Thanks for sharing Lou! I love the behind the scenes on your aztec work. Amazing!

Your method for a randomized pattern on the saucer is beautiful. The same technique would look great on the Strange New Worlds Enterprise.

And I am very much looking forward to doing just that

Holy crap Lou, that's a large kit at the end! Love the aztecs don't think you wasted time with them at all, I'd definitely buy a set from you when I get the kit

Kelvin looks a sweet kit Lou,it would be cool to paint it with a pearl white basecoat,i have that Reliant kit,not got the time to build it yet,but just got hold of the clear shuttle bays,and door edges,that kit will take you the rest of the year to build and then some,but best of luck with it buddy !

Hey Lou, for extra stability maybe you could use thoughs sticky gel things you stick on the wall. Remove the plastic hooks and just use the gel pieces.

I liked the detail it add depth to the saucer section. I guess I will have two wait for next Friday to see what the nacelle and the secondary whole look like. Like to know where you got the 1/350 Reliant from, I was thinking of ordering one when I saw someone building one. I asked where he got it from and I never got an answer. I remember the person said something about sending it to Paragraph to get some Photoetch done for it. You might want to look into that.
@aztekdummy6 жыл бұрын
the guy who makes the Reliant conversion doesn't want to draw too much attention from the wrong folks, so I was asked to keep that on the low. When he announces a re-release, you'll know

Fascinating look into the product development of paint masks and color selection decisions! Quite an interesting process! The blend coat and satin finish really bring the paint together, what do you use for your clear satin? Keep up the great work, staying tuned for the next installment! THANKS

krylon satin coat in the big rattle can

Looking good Lou. The bridge kinda looks like the Jupiter 2.
@Mu-podcast6 жыл бұрын
The Kelvin is looking really good. It's an interesting design, and I think the final model will be a really nice display, especially lit up. That Reliant is a beast! That's going to be a fantastic journey watching you pour over that. At that scale, you can really do some great lighting. Is that to scale with the giant ToS Enterprise you have? It looks large enough to find people figures for it to see through some windows. Dan

Another great tutorial, Lou. Here's a thought, how about doing a pass with the templates using Tamiya pear clearl coat to give another level of interest to the finish?

Hi Lou, you mentioned using Com Art's Transparent smoke on the bussard and the hull. What color did you originally paint the bussard and did you airbrush the Com Art on the outside? Secondly, did you apply the Com Art to the deep panel lines only or airbush a light coat over the model? I know it's been 6 mos, sometimes I have a tough time remembering what I did. Appreciate any advice, thanks....and Happy 2020!
@aztekdummy4 жыл бұрын
O, I just pulled the kit off the shelf and it looks to me that I did not paint the bussards at all. if you must, you can spray clear orange from the inside. remember that there is a set of blades that need to be glued into the inside of the domes. That may be why I didn't paint mine. the lights gave it the color. I do remember that I did not airbrush the com-arts.. I brushed them into the panel lines then wiped them down with a bit of old t-shirt

yeah for CG ships everyone always has to put lots of greebles (small surface details) to sell the size and give interest to the model.

trying not to give away trade secrets ;) in Raleigh Hobby is the closest to my place to get Tamiyas, but they only carry the basics. Hangar 18 in Cary has the best selection

Lou those stand up "Phaser Banks" are actually the Photon Torpedo launchers.
@aztekdummy6 жыл бұрын
gotta disagree. they got no torpedo tubes behind them. They're basically stand-up phaser turrets. they just fire bursts not beams

Another great video! A weird thing I noticed ... at around 41:16, it looks like there are a lot of greeblies on one section of the saucer, but not elsewhere. I noticed it there because the wash made it more obvious to me. Is this a test shot thing, are my eyes tricking me or was the Kelvin actually like this? EDIT: or are those some of your masks?
@aztekdummy6 жыл бұрын
nope. for some reason, that one section has extra detailing. I don't know if that will survive to the final version or not
@billybobbarklow82896 жыл бұрын
Shoulda watched the whole video. RELIANT, RELIANT, RELIANT......... Lou I want one. Because revenge is a dish best served cold, it's very cold in space. Please consider information where to get it. Thanks bud, Build on Brother.

Great video as always. I was wondering...can you tell if this is a styrene or ABS kit? For some reason it looks to me like the kind of ABS that Pegasus uses...

Hi Lou. I may have missed you mentioning it at the beginning but what company makes this kit and what scale is it? I wouldn't mind trying to build as there is no lighting in it as I don't know how to do that but would of course get your masks. Thanks

Yeesh, Lou. I think I can hear a low hiss on the soundtrack -- it must be your brain thinking in 4-dimensional paint space. The results are remarkable. Can't say it's "too" much-- may be the right much.

Hey Lou, for the super x2 base , could you not have made the existing pin protrude through the CD base so it could still be located in the hole of the ship? Good solution by you anyway.
@aztekdummy6 жыл бұрын
the problem is that the hole is no longer the center of gravity since I added the lighting. the pin does stick thru the new plate

I say YES to The Reliant! Also, the base of the Kelvin appears to have the incorrect registry number on it. Although it could be these old eyes playing tricks on me.
@aztekdummy6 жыл бұрын
I have been informed that the base will be corrected on the third test shot. it got thru 2 rounds before it was noticed because they were relying on the file provided by the licensee and didn't think to question it

I understand the aztek paint as it adds depth and detail but has anyone ever asked as to why they can't color match a starship 400 years in the future?
@aztekdummy6 жыл бұрын
there was a great bit in the novelization of Star Trek: Motion Picture. basically they say that what you're seeing is the bare metals. they were getting ready to paint the final unifying coat when Kirk stopped them, because he liked the look and they were in a rush to get to V'ger. so he basically said put the numbers on it and lets go.
@denniscote40406 жыл бұрын
Ok thanks
@tvacchino6 жыл бұрын
As a Graphic Designer I find this hilarious actually!!!
@aztekdummy6 жыл бұрын
OK, I must reluctantly admit to advancing an urban myth. I was SURE I had read that bit in the novel. today I went back and skimmed the novelizations so I could cite the page number and it's not there. not in the paperback, not in the hard back. Maybe it was in one of the many hundreds of "making of" articles that circulated at the time... I remember it making an impression on me at the time, but my failing memory won't let me remember exactly where. I pledge to do better in the future
@denniscote40406 жыл бұрын
Lou Dalmaso no problem but as said it does add depth and detail over a featureless surface.
