Axe Restoration [Black Axe With Ebony Handle]

I used many techniques in the restoration of this rusty axe. With iron (III) chloride and coffee I blackened the rusty axe head. I made the new handle out of ebony, which now revealed a completely black axe. Restoring the old axe I had to grind, file, remove rust, harden, sandblast and saw. This old hand tool I found again on a flea market website and wanted it badly. This video is not only to quickly show someone something, but also to relax and escape from everyday life!
▬ What did I do ?! ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
The axe head was extremely rusted, so I removed the coarse rust with rust remover and a screwdriver. The remaining rust I removed with an electrolysis, because the result was not satisfactory I still sandblasted it. Afterwards I made the rough contour with an angle grinder and on the belt grinder I sanded the sides until almost no pitting was visible, up to a grit of 600. In the hardening furnace I now heated the axe to 820°C and quenched it in oil. Before dipping the old hand tool in iron (III) chloride and coffee, I ground the surface to a grit of 1500. The new wooden handle is made of ebony. Now all that was left was to assemble everything and the black axe was ready.

I used the following tools: Wire brush, screwdriver, rust remover spray, angle grinder, laboratory power supply, glass container, test tube, cable ties, side cutters, sandblasting cabinet, abrasive corundum, belt grinder, file, drawing needle, welding helmet, welding machine, sandpaper, orbital sander, hardening furnace, blacksmith tongs, immersion heater, cleaner, wire, iron (III) chloride, steel wool, instant coffee, knife, pencil, scroll saw, Japanese saw, jigsaw, wood file, leather strap

He also really likes the rust removal and chemical restoration type parts. After I posted this comment some of his siblings came out to watch also. They all really loved the turtle doing different things throughout. He's definitely still paying attention though as I overheard him telling his sibling to "Just watch and trust the process." 🤣

Great work! a little tip I learned while welding a cracks is you need to locate each end of the crack and drill out each end of the crack and then fill your drill hole and weld over. Maybe not a big deal on things like this but on bigger pieces that withstand more stress if you don't do it, the crack can still continue cracking. Great videos keep it up!

One thing I like about your videos is that you sow all the processes you tried, even those which failed or were not totally successful. That's very honest and teaches a lot. The only thing I would change is the length of subtitles, as they're too fast for me and I have to either rewind or pause the video to read them in full. But it's a great material!! I enjoy your restoration videos because they seem really genuine. I've watched too many where the item has supposedly sat in dirt for decades, and they all have the same green laden rust regardless of age or location found. Then it all chips away easily with a bit of poking of brushing. I can see your rust had really bonded with the surface over time and needed some real elbow work

When you’re really into watching old abandoned stuff, you can easily separate between fake and genuine ones. And yes, I’ve seen a channel faking many models cars with moss-liked decor and dirt, I can easily say it’s fake lmao. This type of bearded axe is frequently found in Bulgaria and the surrounding area by metal detection. They were hand forged from around 900CE to 1200CE and were popular throwing axes like the Francica during the middle Byzantium era during the middle ages. A good number of these were sold on Ebay around 15 years ago.

When you finished this ax it looked like a Viking weapon. That was an good choice wrapping tape around the handle it gave that viking accent to it. You must have a hard time finding old metal objects to restore. How did you learn all the chemicals and ways of burning off rust?

Yes!!!! Restauration doesn.t mean to make a new item. I study restauration at university; if i would show this to one of my teachers, they would get mad pretty bad. This is not how it.s done. He should go to museums and watch how weapons were restaured, with non distructively ways

This is more RestorArt. It's a whole new genre. It's restoring something useless, not to sit in a museum, but to be fully functional again, along with creating a new piece of art, as well! So a person can choose whether they wish to display or actually use the item-- or both! That's what I've understood from watching these types of channels. Although I am new to this one-- that piece would DEFINITELY look spectacular hanging near the hearth.

@@ForgottenShineRestoration I recently rescued (from the river) an old children's wheelbarrow. Must be old as it has wooden handles & very heavy. Wooden handles will get sanded & stained. Wheel some black paint just to sharpen the colour. Axle is good....bit of sanding & rustoleum. Bottom side exceptionally good shape.....sand & paint. The inside is my problem. Wayyyyyy rusty. My question is what's the best way to clean, restore & protect the inside? Needs to be a not to technical way, if possible. I'm 62 & handicapped, so operating power tools might be impossible, even if I had access. Oh, I forgot to mention, I'll be drilling holes & plan on turning it into a planter for the garden. It's most likely a hewing hatchet and that eye is most commonly found in Finnish carpentry axes and also sometimes Japanese carpentry axes

It seems like you could have used the tig (MIG) welder to do that just like you did with the head of the ax. Just curious.

The nylon bolt was a good idea but, the back of the clamp looked like it was in metal-to -metal contact with the axe head. So, the current ran through the clamp as well. You could see the clamp immediately reacting as soon as you turned on the machine.
