What is a living wage?
A living wage is a human right - a wage that allows an individual to afford a decent standard of living for themself and for their family. It is also an enabling right, meaning it allows other human rights to be fulfilled (e.g. right to education, right to health). Unlike minimum wages, which are the lowest permitted by law, living wages are based on benchmarks driven by field research and determined by specialist organizations.
By paying a living wage - going beyond the legal minimum to provide people with the resources needed to support themselves and their families - companies transform patterns of exclusion and oppression into empowerment.
B Lab is adding new application guidance to the B Impact Assessment that will recognize new benchmarks and accreditations for companies providing a living wage. We take a look at what defines a living wage with Bernard Gouw, Senior Manager Social Standards at B Lab Global, and how it can be a tool for building an inclusive economy.

You guys need to really crack down on companies who have a B Corp certification while stagnate wages and simultaneously increasing their own employee housing rent. It's a nice sentiment that you guys have, but when an employer increases their own rent twice in a year while not paying anyone more is unfair to the workers. The B Corp certification has too many holes in it to actually make changes that help the workers beyond the bare minimum.
