I don't know if anyone else has suggested this or not. The best money ever spent was a generator, but more importantly, a Generac Generator that's permanently connected to your, just like your home AC. The most common used in my neighborhood run on natural gas, comes on automatically if the power goes off. Great investment for your family and your home value. THANK GOD everyone is OK!!

Yup, I have a Generac and when a tornado hit and everyone was out of power for 2 days (this was a few months ago in TN) we had power and internet. About the same price as a new AC unit and you may not use it but once or twice a year but def worth it when it's dead of summer or dead of winter. I have natural gas going to my house so it was an easy set up.

I went with a Briggs & Stratton. I have a 500 gallon propane tank to run it. Power goes out around here, no problem. I live in the country where it is probably the last place to get power when it goes out. Best money I ever spent.

The best money I ever spent was on a whole home generator and a 500 gallon propane tank when I had my home built a few years ago. I went with a Briggs & Stratton 20kw. The electrician recommended it over Generac. Either is better than no power and the headache that comes with it. It is more than enough to power our size home. About $10k for the generator and install with the transfer switch. Maybe a couple thousand for the propane tank. It’s well worth it!

Put in a whole house generator when I bought the house 4 years ago. Had it about a month and we had a short 45 minute outage; that was worth the cost. About 2 years ago 4 hour outage in miserable hot humid weather. My neighbors were in the dark and hot; I was watching tv. The unit is officially worth the money. I will never be without one

I keep a person I worked with in Annapolis MD during a Snow storm, his entire neighborhood was without power. People who owned generators . If it stopped running when out of gas, if they weren't actually refilling it, it got stolen.

In today’s world..if you have the means…have a backup generator at all times. I have two. Have water, food, and fuel in storage as well. It’s worth it. We had a very small tornado come through a few months ago and locally had power out for a week. Many local gas stations were closed, but we had gas at home so no problem.

We ducked a major blow from Hurricane Helene down here in SWFL, flooding was the major problem down here for homes and businesses near canals and rivers. @21:00 Those ambulances driving together are likely an ambulance task force. During declared emergencies like hurricanes, Emergency Management agencies get requests to evacuate hospitals, nursing homes, etc. and your local emergency services send police, ambulances, fire trucks, power linemen or whatever crews are needed to the requested areas.

Hey man I moved to laurens about 3 years years near ware shoals got a little spot on boyds millpond near Lake rabon. I've been trucking 6 years almost entirely otr dry van. Worked for Quickway in Simpsonville for a little bit. Feel free to hmu sometime since we're kinda neighbors and do the same thing. I've mostly been company driver a few lease purchase attempts, then during the covid trucking rates came and I got a 1099 gig with a company in Illinois for 80 cpm which afforded me my first house! 41 years dying without power but I did get lucky and started doing lyft just a week and a half ago so at least I'm not bored right now. Last trucking company was AW Transport they called 3 weeks ago and said they were going out of business so figured I'd try something new.

Dam glad you guy's are ok. It's always good to have a geill eoth burner's thst u can cook pot's and pan's on. I got one after I moved in with Jessie and the kids. She was happy cooking and grilling when we had a bad ice storm. I had a portable generator running to keep the fridge running and also tue tv and kid's charge there cell's. There's wall mounted gas heater's. And thry keep the whole house warm. Jessie brought food that's ready to eat just asd water and butter and cook. If we are grilling on the grill she will use tue burners to cook stuff. She was like this is good since i don't have to run in and out all the time. Last time it looked like thst here was like sheesh year's ago and I had tue kid's take tue limbs to the chipper and i was cutting branches down and neighbor's would hand me cup's of hot chocolate. Cause I was wearing a heavy hoodie. Thick jacket's are bit easy to wear doing stuff like that. Tue electric company was happy seeing me cut down trees and i also had worker's come and help me. In fact Jessie xooked on the grill tonight steak's and corn on the cob and salad. Kid's had practice and a few of them was mowing yard's.

Glad you guy's are ok. And hopefully your family members also including friend's. It's always best to have generator's. We have a small one that we use for the window mounted air conditioner if the weather is bad and it's hot. We have several gas mounted wall heater's and they work excellent if power goes out when the weather is bad mostly due to ice or poles gets knocked down. We will have a service truck here. And it will power part's of the stuff inside. My grandma was watching News reports about the weather u guy's had there and other places that was hit bad. Driver's made it to Florida dropping off the trailer's for supplies (Not our trailer's) and they are going to be heading to different locations and pick up trailer's. They sent us video's often near the bad area's and it was bad.

Having a permanent backup generator is best, but can direct wire a portable generator to your service box using a generator power inlet box and a generator interlock kit. If your portable generator is big enough may power everything in your house, especially if you have a soft start installed on your air conditioner. Best thing about it is no more extension cords.

Justin, you need to focus a little bit more on preparedness with the way the world is going. Make sure when you are done using that generator that you run the carb dry and store it in a clean dry place. I have seen so many used generators not run the second time people go to use them because they were not stored properly after the first use. You also need to check them occasionally and test run them at least twice a year. If you can't do that than the whole house automatic generator is the best option.

Make sure if you back feed the electric panel, turn off the main street feed. Otherwise you can electrocute the linemen thru the transformer stepping the power back up.

I bought a generator once during an emergency. Well,once the emergency was over,I put the generator back in the shed and forgot about it. About a year later I got the generator out too use it and it wouldn’t start. That’s when I learned about ethanol gas. The ethanol gas ruined my 600 dollar generator that I used once. Ethanol ruined the gas tank,ruined the carburetor.And the gas line. I took and had it rebuilt but it wasn’t the same. And it was expensive. When you store your generator,drain the gas from the tank and carburetor. Let it run til it stops. Most importantly,after it’s empty,go buy a bottle of stabil ethanol stabilizer.It’s at Walmart or auto zone.pour it in the tank and make sure it gets in the carburetor,as it holds a little gas.

Absolute truth. If possible NEVER use ethanol gas in small engines. If you have to as soon as you are done get all of it out of it and let it air dry out. Fog the tank with some WD40 if you can even. If you can use non ethanol fuel then you can put a fuel stabilizer in it and keep the tank full (don't keep it in an attached garage) and just shut off the fuel to the engine and run it until it stops and the engine is out of gas.
