I envy you guys who are still young enough to think of bugging out when the SHTF. I had all kinds of plans once to do the same but being 70, low income and in some what reduced health I've resigned myself to being one of the ones who stand our ground and keep the wolves at bay for as long as we can. My thoughts are with you and I hope any little thing I can do on the home front may keep the enemies, who ever they turn out to be off your backs until you can escape ! Good luck !

I like B.O.B. a lot. Had a neighbor who converted a church bus to a motorhome (on the cheap.) No solar panels but he welded a 3000 watt generator on the back bumper. 2 years ago he hit the road and no word from him since! :) Your "open air toilet" concept is used plenty in tiny homes. Somebody says "Excuse me while I take a dump..." same time he lifts the cover. Immediately, he has COMPLETE privacy. In our 2001 v-10 motorhome We keep several small inverters. Plug one in when we need it. You could sell your big inverter on eBay and you could afford a nice tv and some other finishing projects. =GREAT JOB!
@CampervanKevin8 жыл бұрын
+OgMandin0 Mr Ragpicker, thank you for the kind comments! This bus is now sold. The small inverters suit me just fine for my needs and eat less power doing it. I recently purchased a cobra 2500 watt, but it will power a good bit more than just a cpap. Hope you have time to follow my other builds.

I keep seeing these for sale and I always gravitate towards one of these over the cargo vans, camper vans, converted box trucks or school buses--even the Sprinter vans (which I really like, but they are very expensive). Thanks for this. For years I've thought one of these would make a great RV and you've proven it. Nice!

RV Crazy I have had 4 , 7.3 diesels. Good engines but I will always have gas from now on.
@RVCrazy9 жыл бұрын
Wow, can you explain why you're going to stay with gas now? I didn't use my 21 passenger bus enough to really figure out fuel economy but with how everybody seams to love the 7.3 I'm surprised to find you saying otherwise.
@CampervanKevin9 жыл бұрын
I have had 4 7.3 powerstrokes. Great engines. The cost of service at around 175 k on these engines can run around $2500. For 3 k I can get a new v10. The v10 will do 80 percent if not better what the 7.3 can.You have to be towing over 10 k to really see that difference. I averaged around 13 to 14 in my e350 ambulance dually that I once had. By the time you figure in oil changes, and cost of fuel difference- the v10 levels out. If you have a 7.3 be proud of it, but don't overlook the v10.

Front and rear receiver hitches are handy. One of my fabricating biz customers had me mount hitches front and rear also. He had a 12 volt winch mount that plugged into the 2" hitch receivers. Handy for self-rescue, if you get stuck somewhere. Pull your stuck rig out from the front OR rear. He even carried a folding "sand anchor" (folding plow looking gizmo that dug in when you pull on it until it is solid enough to pull your vehicle out with, then it pulls right back out from a different attachment point..). Another trick I do for the receivers is to weld a couple of 1/2" grade 8 nuts, 1 onto the side and 1 the bottom of the receiver hitch, over drilled holes so that hardened grade 8 bolts screwed into them tighten up onto the hitch tang inside. That keeps things like your bicycle carrier or even a mobility scooter carrier mount jammed solid into the hitch, preventing them from rattling and banging around on the slop of the receiver mount. It helps a lot when any hitch or accessory plugged in there has absolutely no play or slop in it.

This is a very nice set up. It is among the best set ups that I have seen that is both very useful and still relatively stealthy. I have thought of this set up years ago as have many others probably. The gas mileage is the one fly in the oinment. If the rig had a diesel engine maybe it would improve the the miles per gallon. I realize that all large rigs get this mileage. It is the one very large expense that makes boon docking or travel camping a hardship. We all want to travel and see the country and yet we need to earn money and that is difficult especially on the move.

Ed noyb I had 98 e350 ambulance dually with body removed and flatbed installed. It had the powerstroke 7.3. The best it could do was 13.5. If you figure in the extra cost of fuel and oil changes 10.5 out of the v10 gas is very respectable. The v10 is 85% of what the powerstroke can do... in my opinion.

The only problem I have with living on the road in a vehicle is parking, but that is due to the type of vehicle. I live in a Semi Truck. I've been living on the road long enough that being in a house feels foreign. I spend about 23 hours a day inside the truck and travel an average of 12,000 miles a month, all paid. I've considered building or buying something similar to your BUS to take time off the job of driving and roam freely. The motorcycle will be a necessary tool to increase efficiency and versatility. There are just some places I can't go, and I NEED to reclaim that freedom.

democratic secular free society theocracy stinks My, what a big name you have. Lol I have my sights set on a Class C and going living full time in it. Once I get the RV, I won't need to be in a truck. I'll have income from military benefits and a small agriculture business. I hope to use the RV to catch rain water, filter and distill it, and use that for drinking, gardening, hygeine, and septic. Inside the RV will be a small hydroponic/organic garden. Hopefully, the business will help establish more local community based gardens. I'll trade for fuel if I need to relocate. Otherwise, BLM land and parks seem inviting. I can hardly wait!

my older shuttle bus its was Roadworthy in 2013 with inspection something are missing the rear Air conditioning an the Compressor was gone, it only has 28 gal tank yet which allow it to travel over 200miles on 2 refills, its has handicap rear doors (no lift) our plan for it a Mobile Workshop. the former space of AC Compressor once was is being replace with a i3000 inverter generator custom rack for it will have to add few fans to it

+lil blue bus adventurers being able to stand up where you live is pretty important for quality of life. Have you considered those bubble skylights above showers in rvs. Salvage yards should be full of them.

+Campervan Kevin i been thinking about a bubble top like a camper van.. my bus isnt wide its only a single rear tire bus 13 ft inside from the back door to driving compartment.. just not sure id be able to do a change my self.. it works just have to keep my head tilted down going in and out.. allot better than the jeep Cherokee.

Awesome video Kevin. You got Bob at a steal for $3,000.. I can't find a decent extended van under $5,000.
