Thank you, helpful. Thinking about buying the Focusrite Scarlet 8i6 and using it via S/PDIF with my Fractal Audio FM3 as the clock source.

Actually, most computers do have S/PDIF. The 1/8" mic input and audio outputs are usually equipt with it. Older audio cards have didicated jacks as well. I'm interested in trying it with my Linux system to connect my Eleven Rack which Linux does not find. But acording to a post I seen Linux does find S/PDIF. It only finds the MIDI side of the 11 rack and not the audio via USB. I would go Linux all the way if I can get my gear all up and running with it. My Presonus mixers Firewire died on me so that may have worked with Linux. Nice video.

I use S/PDIF into a Focusrite 18i20 G3 with cheap stereo RCA cable. Works great. I slave Focusrite on 48KHz clock and Focusrite automatically uses audio channels 11 and 12. The only downside, as you noted, is I have to use 48KHz clock in Logic.

Another reason you might want to use s/pdif out of axe fx is if you have a high quality DAC to handle the conversion. I have experimented with this and there is a noticeable difference if you have one. Cheers!

Doug I have the same presonus as you - what is the setting in axe edit you are using ? Internal or SPDIF/AES IN thanks much
@DougBsDigitalDen9 ай бұрын
Internal. I'm pretty sure that if you chose SPDIF/AES IN, the Axe-Fx III would be expecting a clocking signal from an external device. Thanks for asking!

Howdy I’m all setup toslink to spidif into my Apollo x But can I loop stomp boxes using the remaining analog AxeFx 3 connections on back 1-4 and will it work because I though those knobs didn’t work when going digital I have some new UAFX Fx I’d like to hear in my setup I also have a freaqout that would be a nice addition but I’m trying to avoid going into the front end right after, my guitar Thanks

I'm guessing, but I don't see why it wouldn't work. The SPDIF output is the same as either your OUT1 or OUT2.

The only thing that I can think of is to make sure you're using inputs 5&6 when using SPDIF.

Ok, is it just me per the USB connection to PC in order to utilize Editor. I just received my new turbo FM9, the “USB” jack on the unit looks like a “printer” usb jack NOT a regular USB jack - seems odd no one has mentioned this - kind of a big misnomer - or perhaps I’m completely missing something - Any Help Please and Thank You!!! 🤘
@DougBsDigitalDen Жыл бұрын
Yes, all of the Fractal modelers use the printer port USB type. Helix and (I think) the ToneX pedal also use this type of connector.
@ShawnONeal-w5p9 ай бұрын
It's a USB-B connector and "Just like USB-A, it’s the original designation for the two ends of a non-symmetrical cable. The differing form of USB-A and USB-B helps to enforce the mono-directional aspect of these iterations of USB. Data flow is bi-directional, but power may only flow from the host to the peripheral or receptor end and, therefore, the cable can only be connected in one way."

I'm wondering if you could leave the software clock as the master, and change the AxeFx to sync with that. I remember the AxeFx has a setting in there to use external clock. Cool little rabbit hole I just went down. From the Fractal Wiki Word Clock The clock source for the A/D and D/A converters is either AUTO/INTERNAL or SPDIF/AES. Axe-Fx III - Word Clock is recovered from the SPDIF/AES input signal. "The Axe-Fx III has word clock." sorce "Yes via SPDIF/AES in (which actually works better as a word clock than a word clock input)." [145] "If the Word Clock is set to SPDIF then you need to supply a signal to the SPDIF in to derive the word clock from. Otherwise the Axe-Fx is the master and you need to set your interface to be a slave." [146]

Love your videos, thank you so much, you're really helping the Fractal community and your work is greatly appreciated. I have a quick question, which I think you answered in the video but I want to make sure. What can you plug into the S/PDIF output on the FM3? Just Coaxial or a Mini Toslink too? Thanks, much love Peter

Sir, When recording with logic after connecting via spdif, is it possible to separate the dry track and the wet track into 2 tracks and record them simultaneously?

Guess I’m missing the boat here. Lol. I just run the xlr outs on the FM3 to two inputs on my apollo.
@DougBsDigitalDen Жыл бұрын
There's nothing wrong with doing it that way, it's just that SPDIF is easier, rock solid, and frees up those 2 channels on your Apollo.
@tdz69 Жыл бұрын
@@DougBsDigitalDenthanks Doug. Well…since I posted that comment I jumped and picked up an axe fx 3. I’m going to see about hooking that up via SPDIF. Looks like I’ll need a cable with different ends or the box you mentioned. Need to watch this video again to make sure I understand how to hook it up properly.

I have a 2626 and my ax is clocked from the interface. I guess it depends on which interface you have. Even within brands. But no, you don’t always have to default to using the ax clock. I’ve actually never heard of anyone having to do that.
@ChristopherOrth2 жыл бұрын
You don’t actually have to let the Axe fx do the clocking. I have an RME interface and can totally do clocking in the other direction.
@DougBsDigitalDen2 жыл бұрын
My old Apollo was the same way, but the majority of interfaces do need you to set the AXE-FX III as the clock source.

Great info BTW. So no real reason to use S/PDIF other than you already own S/PDIF gear as there is no actual audio quality advantage.
