When Mary says "same as always... family" to Dean's question of where this leaves them, Dean looks down and to his left. To Sam. To his family. He wants Mary to be a mother when she is biologically younger than him and has lived far less than he has. She’s only had, at max, 6 months to deal with that at this point, she’s still adjusting, so maybe Dean should be more sympathetic to her and try to understand her instead to judging her for making the exact choices he and Sam have made. "How about for once you just try and be a mom?!" Mary is the most selfish character in the show. She should have never come back. She did nothing but being trouble.

I literally just saw the episode for this a couple days ago and I'm still in shock. I knew at some point everything would be revealed but my heart wasn't prepared for it. The betrayal of Mary... and the worst thing was seeing how heartbroken the boys are. Dean thought their mom had maybe been hiding something but Sam didn't really suspect anything so it was an even bigger shock for him, especially since the British Men of Letters tortured Sammy so horrifically. The bits which really get me are when Dean says "I never was" and when he says the word "Mary" because you know at that point that the hurt and betrayal cuts so deep - he would never ever talk to his mom like that unless he was not just hurt, but heartbroken. And you can tell Sammy is hurt when even he says for his mom to leave at the end - he shows solidarity with Dean. It is interesting how Sammy is just really struggling to process everything at first whereas Dean is struggling but also then takes the lead as the older brother and sticks up for the both of them. He really tells everyone how he is feeling and how he just wants a mom again - the thing is, Sam doesn't remember his mom from childhood whereas Dean does and so to be let down after loving her so much as a child, and throughout life, is even worse. However, don't get me wrong, considering how Mary died in the first episode, I do have a lot of sympathy for her wanting to make sure no-one else has to suffer like that - it does make sense why she would team up with the British Men of Letters... but to team up with them even after the torture and without telling them was pretty bad. Granted, she would never team up with the same person who tortured Sammy but still... in all that time that she was working with them, she could have been catching up with Sam and Dean's life rather than spending time with strangers. The amount of times that Sam and Dean have dreamt of getting their mother back... I doubt they would have thought it would go like this! Also, on another note, Mary is lucky that Cass didn't die because there is no coming back from that! And now I've just written an essay, haha. All of that aside, kudos to Jensen, Jared and Samantha for executing this scene so well!

Mary: I'm doing this for you... I'm playing 3 decades of catch up here!! Dean: And we're not? How do you think this has been for us? We're you're son's, and you've been gone... Our WHOLE lives, you've been gone... Too powerful of a scene, a grown son who never got the chance to be a kid and live a normal human life FINALLY letting go of how he felt having to raise his baby brother, protect him and provide for him practically by himself. Truly cuts deep. Sam love's his big brother very much

Mary never wanted this life for her sons but now is actively choosing the life to cope. And using her sons emotionally to secure her emotional starvation and lack of connection. Gee... Why does this sound familiar? Oh yeah, my mom and I had a Dean and Mary like conversation like this in the car this week. And like Dean, I felt betrayed.

The fact that as a mother, she would even so much as associate herself with people who did the things that the British Men Of Letters did to her sons, and then act as though she has to right to talk down the them (notice the condescending tone, specifically towards Sam for some reason) and be angry because they feel hurt by this sudden revelation that their mother is fraternizing with their enemies, fills me with rage. And then to say that she is a mother but not just a mom, makes me so upset because every devoted and loving mother I know would agree that before anything else, come their kids and their role as a mother in those children’s lives. Maybe she never got to watch her kids grow up nor did she get the chance to form a proper bond, but that’s her own fault. Everything Dean said here was right, and he makes the proper point simply by saying that heartbreaking line “I never was” in response to her “You are not a child” showcases just how *well* she knows them. I’m currently still trekking through the show and trying to find the time and energy to finish it, and I have not reached this season yet, but with some spoilers and this clip in hand, I’m am so angry at this woman that it’s borderline ridiculous. I’ve only ever been this angry at a TV show character one time in the past and that was Ruby.

0:13 Sam's face changed in confusion. He couldn't even believe what she said. Dean was right to be angry at Mary from the start. He probably wasn't really surprised. But Sam gave her time and space to adjust without judging. It must hurt him so much.

to me, what solidifes their hurt the most in this clip is how sam didn't hold dean back when he was talking. normally sam is the softer, rational and gentler one, but he never told dean to tone it down or told him he was taking it too far when we all know he normally would. i feel so bad for these two, but especially dean. this clip is just heart wrenching.

I love this scene soooo much. The subtle ways the boys brace themselves and how Sam falls silent and twists closer to Dean while Dean focuses in on the problem. The delivery and heartache Dean shows while still being strong shows that he was always a soldier, never a child. The way Sam just looks more and more heartbroken and looking over at Dean for guidance. It shows that against everything, "family" included, the boys have truly only had each other. It hurts me that Sam probably grew up hearing the few great memories Dean had of Mary and this is what they get when she's back. You know it's a terrible situation when Dean willingly walks away from food and Sam tries to make himself look smaller.
