@𝒁𝒂𝒚𝒅 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑩𝒆𝒔𝒕 There are a lot of RAF bases that serve the US air force, such as Fairford, Mildenhall, and Lakenheath. It allows shorter journeys from the UK to Europe, as opposed to flying from the US. It’s especially useful in NATO missions.

True story. It was a few years ago, but I was on my way to SW Colorado and out in the desert south of Holbrook, AZ. I was alone and had been drinking coffee so I needed to stop. There is nothing out there, at all, and I think it may have been on the Navajo Reservation. It's beautiful. There wasn't a soul around for miles and I felt just fine pulling over and relieving my full bladder in the ditch next to the road. I was happily feeling relief when a heard the craziest noise from behind. I looked and couldn't see anything but I could sure hear something. It started as sort of a distant whistle that grew louder and louder. I'm still in the middle of trying to do business but I'd never heard such a racket. And it got louder. Now, I'm trying to zip up and at least get back in my car. I was back inside my pants but still zipping when a B-52 materialized from behind a mesa and he wasn't 100 feet off the ground, and he was hauling ass, too. I remember just staring in disbelief at this monstrous aircraft that was so close I could see the yellow on the pilot's helmet. I'll never forget, he looked right at me for a few seconds, too. God Bless America

Story not quite as good as yours, but I saw one quite low with gear up and no flap out at under 500'AGL going fast - perhaps +250KIAS and banking well over 30deg and I remember thinking they're actually not that large. This was about 8 years ago. It was far quieter than I expected too but that would be engine upgrades to keep them flying. They were throwing it around too - it was great to see. It was perhaps 20nm from an upcoming airshow that started on the weekend and it was a Tuesday afternoon. The area was over farmland with a lonely country road running through the area. I was the only truck on the road and I couldn't believe my luck as I go a free show.

@@jf7243 It was the LAST thing I would have expected to see in the middle of the high desert. There is NOTHING out there. It is as desolate as the surface of the moon. I didn't really expound on how low they were or how fast they were going. Honest to God, if you had been under the thing it would have given you the perfect flattop haircut he was flying so low. Fast too... I found out later, (I spotted them on another trip as well), that there was some targeting point in/around Holbrook, and haircut flights by B-52s were a regular thing. I'm not Joe America, but it gave me a rush of powerful pride you can't experience any other way. They flew that big-ass jet in and around high-desert mesa's and pipes at just a few hundred feet off the ground. I honestly didn't know they could operate at such a low altitude. The second time I spotted them, (there were 2), was almost as impressive but I wasn't surprised by it.

I was in Phoenix when the World Series was there and was walking to a neighbor's house. I was out in the street when I heard a jet sound and it was close. Too close. I frantically looked around the sky but there were a lot of trees that blocked some of my views. Like before, I had no idea what was up and my thinking was escalating to a plane crash in my neighborhood because It got loud. I was alone and in the middle of the street as the "brand-new" and still fairly classified B-2 bomber flew directly over my head on a low-altitude base turn to fly over the ball stadium for the anthem. It rumbled right over me so close I could see painted warnings on panels. Seeing those things usually means serious business is on the way and they ARE like a Darth Vader of aircraft. Interesting side note: It flew past and then turned for the stadium and when it did, it was almost impossible to see.

The B52 you see today just looks the same as the first versions, but that's where it ends. Everything has been upgraded and evolved. Airframe, engines, avionics, weapons capability etc.... The RAF's Vulcan was the holder of the longest distance flown during a bombing raid, when the RAF bombed Port Stanley Airfield in the Falklands, 8000 miles from Britain, but these guys topped that, by flying from the US to bomb in (I think) Afghanistan, returning afterwards to their base in the US. A distance of around 15'000 miles flown, non stop.

@@Brian-om2hh Flying a 15,000 mile round trip for a single bombing run is utterly wasteful, you would think they would at least have landed nearby for more ordnance or in case they would be required again, but to just return directly to the states... that was clearly just the wet dream of some air force brass who wanted prestige for his squadron by breaking the record or showing off his planes. If the RAF pissed taxpayer money up the wall like that they would never hear the end of it.

The biggest reason why they are the deadliest aircraft is because they are capable of carrying and launching a nuclear weapon , those things could now be sitting in Europe fully armed with a nuclear warhead and Putin and his people wouldn't have any clue , we could launch a nuclear strike when he least expects it since those planes can go undetected and our stealth bombers can also carry nuclear weapons and they can sneak into Russia and launch a strike in multiple places without ever being seen.

B-52s are getting the new F-130 engines and the plan is to keep the planes flying into the 2050s. That means the B-52 will see at least 100 years of service. Amazing!

I saw a video last week. Said don't mess with old people. They've lived through a lot and are not happy about being old. This is my addition, they probably have forgotten more than you may ever know. They can make you have a really bad day, same as those B52s.

Hey, U.S. Air force. How hard would be to update the plane with modern engines? You would gain stealth, speed, range and fuel economy. Not by just a bit, but a huge amount. While the whistle is powerful, seeing the black smoke, it kind of looks and feels like Russian hardware.

As a kid we went out to watch B-36s take off, in some god forsaken place my Dad was stationed, once they got their flight gathered they rumble over the field, made the ground shake for 20 minutes, at a Sack (no misspelling) base the B-52s screamed for ever. Only thing louder was standing guarding a Spooky park near the "tune up" apron when RF-4s blasted each engine. You could see the pilots grinning, they were lucky I didn't shoot them.

The first generation of B-52 aircraft started April 1952. This B-52 is the result of thousands of upgrades and modifications. Too late to fly in the Korean War. Starting in Vietnam through the Cold War, Dessert Storm War to free Kuwait then all throughout the Global War on Terror. The B-52 was engineered for arial bombing of the Soviet Union doing the Cold War days. Now once again prepared to go to Russia. The original pilots of the B-52 are now flown by the grandchildren and great grandchildren of the founding pilots from 1954. Remember the B-52's you see are nowhere near similar to the B-52's of 1954. Check out the movie called "Dr Strangelove: How I learned to love the bomb." Remember the last scene as a nuclear bomb is released. Yee-haw! The last scene. Plenty of movie scenes of the B-52.
