thanks for teaching us Billy Ray, some things i learned putting an axe head on. I sand blasted the rust off then i sharpened it before I installed the new handle big mistake for sure the head slipped out of my hand hit my pointer finger on the first knuckle it sliced it to the bone took A trip to med center and received 4 stiches. my advice would be after sharpening put tape on the cutting edge. axe turned out awesome A true temper Kelly perfect 32 double bit axe.

what a gift; that axe is a work of art; I like the old patina; that axe is a beauty; oxheads are cutting axes; you can put a wicked edge on that blade; I have a poleaxe that you would love; we always cut our wood flush with a hacksaw at the head; then wrapped the shoulders with wire; I use to turn the grindstone for my father and after a while when he beared down on the blade it felt as if your shoulder was coming off; I don/t miss that grindstone

I love seeing all the axes come to life. but especially that one since I have what I think is that exact same head that I'm currently working on getting on a handle. most of the insignia is gone because it was used and abused (as it should be) before it ended up in my hands, but what little there is matches and the shape of it is so distinctive. great video, and I'll try and send ya a picture of the final product when mine gets put together.

OCHSENKOPF(head of ox) is a premier manufacturer of axes and hammers originated in Remsheid Germany.It is a branch of the biggest hand tool manufacturer of Germany named GEDORE.Created 100 years ago from 3 brothers with the surname Dowidat.The company's name is a mixture of GEbruder (brothers)DOwidat(Dowidat)REmsheid(the name of the city that the base of the company and it's biggest instalations are.Just for historical reasons.Old DOWIDAT spanners from 1965-1980 and the ones made by the VBW brand name on the same age are together with the pre 2000 SNAP-ON spanners the best ever manufactured.

It looks like a “Swampers” axe to me, but that’s from the viewer prospective not yours. My great grandfather was a Swamper in Humboldt Co. CA. And Southern Oregon. Those are the guys that limbed trees, cleaned up stumps, and prepared each tree before it was taken to the mill. Real dangerous work being a Swamper.

Happy birthday, Bill! That's a beaut of an ax, you've got some nice ones on the channel, my problem is that I'd get a nice one like that and could never bring myself to use it! That would be on the wall as a monument. I use an ax for stripping branches, and they get beat up. That one would be like logging off the grid with a brand new truck, there would be a lot of going wide to avoid scratches. LOL. Nice work and all the best to you !

What are you putting on the handle? Boiled linseed oil??
@johnclarke66476 жыл бұрын
I had to hang a new handle in my 50 year old True Temper Swedish double bit axe this weekend. Their heads have integral spline in them that keep the handle from twisting in the head. It also makes it almost i,impossible to remove the head for proper fitting onto the handle. I got it down onto the shoulder with a nice little line of curls after fitting the wedge in the handle. I removed them with my small wood 3/8" chisel. I will sharpen it, later. That head is not ,moving on that handle. I set a tight head. I very seldom get over 2/3rds of the wood wedge in the handle and cut it off flush with the end of the handle, which I try to set flush with the top edge of the hosel.
