I went to the Tilburg concert this year. There was a very long line waiting outside. Damian came outside and walked the entire line and greeted us, we shook hands, awsome guy. That venue has the best audio that I have ever heard live. Arjen's wife was the one who mixed the FOH.

I was in that same line and was not expecting Damian. When he appeared in the corner of my eye the only thing I could produce was a very surprised "Heee" . He saw the connection and turned around to look me in the eyes. It was a great moment, but what do you say instantly to such a meastro? So I just said "looking forward to the show". He smiled and gave me a thumbs up. The fact is: the guy was testing the waters and was getting himself in the right mood, enjoying the moment. I guess the waiting line was a mile long, but not a complaint to be heard. Everyone was excited in a positive way. That's what I like about metal concerts. The vibe, the atmosphere is so positive.

we were almost too late, so when we arrived the line was gone. but with the help of a very nice man we managed to enter from a side door all the way in the front. we stood in the second row.on the right. Missed Damian though but luckily not the concert

Really glad you did another Arjen composition. I love Damian's voice. I heard an interview from Arjen saying that when he heard Damian's voice, he offered him any part on 'The Electric Castle' album that he wanted - Damian chose the knight and they have worked together ever since.

Indeed, Damian is a great vocalist, besides not an easy melody line, but he also manages here to capture the essence of the song, the role he plays, he pulls you into the story. By the way, in January there will be a release of an album by Damian Wilson and Adam Wakeman (son of Rick).

Ohhh, Damian Wilson at his best. What a fantastic performance! Truly awesome! By the way, Damian is the new singer of the prog-rock group Arena. Their latest record is very good and definitely worth a try...

Since I've heard Damian for the first time, I've been in love with his voice. His story telling is so captivated. Also his family tour what are mellow songs, together with his brothers, is so entertaining. The stories, the voices... Heaven

A minor correction. This is not 2017. I was there in 2017. This song was not played. This is 2019, The Electric Castle Live And Other Tales album.

Damian is singing his singing his guts out in this amazing song. This is what passion for a song and music is all about. Sometimes everything comes together in a moment on stage. This was such a moment. Love it.

Yes, Damien Wilson (Headspace), he is awesome in this. "Murders row of musicians" . Nice! Pretty apt description. 👍. Sir Joost van den Broek on keys, he is essential, there is no live show without him, he does a lot of work putting them together. This performance was the 2019 "Electric Castle Live and Other Tales" concert, the one narrated by John Delancie. I can see where the description in that video post can be a bit misleading, it was saying this is the same venue as the 2017 show.

Funny thing is (to me, at least): Damian is so awesome in any Ayreon/Guilt Machine/Star One?.... composition, but outside Arjen's projects he doesn't really stand out. So kudos to Arjen for lifting Damian to such a heighth that it stands out! And did you notice the solo guitarist? He has been replaced for the Universe concert. When Arjen is confronted with any artist showing ego, he doesn't work with that artist again. And Marcel (the fatter guitarist from Universe) also played in the 2023 concert. About the interview: just message him again and explain the situation. I'm absolutely sure (120%) that he'd be more than happy to do the interview again.

Concerning Damian solo project. I agree at some point, he fits so well in ayreon roles. Like he is born for it. ❤ But solo he tells the story about the songs and he is sooo good in telling a story, an evening with Damian is absolutely worth going. 😊

All that's been said below (and possibly above this) about Damian, I concur. I listened while you reacted to it (proving why you're the best), my brain don't work the way yours does, all I know is I love this and play it at least once a day. I'm sure you know, but just in case, this is the other tales from Electric Castle and other tales, I have the CD, DVD box set, and watch the whole thing 2 or 3 times a week, you mentioned the guy with his fists, but there's so much emotion in other tracks, the tears during The Valley of the Queen's, I just wish he would tour and bring this to the world, I know the logistics would be a nightmare, but I live in hope. Anyway I'm so glad you enjoyed it.

Hi, Eric. I fully agree with you that Tuomas and Arjen are the greatest symfonic progrock composers on this planet. When I go to a classic concert hall all the names of the great composers from the past are written in stone on the walls. The Beethovens, Mozarts, Brahms, you name them. They are honoured more or less eternally. People still listen to their compositions. But epic compositions are being made in our days as well. My question is, how do we give these guys that same honour? They deserve it. Preferrably during their lifetime.... I feel like carving out "Arjen" in the pillars of the National Concert Hall in Amsterdam myself. But I guess the only result will be ending up in jail 😂.
@TheWyldesidewithEricClark

I would argue, that in their time, those composers were only exposed to those who could afford to own/observe music performances. Those pieces didn't become Mass Known until many years after them. There were more people during Mozart's time who never heard of him or his music than knew who he was. The one exception I would put in there would be Tchaikovsky, who was a National composer, but only Russians knew who he was. There were no Kasey Casems or Rick Dees during their time to put them in a Top 40. Also, being used in schools to teach musicians also helped to spread those pieces of art. But that's just my opinion, I claim no authority over this topic. Cheers, Eric

Thanks for giving me the insights of your thoughts on this topic! I still feel a kind of repetition in history. In the old days, as you stated correctly, music was for those who could afford to listen to this kind of music. The majority of people never knew. Nowadays when you mention the name Arjen Lucassen or Ayreon, or even Nightwish or Tuomas on the average birthday party, you get blank stares. No one knows. The technique is available to give almost all the people on this planet access to all sorts of music. And still the majority of people choose to concentrate on easy to swallow mainstream let's call it music. It makes me sad. And I have the feeling I should do something in return to those great artists that make my life so much more enjoyable. Just buying their products just does not seem to be enough in return. So I spread the gospel as much as I can. In that respect you are doing a fantastic job by educating the viewers in the epicness we are experiencing! A big thumps up 🤘👍👍👍🤘

Love Damien Wilson's voice. He was great in the prog band Threshold, he sang on my favorite album of 2012, Headspace - I Am Anonymous, and he also has a project with Within Temptation's guitarist where they play acoustic versions of Iron Maiden tunes.

This song gets better every time I listen to it . Friggin Epic !! Thank you for doing this . And thank you to I think Peter for suggestion . Best of the best for sure is Lucassen and Holopainen !!! You did three videos today Eric , Aryeon - Jelusick and Nightwish .... those are 3 reasons I stopped listening to american/Local Radio 20 years ago and why I still make cds to listen to . Sirius XM needs to add a symphonic/european metal statioj . Thanks for making my day better Eric , I really needed those videos and breakdowns today .

This song is one of the "...other tales" from this gig. It's a song from another project named "Guilt Machine", composed by Arjen, the lyrics are from his wife. Both suffer from depressions, so they made an album about. Imho this song describes depressions perfectly.

Been to all of the Ayreon concerts in Holland and it’s always so absolutely incredible - there are no words to describe those live performances. I’ve loved Damian’s vocals for so many years, as well as Arjen‘s compositional ability, not to mention his ability to play guitar, bass and keys. Was fortunate enough to meet Arjen, and Damian, in Paris, separately. Both guys are stellar. Also, love your cat. Good for you to admit that you screwed the pooch with Arjen.

Such a great performance! Thanks for your extensive reaction. I couldn’t agree more on what you said. These last 12 months I saw Nightwish Human Nature show, Floor Jansen solo show, Rammstein Stadium Tour and last but not least Ayreon Live Beneath The Waves show in Tilburg. This was a musical year I will never forget. And thanks to your insightful reactions I learned things about these shows I hadn’t notice. The Ayreon show had a very international but homey atmosphere due to the fact that we were all Ayreonauts doing what we love best: enjoy the incredible live show in a small venue where nobody has an ego!

@vmaxbabe Your list almost matches mine except for Rammstein (not my cup of tea). Instead my list also shows a second Nightwish concert, Sabaton, Iron Maiden, Blind Guardian and last but not least Damian Wilson solo. Among other songs from his musical career he did The Druids turned to stone and Into the black hole from Ayreon. Awesome performances! During guitar solos he jumped off the stage to stand among fans and watch the band play, dance with a random lady or run up to the small balcony to greet fans up there to then rush back for the next verse.

Interesting fact, this was created by Lucassen for a side project of his called Guilt Machine that was specifically created for a few things: 1. he wanted to work with Belgian singer Jasper Steeverlinck, 2. his partner had written a set of lyrics he wanted to set to music and 3. he wanted to work with Chris Maitland (Porcupine Tree's first drummer). But ... Damian Wilson did incredible by making this song his.

Well, they weren't tricksters and they played more than 1 team regularly. Babe Ruth, Earle Combs, Lou Gehrig, Tony Lazzeri, Pat Collins, and a few others. Their statistical averages are crazy and no line up has ever come close to being that dominating. Globetrotters throw confetti on people before pantsing the ref. A little different.
