Wow, that repaint really saved the project! It kinda sucks when you have to use so many products from different companies that you really don't know the reactions between paint and finish!

Lou, I feel your pain with the painting and re-painting. I'm working on the Revell 1/144 Apollo 11 Saturn V. It *looks* fairly simple but getting those sharp lines between the black and white paint has been a nightmare. The surface is ridged in some of those areas, so that doesn't help. I've been masking the white, painting the black, then find some bleed over after. So then I mask the black and paint the white, then pull some paint up with the masking tape, then do it all over again.
@ScottHallX3 жыл бұрын
Blaine - Try this little trick with those ridges - mask protecting the white and about to paint black. Before painting the black - spray the edge with white again - so any intrusions under the mask are actually white. Let it dry - and then spray your black. The white paint should've "plugged" any holes to prevent bleed.

Interesting and informative as always and I think the issues you had with the clearcoat were a blessing in disguise as the repaint looked way better to me the the original greys. BTW, the magnifying goggles you removed during your closing comments gave your hair a vaguely Romulan look. Knowing your fondness for all things Star Trek I'm sure it was intentional :)
@spacedock8733 жыл бұрын
Hi Lou. It looks like my week has been mirroring yours! Luckily I tested the clear coat I was going to use (tamiya rattle can) on a test piece before actually putting it on the Miranda class I'm working on. When it dried it was crazed and crackled! Phew - dodged a bullet there. Now, after doing the panelling I'm not happy with how dark it looks. I'm going to try a mist coat see if I can bring it back but the issue is that the under coats are a base of pearlescent white with very pale matt gray over the top. Not sure if the mist should be white or pearl. Going to have to make a decision and take the plunge. Wish me luck! 😟

The R2 Voyager doesn't look purple to me. The Bandai Voyager looks white, even after the re-paint your R2 looks greyer.

Who says this isn't a celebration, Lou! Your mistakes are as informative, entertaining and educational as any classroom environment I've been in. At the end of this "day" you've still got two sweet gleaming starships on the desk. Not bad. Interesting Light Ghost Grey theory. So, *don't* use the Fed Standard bottle color but *do* make your own. Hmm. Okay, I'm with you. Which brand of over coat clear did you use? Did I miss that? Because that's a scary interaction. An excellent week-- setbacks and all.

Hey, can you get into details as to what had been changed on the reissue? I just refurbished my original 1996 Voyager build and I wonder what they did different. On my kit even the deflector area part isn’t a clear part.
@NorfolknGoodeVids3 жыл бұрын
@@slighter Hi. Hope you're well. It's been a while since I had the first Revell Voyager but the first thing you notice in the more recent one is the number of windows has been corrected - the blocks of two and three viewports have their stanchions now. I seem to remember in the 1st issue, both deflectors were cast in opaque grey plastic whereas the main deflector (only) in the current one is cast in clear. The kit is still missing the four lifeboats, two each side aft of 'C' /3 deck (the deck just below the bridge 'platform.)' The bridge platform is still missing the 'ribs' detail as well. Still - I believe Paragrafix has that stuff covered: certainly has the missing lifeboats, at any rate! Stay safe.
