Front man for one of the greatest southern rock/roll bands that ever took the stage. Still have the double black Fillmore album...We played the righteous crap out of that in our stereo component room at work way back in the day...Just an amazing group of musicians.

The Fillmore East album was a lifechanger for me. What a vibe. That voice and Hammond B3 touched my soul as a kid. Today I'm a multi-instrumentalist-- keys & guitar-- vocals, too. No matter what song we're performing I'll often sneak in a Gregg or Duane lick here & there-- drawing from my childhood inspiration and education. RIP.

I saw Greg, with Duane in 1971 just a few months before Duane's accident. Have also played harp 46 year and was full-time pro by age 20, have played with players who have played with ABB, pertly by growing up literally on "Highway 41" near where Dickie B lived. For singers, love Duane and would not vote for a "competition" but for white MALE blues singers Tom Jones, Paul Butterfield I also like. There are many females who can hold their own....Bonnie Raitt, etc.

@@gabrieln3613 That's true, he was very good at the B3, but he was equally adept at guitar. The guitar was his first instrument and he gave Duane lessons on guitar early on. It was Duane who told Gregg he had to play the B3 in the ABB.

It's totally amazing to realize that Gregg was only 23 years old when the Fillmore East album was released. For me it's not only the finest live album, but the finest album period, ever released. I have listened to Stormy Monday a few times a week continuously for over fifty years. It still blows my mind. Gregg's anguished vocals and jazzy B-3, and Duane's totally amazing guitar work. At the end of the song, Berry Oakley says "That was brother Gregg Allman singing the blues, and Duane and Dickey and Ace." (Ace being harmonica player Thom Doucette.) It took me about forty years to figure out what was being said, and I'm positive about it.

I met Greg Allman at a bar I was working at in the 90s. I worked nights, but I had to come in during the day once a week to pick up my paycheque. I come in one day, and there's Greg Allman at the bar drinking. There was a girl who worked during the day he liked. He was a mess but friendly. I love music, and I spoke to him about music every week when I would come in. I love the Blues and even lent him a Robert Johnson album. He might have been a mess but he loved talking about music. I love his house. The hardwood floors are lovely, as are the doors with glass. I live in New Orleans, and most doors are like that.

Saw Gregg and Allman Brothers Band perform two different times/places in Jacksonville - once in 1984 at a place just off the Arlington Expressway and then again in 1989 at Pappa’s on Blanding Blvd. He arrived late to each and then played incredibly - a true, true talent. I see a few, very few. But as they are young its hard to see where their talents will take them. Speaking of Derek Trucks, Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars. There may be others but not that I know of. All very different, but no denying their talents. I think people often hear music while busy doing other things, but it is something all together different to listen to a piece of music. And I mean really listen to each instrument and how it adds to the whole piece. I am not a musician, but have often been told I have a good ear. I'll accept and "listen to that." (I actually have 2 ears but that is the phrase normally used: a good ear).

I grew up Sarasota, huge well-known family there, saw the full ABB with Duane in '71 at Robards's Sports Arena. Also, Tom Doucette (maybe this is you?) I saw when I starting playing harp in 1974 (I moved west 3 years later and became full-time pro) at the Village Piazza in Siesta Key Village, right when it burned down. I also played some gigs (one was live on radio at the Ford dealership where 41 & 301 split) with the "Poindexters" the family band that is on Dickie's (my family is freinds with Dickie) first solo album "Highway Call". And, yes on the $15-20, even a few years later when I was old enough to find out. The ABB's because of Dickie's mom in Bradenton I imagine mostly, where just part of the culture in that area......they could show up at a party and jam, along with so many other cool musician. Oh, I also used to play with David Altice & Chris Anderson when they had the "Southern Express Band", we were high school friends at Riverview.
