the main thing i dont get is why you start sema builds so close to sema..... i get the drama aspect, but imo it doesnt make any sense. then again, theres probabbly far more to it than what we as viewers get to see also yes. ford did own mercury lol. in the late 30's, ford went from 2 brands (ford and lincoln) to 5, adding de luxe ford and lincoln zephyr, and a new brand that was mercury. basically to compete with GM and their 7 brands of stupidity (as a brit, im kinda surprised you didnt know this)

Even the biggest names that do Sema builds have to wait until around 3 months out to even start because you spend the rest of the year designing, getting parts lists, planning the fab work, and reaching out to sponsors and the sponsors won't put forward products and funding until the last minute either because Sema is a trade show after all so they are going to the last minute finishing their own products to send out to these builders and shops to incorporate them. And can you simply start building something before reaching out to sponsors and stuff? Sure. But what happens if you say, start building a MK4 Supra car but no products are really in developments for it to showcase and there is no sponsor that even wants a MK4 in their booth because they have a certain vision or product they are coming out with? That means all of that fab time, money, and effort are literally thrown in the trash because you spent all of that time building something for it not to even be on the floor. It is similar to custom furniture. You can be the best furniture maker in the world but you typically don't build a custom set until after a customer has been found, a deposit has been made, and a design has been finalized. Same concept with a Sema car.

​@wjpreslar its the front end of the car the S550 was a bit different in length of the wheelbase as well as the width, the most common way guys tend to solve it on these builds is by moving the wheelwell on the fenders back, but that requires the time to split them and shift them back

Here's a potential solution to your problem with supports - Look into something called "Tree supports"; it's a part of a program called Cura and it could probably trim off a lot of time from your 3D prints. Along with using a much larger diameter nozzle as suggested by others. These tree supports use much less plastic as they are more "smart" than regular vertical support structure.

Prusa slicer can also do organic supports and work really well. +1 on the larger nozzle size, although who knows what hotend is running on there. With something like a super volcano hotend or mosquito magnum + he could probably run 1.2mm nozzle and print it at least 3x faster.

print the bumper without the lip. = zero supports needed. Print the lip separately. Put Styrofoam block in the bumper to support the lip, then glue together. Lighter too.

Yeah, those supports are overkill and are eating into the print time. Plus they will have to do a lot of finish work so why not print some parts separate then assemble later. The printer is a great idea but sounds like they need someone to knowledge drop for them.

Switch to a much bigger nozzle, 1mm or more depending on what the hot end will allow. Slice the model near the upper lip and print the lower section with minimal support, and the upper few inches supported. Should easily cut that print time into 3/4 days.

Deep dish and/or concave wheels is where it’s at. A flat face wheel can often let down a build, making it look cheap and dated. The right stance and wheel/tire combo can be the make or break of any build. Been watching you for years and followed many of your builds. Best of luck with the channel and your health.

Nostalgia the build if you want to be period correct...!!! I also agree that the tires are too far back in the wheel opening, and the rubber is a tad small diameter wise for the opening.

Hey Chris, long time 3D printer user here. For prints that large I would highly recommend a larger diameter nozzle. I'm assuming you're using a .4mm or .6mm nozzle given that 9 day print time. Something like a 1mm or 1.2mm nozzle would get you way closer to a practical machine for prints that large. Happy printing man!

The time and weight of a print is mostly depending on the settings and the nozzle size. If you want to print a bumper a nozzle of 1.5 or 2 mm would be fine. Since you are probably going to fibreglass it there is no point in printing the bumper with supports like that. You just need to make the mould to make the fibreglass part from.

For the 3D printer big parts, just 24:57 print the shell / skeleton, and stretch cloth over the item, staple it in, and epoxy clear or epoxy over the part, fast way to get a mockup part, but account to shrinking

That would be one way. Slicing and printing in sections like he started doing works too. I'm just wondering why he's wastingf the print volume of that printer only doing one section at a time. He could have printed half the bumper in one go on that things even sectioned like it was. Either way I think if he knew more about printing, slicing, and setup he could have done the thing in one piece like he wanted, in a much shorter time frame that initially estimated. I'm a novice though and my printer isn't even working.

Use a bigger nozzle on the printer, and use tree supports rather than block supports as they are more filament efficient and get someone to sort out your bridging settings on your slicer so you can have larger support spacing. If you run a much larger nozzle like 1mm you will drop the print time epically plus getting industrial filament rolls. possibly converting to 3mm filament and running 1.5mm nozzle you would have been able to print a bumper in probably less than a couple of days.

for the 3d printer debacle. Yes, fdm printers are limited by the speed of the print head. Here's a few solutions. Use a bigger nozzle and thicker layer height. Tree supports can save a lot of time and material vs traditional supports, but make sure they're sturdy. Use at least 2 walls on the tree supports. Do some test prints to dial in support settings for different materials and layer heights to make the supported area look way better. And finally, learn how to use variable layer height to avoid the stair steps on the top of round surfaces. Look into a bambu labs x1 carbon for high speed high quality prints in a 10" cube build volume.

Printers that size are usually designed to use MUCH larger nozzles than the typical 0.4mm home hobby size. Think 2mm nozzles with 3mm filament. I also agree with some comments that you can print a bumper buck frame for fiberglass much faster than a whole bumper.

Some thoughts on the 3D printing topic: Firstly, use a 1.5ish mm nozzle (maybe even bigger) and increase the layer height accordingly. It'll cut down print time significantly. You do not need the detail a 0.4 mm nozzle gives you on such large prints. Also, the bigger nozzle will give you stronger parts. Secondly, if using supports, try to go for tree suppports instead of block support. The former only supports where actually needed, hence, saves time and filament. Overhangs of about 55 ° can usually be printed without the need of support. Thirdly, make sure you are using the Arachne perimiter generator when slicing your models. It'll likely decrease print time a little further and gives better detailed parts. There are a couple more slicer settings that can be tweaked to save time. One that can likely be turned off would be the "ensure vertical wall thickness".

so many thoughts, a bigger print nozzle with a different slicer and a different support type (tree supports) could take days off the print. mercury(and lincoin) have been ford sheet metal with different trim and features for close to a hundred years. as I understand it the mercury cougar was basically a granny spec mustang with a whole bunch of cool luxury features and extra legroom. every reproduction steel rear bumper I've ever seen has been like 2 inches too wide, doesn't matter if its a sportscar, truck or van. I think its got something to due with low speed impact protection. I feel like you should start ordering parts for next years sema build now so you have everything on hand when you get started on it next October. still turning into a cool build, and i'll be watching to see how you manage to pull it off last minute.

I don't know if you'll see this but Mirka makes a vacuum attached sanding system that eliminates 80 percent of the dust from sanding. I've used it in myself and it's great for keeping your work area cleaner.

Chris, I have a 3DP1000 printer. It's a large format 3D printer. 1meter x 1meter x .5 meter print volume. To cut print times I would recommend checking your infill and perimeter settings.Bring down the infill percentage to below 10% and perimeters to 1. You can reinforce it later if less perimeters will affect the strength. Also using a slicer such as simplify 3d might be better for the large format if you aren't using it already.

3D printing enthusiast here... usually... bigger printers are often fitted with bigger nozzles... say 0.6/0.8 or even 1.0... with an equally bigger layer height... you will need to do post processing either way so printing coarser is not going to make a huge difference to this process but it will dramatically cut down your print times even if you have to print in a slower speed since your hotend may not melt plastic quickly enough... but overall you are still printing faster as you are pushing more plastic out and run less layers

A tip for cutting time on 3d printing would be to focus on the complex geometry and curves and model in features that can use steel bar or foam panels for long sweeping spans. then fiberglass over the whole thing. (make sure the model is smaller by the thickness of the fiberglass) and it would save time since the 3dprinted part doesnt need to be strong

When you sell the 3D printer, I would highly recommend that you consider buying a 3-axis CNC router table (4x4 or 4x8) which would allow you to more quickly build polystyrene 'bucks/molds' for use with fiberglass and/or carbon fiber. 2" thick polystyrene sheets could be shaped as layers and then glued together as molds for fiberglass/carbon fiber parts creation. Such a table would cost as little as 25% of what you spent on the 3D machine. Materials for production could be significantly less with speed of production greatly increased. A 5-axis table would give you even greater flexibility if your needs justified the increased cost. In this build, you probably could have made a complete custom 1968-look body to fit the original 2019 Mustang without major modification of the car's body sheet-metal. Love everything that you guys take on.
