Nice build. I also did one, and have a couple KZbin videos about it. Like you, I added a sound card. A few comments: - That RESET decal is a sneaky trick on the part of Moebius. They could not get, or did not want to pay for, permission to use the NIKKOR lens name, so their lens decal just says NIKKO. The RESET decal, which makes no sense for the kit, is there so the model maker can 'borrow' the 'R" to add to the end of NIKKO to get NIKKOR. - You had LED problems because you did not realize that the included electronics include a resistor under the shrink tubing on one of the power switch terminals. That resistor is there to limit the current to the LED so it does not burn out over time. Without the resistor, the LED will run too hot, and will fail before long. - Your replacement LED is an undiffused type, so its brightness is all out the front, and it looks too glaring. The original LED, and it is a diffused type, so will give a more authentic look. With its intended resistor, it should last indefinitely. - The USB power adapter uses a 3-terminal voltage regulator, but is not the most efficient way to drop the 9V to the 4.5V needed by the sound card. It was not clear to me how you ended up wiring your circuit, but if you still had the hidden resistor that is part of the power switch assembly, the resulting voltages might be far from optimal. - When setting the two lenses, I used a ring made from a strip of paper, cut from the adhesive part of a Post-It note, adhesive side out, around my finger to make it slightly sticky, and then touched the lens to pick it up.

I'm about to order and build this relatively expensive model myself. It's going into our rear home foyer were we have one of our ten (yeah, 10) Alexa Echo access points. I'm not doing anything special with a sound board. But I am going to have it flush mounted right next to the wall near the Alexa Echo module with the Echo speaker output routed thru the wall to the HAL panel so no wires will show. The LED will be powered all the time with a concealed adapter. I'm reseting the temptation to take it too far by changing out the red LED for the blue glowing eye that SAL uses in the 2010 sequel movie and graphically modifying the decal to say SAL 9000. I prefer the more sinister red LED. That way, at night, looking into the dark foyer just inside our all glass pane back door seeing the steady, patient, quietly superior, possibly dangerous, red AI eye standing guard seems completely cool. I need to take notes during your video to get the colors and texture of the paint right. Thanks for sharing this.

Hey Lou, great build! I heard you mention that you didn't think that sound board company was around any more... I found a company called Adafruit that makes a little sound device that you can put up to 10 different sounds on. It wires up exactly like the board in your video. It's called the Sound FX board. It's very small and runs on 3 - 5VDC. And it's great because there are many amp/speaker combos you can pair with it that are also available on Adafruit. I us one in my 1:1 Proton Pack and it works great! Cheers!

I was cracking up when I saw you were going to tackle this "kit" and yes, it's pricey. I'm dumb enough to want a second to make the SAL 9000 as well, but I'm in no rush. Have to hear it sing Daisy! Thanks for another great vid, I knew you'd add your own extras and special touch to this one!

There is trick to getting sharper lines when masking and preventing any paint from the second color bleeding under the tape edge onto the first color. (Model railroaders painting passenger cars somebody use this trick.) After masking, spray the same color that you masked over along the tape edge. This seals the edge. If any color gets under the edge of the tape, it won't show because it is the same color tht is under the tape. Then spray the second color. It can't bleed under the tape since the tape edge is now sealed.

Hi Lou, Something that is being missed by many, the "reset" decal was actually included so that you may use the "R" for the "Nikkor" decal. You will notice that the Nikkor decal on the lens really says "Nikko". This is for copyright/royalty purposes, and they compensated by including the "reset" for you. Might consider adding the "R" if its not too late?

Good build. I notice considering what is included in the box the kit is pretty pricey. I would use a thin layer of pritt-stick to adhere the eye done. That way it will hold it and enable removal anytime because it will never dry complete. Cheers.

I just built this kit as well. I didn't do anything fancy with it. Pretty much just built it out of the box. My local hobby shop is selling it for $46 which is ridiculous. Been there a few times since I bought mine and the other Hal kits aren't exactly flying off the shelf. I had to really think about whether to get it myself with that price. It is a nice kit though and turns out looking really nice.

Very satisfying to see! A great start to the new year. Couldn't agree more about that "desperate money grab" line. One supposes this is the last item to be made a model and it's time to squeeze the true fans. Seems to me, if it had been half, I would've bought two. Or three. Turns out there are motion-detector activated sound modules-- but the few I looked at only did one long, way-too-loud sound. But I didn't look for anything else-- a random firing one may be out there. I still really get a kick with the ability to put those non-intended-to-be hilarious HAL quotes out there at any time. HAL and Siri-- now that would be a good show, just the two of them sitting there. The only nervous-twitch inducing moment was you putting that LED in circuit with the power board... it sure seems like it will burn out the LED soon. Not sure, it looked okay. Usually one can see the LED being way too bright. I'd put a volt meter on it and see if it's more than about 2V stick a 100 Ohm resistor on it. But if it's working; leave it alone. I have found that 9V batteries stick to magnets! There's an office accessory line of ridiculously thin high-powered magnets that seem no thicker than several sheets of paper. It looks like someone went through the magnet factory with a paper punch. I had to buy an entire set of metal board and pack o' mags to get those mags, but time has passed and they may be otherwise available. They measure .040"! One odd thought-- i keep seeing a real glow around HAL's inner eye. It's either something to do with the actual lens used or it's an overexposure. But-- I was wondering if you'd considered painting a dusky dark-ish red around that LED, right on the black?
@aztekdummy
@aztekdummy 4 жыл бұрын
he red led has a resistor on it, so no worries. The irony is that the salvaged USB power inverter also has a red LED on it's circuit to show that it is "on" If i was any good at resoldering, I could have just replaced that one with a bigger 5 mm red bulb and run that to the lens.

@@aztekdummy A hall effect sensor is momentary if you place a magnet in proximity and then remove it. A touch sensor is another option. I think a bluetooth or an IOT option is even better. With IOT you could even use your phone to control it. I don't think these options are all that difficult, but it all depends on how far one is willing to go. www.ebay.com/itm/Bluetooth-Audio-Receiver-Decoder-Board-with-USB-TF-card-Slot-Decoding-Playback-P/133225644903?_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20160908105057%26meid%3D221dfae6c75f4caaa753796b59647a77%26pid%3D100675%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D15%26sd%3D133225644903%26itm%3D133225644903%26pmt%3D1%26noa%3D1%26pg%3D2380057&_trksid=p2380057.c100675.m4236&_trkparms=pageci%3Ae2beaf28-2f2e-11ea-9404-74dbd180ac07%7Cparentrq%3A72325c5016f0ada61bb47ad5ff8589e4%7Ciid%3A1

Some thoughts on the sound. You can probably capture the sounds you want from the DVD (if you have it). Also, the electromagical incantation you want to address that puny volume problem is... LM386 It's a basic linear amplifier chip, only eight pins and no programming. You just add a few components and put it between the "sound card" and the speaker. Find the datasheet online, it will have sample circuits you can build easily- just gather the parts, solder them together "dead bug" style and encapsulate in hot glue once you have it going, don't even need a circuit board. And yes you can use a beefier speaker. You can do this.
@aztekdummy
@aztekdummy 4 жыл бұрын
I gave away my DVD when I moved up to the 4K bluray and my pc doesn't play those so I couldn't capture. I have other ways and will be looking into that. like I said, I can change the sounds at will, so i'm not stuck with what I'm using now.

I enjoyed the video but am a little confused. You seemed disappointed at how simple the kit is. Like you say, for $50 I think it’s aimed at novices like me who would like a life size HAL9000 at home and would like to get one without either paying $600+ for a metal, professionally-made replica, or building one from scratch themselves when we lack the skills, tools or time. And HAL, as shown in the film, is a pretty straightforward prop. Maybe the kit would be a little better if the bezel was separate from the faceplate and if the camera lens was made of 7 or 8 separate rings that you needed to paint and stack. Anyway - yours turned out great. I’m not familiar with your channel but I’m assuming you produce the kind of finished models that I see in magazines and online that make my jaw drop with their craftsmanship, painting perfection and level of detail. 👍

Original LED must have had a current limiting resistor to allow it to run from 9V. Did you connect it in series or parallel with the audio circuit? Unlikely to work in series but should have worked in parallel. How did you connect the water-clear LED? Did you use a resistor? If not it will likely burn out quickly. Surprised you didn't use gloves after spending the time to clean the lenses. I think I would have coated the inner lens with clear red. Shame it's so expensive - it would have been a fun build.

they were parallel. the new clear one is too. and it does have a resistor on it. I guess it's just a better quality led. lens were cleaned between video segments and that part was edited out
