shaping. Ducted propellers work on a much larger volume of air at a lower speed than ducted fans which is how they beat them on efficiency at low speeds. They beat normal props by nearly eliminating the tip vortex issue.
@Derakday
@Derakday Жыл бұрын
umm i dont think you can reach higher than 18000ft becoz : -first the higher altitude have the thiner air density, the propeller will have a huge drop on efficiency unstill stalling. -second the heat will very hard to get rip from your plane in stratosphere and you have a keep running propeller and the solar panels is also receiving the heat. Anyway I hope you can find the solutions the solve those problem.

Is not necessarily that high. Just enough to see the curvature of Earth.

Heat is fixed by the drop in temperature at altitude. -60 degrees C at 40,000 feet is common. I know that there is an inversion of sorts at highter altitudes (or at least a drop in the rate of the temp going down) but heat will not be an issue.

Perlan Project Inc. is a not-for-profit aeronautical exploration and atmospheric science research organization that utilizes sailplanes (gliders) designed to fly at extremely high altitudes . The 2018 season was again based at El Calafate. The project acquired a Grob G 520 Egrett turboprop aircraft for use as a tow plane. This enabled Perlan II to be towed to 44,000 ft (13,411 m) This seems to be the highest glider tow, as records are not registered. On 26 August 2018 Jim Payne and Morgan Sandercock reached an altitude of 18,492 m (60,669 ft). This was followed by 19,439 m (63,776 ft) with Jim Payne and Miguel Iturmendi on 28 August 2018. On 2 September 2018, Jim Payne and Tim Gardner reached an altitude of 22,646 m (74,298 ft), surpassing the 73,737 ft (22,475 m) attained by Jerry Hoyt on 17 April 1989 in a Lockheed U-2: the highest manned heavier than air subsonic flight. The Perlan 2 could fly to 90,000 ft (27,000 m) if conditions allow, higher than the manned level flight altitude record of the SR-71 Blackbird at 85,069 ft (25,929 m).Previous records were measured with pressure altitude; high altitude soaring records now require GPS data. Interesting, earth albedo is 30% in intensity of direct sunlight and has almost the same spectrum as direct sunlight, a little less in the UV, but that is usually not a very large portion of what a solar cell uses, so the contribution from the underside would be significant.

What would it take to extend this to a more practical application, one that transports 350 passengers and 15 crew across an ocean? Much like Solar Impulse a single occupant can go far BUT a single occupant makes the Airplane a rich mans toy without much practical application
