I'm still amazed that I watched B52s take off from Fairford during the Gulf war on live bombing missions and 33 years later I see them taking off again, still in service!! Just worrying that this could be the portent of more serious developments in Ukraine.

Its actually due to water injected with the fuel for certain conditions. *Borrowed from another site.* Water injection. It’s a cheap and cheerful way to temporarily increase the thrust of a turbojet engine without the use of an afterburner (an afterburner requires additional parts and plumbing and eats fuel at a redonkulous rate.) if you inject water into the combustion chamber of a turbojet engine, you increase the amount of reaction mass being expelled out of the exhaust nozzle - which increases thrust. the thrust from an air breathing jet or closed combustion rocket engine comes from the weight and velocity of the burnt fuel and oxygen being expelled from the exhaust, burning the material (fuel and oxidizer) expands the volume and increases the velocity of the mass being expelled. Injecting water increases the amount of mass that you can expand and squirt out. Newton’s third law and all that. the thing is - the injected water cools the combustion in the combustion chamber - which reduces the efficiency of the fuel burn - so you get incomplete fuel combustion and some unburnt fuel being expelled. This results in a more sooty exhaust since less of the fuel is being burnt completely. it’s usually only used on max power, fully loaded takeoffs. Older KC135 refueling aircraft with the old J57 turbojet engines (the same engine the B52 used in the A through G models ) also used water injection (newer KC135 models use a high bypass turbofan engine, and the B52H model uses the TF33 turbofan engine. Neither of those use water injection.) so the most modern (“modern” being a relative term… since the “newest” B52s - the H models, are older than I am… the last H rolled of the assembly line in 1962!) don’t smoke on takeoff - they don’t use water injection anymore, and only H models remain in USAF service. 5.5K views View 14 upvotes Upvote 14 10 Sponsored by Dream Home Team Inc. Should we have kept our Vulcans and Victors?
@turboslagКүн бұрын
They were designed for a totally different specific purpose and became obsolete. The B52 was designed as a multirole bomber with long service in mind.
@HymnfortheDudesКүн бұрын
@turboslag Not sure that's right. Both V's were designed to deliver stand off nuclear weapons but as we saw in the Falklands the Vulcan was also used to drop bombs. The Victor could outperform the Vulcan, so I think you're wrong there.
@turboslagКүн бұрын
@@HymnfortheDudes The Vulcan was the only aircraft the RAF had with the range, just, to reach the Falklands. I think it had to be mid air refueled twice, which in itself was a problem as the air tankers were also right on the limit of range, I'd need to look up the details of that mission again as it was a long time ago that I read about it, so could be wrong.
@HymnfortheDudesКүн бұрын
@turboslag It was a marvelous achievement and the thing as well was they said Black Buck was a failure in that the it's dumb bombs straddled the runway. There was no laser guidance in those days and from that height and that speed the Argies never knew what hit them and the Vulcan was miles away by that time. RAF ingenuity.
