I love how when you saw him struggling with the spokeshave, you got this twinkle in your eye and I could SEE it.. you had a look "I get to teach Victor something today" Then you took the tool and showed him exactly how you do it. I guarantee he learned a couple things. I usually do when I watch you. That's the thing I appreciate about you most. You love to teach. Thank you.

Buckin, I’ve watched you for more than 10yrs. Always good info. For the last 50 +yrs I have mixed a 50/50 mix of linseed oil and paint thinner in a pint jar and painted (slopped, until it runs off) as much onto all of my wooden handles used or not, as possible yearly, it extends the useful life of the implement handle. I keep them under cover. The paint thinner thins the linseed oil and allows much penetration, the paint thinner will evaporate leaving the linseed oil to harden keeping the moisture out. I even paint the implement head, which keeps it from rusting. Keep up the excellent work.

I don't use an ax as much as I used to. Age got me. But lots of folks around here and myself would wrap a thick layer of cowhide around the handle where it meets the head. Had a guy do mine. He put one layer around the bottom, like saddle. Then another all the way up the sides and laced it with a leather thong. He soaked it in varnish to protect the leather and let it dry. It was light and it worked!! Never broke a handle again.

A little tip I'm sure you already know. Put the axe or the handle on a sheet of food wraping film that is twice as long as tha axe and then some. Soke it in linseed oil (or other oil), wrap it tightly and let it sit for a day. If all the oil is sucked up add some more an waite another day. Repeate until it doesn't suck up more oil. Wipe dry and start using

I appreciate the old skills you have. I like that you are teaching a different generation. One thing I did miss was, where the heck is the dang still? Is 'wadka' the same as pine tar pitch? Thanks. Your video was entertaining. But there has to be a still around someplace.
@davidburns50244 жыл бұрын
I think wadka is Watco oil. You see a can at 21:00, and Billy Ray talks about how the resins can fill gaps and such.
@davidcullen67975 жыл бұрын
Pretty nice restoration there, my friend. I was wondering if since you mentioned that the company used linseed oil in the build process if that might not be a better ticket than Watco (generically called Danish oil)? Danish oil does have varnishes and resins in it, so those will fill the pores and fine cracks in the wood and prevent complete absorption of any future oiling you might want to do. Danish oil is a hard drying oil, meaning it can polymerize into a solid form when it reacts with oxygen in the atmosphere. That's not so good for creating a re-oilable surface. I use 50/50 linseed oil/turpentine for a lot of wood restoration projects.....including as a "wood food" on scraped-bare wood-sided houses before I paint them. The 50/50 lets the oil get deep into the wood and it also prevents the issues with linseed never seeming to dry. Don't use linseed full strength; your hands will stick to the handle for months. To really get the wood fed, you could drop the handle end into a PVC tube whose end is capped and let it sit in a 50/50 mix for a few days. Then, you won't be just filling the cracks with varnish, you will actually cause the wood to swell and close up the cracks. You can always stain the wood later after the linseed dries to the touch if you want a rustic look. If you don't have PVC you can use a large metal pan with enough mix to cover the handle (and with a pan you can even leave the head on and get everything soaked!). Linseed oil migrates into wood deeply as opposed to Danish which soaks in a bit before that polymerization takes place.
@ToastedBread124 жыл бұрын
David Cullen i use boiled linseed oil pure and never had a problem dries fine and quick, don't use normal linseed oil, just a tip maybe :) have a nice day

Hey Billy I love your channel bud keep it up. I’m a tree guy from Oakland County Michigan. I have a brother in arms that I served with in a combat infantry company during operation Iraqi freedom about a decade ago. He’s also a tree guy out of Vermont. We both are company owners who share the passion of tree work. We both make the long 15 hour trip from state to state to reunite to do tree work and learn from each other. Our brotherhood was forged in the fire of combat and our passion for tree work is one I know you understand. All that being said We are due to go out to his neck of the woods this November and I think it would be great if I could perches one of your beautiful axes for him. Maybe get one for myself as well. Just because I couldn’t let him out due me lol. How would I go about making this a reality? Thanks a bunch and stay safe bud.
