Knife Restoration [Purpleheart Handle With Violet Epoxyd Liner]

I have again used a new type of wood in the restoration of this rusty knife: Purple Heart. The special thing about this wood is, as the name suggests, that it is purple. Unfortunately, the old handle could no longer be used. I cleaned the blade from rust and polished it, but a little bit of pitting is still visible at the end because I could not grind the blade any further; otherwise, it would have become too thin. To restore the old knife, I had to drill, grind, file, remove rust and glue. I found this old hand tool again on a flea market internet site and really wanted it. Please be sure to also note that this video is not just to quickly show someone how something works, but also to relax and escape from everyday life!
▶ What did I do ?! ◀
The knife was badly rusted, so I used rust remover spray and a screwdriver to remove the coarse rust. I removed the remaining rust with a bath of rust remover. Then I used a belt sander to create the rough contour. In the hardening furnace, I heated the blade to 800 °C and quenched it in an oil bath, then tempered it three times at 200 °C for one hour. The surface of the old knife was then polished. I made the liner between the two halves of the handle myself using epoxy resin and purple paint. The two pins that hold the handle together were made on the lathe from brass. I used files to shape the two halves of the Purple Heart into their final form. The last step was to glue everything together, rub the handle with linseed oil varnish and sharpen the blade.

A tip for anyone working with Purpleheart... after sanding the timber will turn a brownish colour, after sanding place the timber outside in the sun. The UV light will turn it purple again. Then put on your finish to seal in the colour. Great video ❤

I found a very heavy knife under a house that I was renovating. The house was built in 1890 in Mobile, Alabama. It's full tang, about 24 inches, is quite heavy, the rivets are still there but the handle has rotted away. It has a hole through the steel about 3 inches from the tip and away from the edge. like it was made to hang on a peg in a butcher shop. It's shaped similar to a Bowie. I messed around with it a bit, cleaned it, sharpened it, and cut a chicken in half with one blow. It cuts beef bones with one blow as well. Your video makes me want to fully restore it and put a nice handle on it. Thanks.

Sehr schönes Video und erstklassiges Ergebnis ! So ein Messer ist eine Rarität ! Wo gibt`s das noch. Ich hatte irgendwann im Frühjahr mal mexikanisches Rosenholz für eine Messerscheide verwendet, excellentes Dekor und Finish. Hätte auch gut zum Messer gepasst. Und ich glaube, ich muss dir mal eine neue Drahtbürste sponsern. Dieses 3-Haare-Ding geht ja gar nicht ! Viele Grüße an Dich !

What class of knife is it ? It looks like a cane knife or a machete style. Nice restoration job. I like the handle wood. Have you ever tried stabilizing the wood handles ? A neat process eliminating the use of flammable raw or boiled linseed oil.
