I did the same experiments with friction welding on a lathe when started working as a lathe machinist. The first thing I did I welded a 16mm steel rod to the MT2 taper. I was so happy then.

This technology was actually patented by Caterpillar Tractor Company back in the '70's and they sold a line of machines that would perform this task. Of course, their patents have long since expired.

That’s wild. My shop had a trailer dolly that ran low on gear oil and melted the axle nut and fucked up the hub. We had the axle doctor come out for 1 hub and it took him 6 hours to do something a machine did in less than 2 minutes that’s insane

Friction welding live axle casings is nothing new - the British were doing it in the 1960s (unless I'm mistaken).

Remember being part of the welding maintenance crew ( an apprentice ) in 1962/3 Rubery Owen (Darlaston) Ltd , when this was being done . Very effective and the Lab did the very same section tests to confirm joint integrity.

actually it's skookum fast way of welding, but friction (with some metals) can change the characteristics of brittleness and sudden impaction curves, however still can be used with some metals together but still not successful when we tried with some metals else...

It’s a fast and even weld I guess. Twice the work and twice as fast as a traditional welder putting his rod to the metal. Not a welder myself, but this seems pretty efficient. I just wonder how well it holds together over time.

Friction welding is generally extremely strong as it bonds across the whole surface of the joint and not just the edges. It’s generally used on most hydraulic cylinders to attach the eye to the end of the rod and they put out tens of thousands of pounds of force.

the older Mack trucks had a pressed in tube that fit into a bore in the housing. they could be pulled out by a press and push in another tube in. then Mack changed the metallurgy of the housings and they were heat installed. the new ones now are cut out with a boring tool by a specific company and the tubes are installed by heating the housing and sliding new one in then gradually letting it cool back down then welded into place (thru a hole in housing cut before installing). lot of labor but cheaper than new housing.Mack does not condone this method (would rather sell housing).

I'm not a welder, I just like watching things like welding, lathe work, CNCs, and etc on KZbin. But looking at the cross-section cutaway at 2:51 isn't that sort of a crappy weld? It just looks that way to me, I could obviously be wrong.

I see zero inclusions or voids. I see 100 percent penetration. Looks like perfect fusion once trimmed. No gas or filler needed. That machine is only suited for major production though. How much does that thing cost?

Ah okay, thanks for your input. I guess I expected to see more of a region that looks "blended" or something, not sure how to describe it. Whereas in the cross-section here, it's like a clear line where the two pieces are joined. But like I said, I'm not a welder so I'm always learning something from these various vids :)

Asep Saepudin an oxide layer can’t form at the point of fusion because there is no space for it to happen. The flashing that extrudes from the joint acts as a flux layer until the weld cools and then it is sheared off.
