Quite simply one of the greatest speeches ever given in the history of this nation. I seriously question whether there is any sitting member of the current congress who is capable on their very best day of delivering anything half as moving, as eloquent and as factually precise as this EXTRAORDINARY WOMAN'S presentation. Barbara Jordan represented the very best of this nation. Education is everything, and this speech should be shown in every high school in America... especially in areas where the myth of white superiority still poisons its communities.. I vividly remember watching this speech as it happened as a nation sat absolutely glued to the television, my living room full of friends, and by the end of it everyone's jaws were hanging open. To this day Ms. Jordan remains a hero to me and to thousands of us who lived through those remarkable and tragic times. This woman would have been an extraordinary President of the United States.

She is a great hero of mine, and would have been a terrific Supreme Court Justice had she not been taken from us so young. >>Barbara Charline Jordan (February 21, 1936 - January 17, 1996) was an American politician and a leader of the Civil Rights movement. She was the first African American elected to the Texas Senate after Reconstruction, the first southern black female elected to the United States House of Representatives, and the first African-American woman to deliver the keynote address at a Democratic National Convention. She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, among numerous other honors. On her death, she became the first African-American woman to be buried in the Texas State Cemetery. {Bio from Wikipedia}

@@peterpluim7912 & Ronald Penny, I hope teachers highlight that part of her main point here is the need to act from what is rational and prudent, not out of emotion. THANK YOU for posting this, Ronald. Even better if teachers go further to compare Barbara Jordan's boldness and principle to members of Congress who followed her. Like how in 2001, another black female named Barbara, Barbara Lee, was the only vote against the AUMF in response to 9/11. This vote of 420-1 happened on September 14th, while the WTC site was still smouldering. Along with 98-0 in the Senate, this was a cumulative vote of 1 lone person who took a stand in opposition to 518 fellow members of Congress. This is as principled as it gets. This is a prime example of keeping emotions in check. Perhaps the ultimate example, in all cases of legislative action. 18 years later, there are many military veterans who are disturbed in how badly they had been lied to by our government, and that this longest war in the history of the USA has been an utter waste of time and money. And far more importantly, lives. She explained her reasons at the time: "In granting these overly broad powers, the Congress failed its responsibility to understand the dimensions of its declaration. ... The Congress should have waited for the facts to be presented and then acted with fuller knowledge of the consequences of our action." Joining Congress at around the same time as Lee was yet another black woman, also named Lee. Sheila Jackson Lee has been on the front lines today in holding Trump accountable, pressing for Impeachment as the appropriate remedy. This House member was also from Houston, and was inspired by Barbara Jordan. Here is an article going into that, with a photo of the two of them shaking hands in 1994: www.newsweek.com/impeaching-trump-impeachment-democrat-jackson-lee-1446990 It looks as though it may be soon that this House member who had been mentored by Barbara Jordan will be getting her own chance to give a speech on why it is important to vote on principle when it comes to this issue of holding a president accountable when there is clear evidence that there has been wanton violation of the law in the highest office of the land.
@dahawk85745 жыл бұрын
So yeah, if I was teaching this in school, I would follow up the inspirational story of Barbara Jordan by including the two who followed: *Barbara Jordan > Barbara Lee & Sheila Jackson Lee.* Defining moments in 1974, 2001 and today, among others. They form a veritable trinity of integrity.

@@MakeupHuesAndViews Men and women, black, white, or any color between. She is amazing. It's crazy that she's presented as a footnote in all the Texas history classes I've taken over the years. The fact that she was the first black woman Congresswoman of Texas is important, but merely a small piece of her true accomplishments. Seeing her speak for the first time, I see how she was able to punch right through all the barriers in her way. She is so eloquent, intelligent, and quietly commanding that you MUST listen to what she has to say. We truly need more like her to come to government, especially in her home state of Texas.

I have a new found respect for this woman. Wow, this speech is amazing. She delivered with it with an historical foundation and with a unique power, precision and a righteous rage. To think how low we have fallen since this woman was in office. What a pale imitation are Maxine Waters, Barbara Lee et al to this powerhouse of a woman.

One of the great speeches of all time (there is a compact disc). Complete command & articulation. No hyperbole, no bias.

So proud this lady is from my state of Texas. She was brilliant, and played a key role in this impeachment, reminding the world of their duty as legislators to defend the Constitution.

What an amazing woman she was! This is one of the most riveting speeches I’ve heard in my life. I get chills every time she says “The President did know” Barbara Jordan was a class act, people like her are needed today in politics!

She was a very intelligent and well spoken stateswoman. It would be wonderful to have her still today.

It's worth remembering that there were plenty of people in the United States in 1974 - as there are today - who didn't believe she had the right to sit in Congress. I wonder if any of them reconsidered, once they'd heard her speak so eloquently, so knowledgeably, and with that "voice of God" cadence as her friend Ann Richards called it?

I truly believe that every actor portraying a judge on a tv show or movie watched a Barbara Jordan speech to form their character. Each and every judge on a tv show makes me think they're doing their best Barbara Jordan impression.

If only we had Barbara Jordan today. What would she think if she could see Trump/Putin now?

baritonebynight she would vomit 🤮 in disgust. However if she was still around I don’t see that he would’ve stayed in office long.

It’ll probably be a hard long look, but we have to do what is necessitated to keep this beautiful country in tact. #GodBlessAmerica #Ms.JordanRIP #Beyondparty!

Ms Jordan commands the respect that we should have for our congress. I would love to see our current president go up against Ms Jordan and tell her to go “back where you came from come.” She would shred him with facts and he would not have a prayer saying it was “fake news.” What a incredible difference she could have made in our country if she could have sat on the Supreme Court.
