Filmed on Location at the Music Exchange in Sacramento, CA. Bösendorfer / Yamaha/ Apple team up for a tech knock out program, that is causing a lot of attention in the music world. It is our understanding that Bösendorfer developed this system under financial support from Yamaha, and it presently available under specially built pianos from those two companies.

For over one hundred years the player piano has been evolving, and now we have what sits before me here. There are those who will say that this is a system that has been around for awhile, but honestly they are not seeing what I see. This is the next very big step in technology bringing us beyond the edge of anything that has been done before.

James Bates, The piano disc system is a system designed to fit many models of pianos, but also requires a long slit to be removed from the bottom of the piano, and honestly would be a great concern to me personally. This system is designed into the piano from the very conception of the instrument. I honestly have seen no better system than the one offered by Bosendorfer / Yamaha Disklavier. It plays wonderfully, and recreates the performance perfectly.

C series is all grown up and has turned into the CX. It sounds really wonderful. And it totally records you and plays you back. That's what's cool. And then you can take this and play you on a Bosendorfer or Yamaha anywhere in the world that has the same disclavier technology on the pianos.

Hello James, you are an amazing player and this Disklavier system is also really amazing! One question to you: when sitting right in front of the self-playing piano…do you feel that the replayed music on the piano is of the same dynamic as your own personal playing? Or is it slightly less pronounced? Thank you very much

My mom was a piano teacher, but I studied classical instruction from a composer, and touring classical pianist. I also studied Jazz, drums, and about anything else we could think of that sounded like fun. When I was still in a high chair I use to play around with a Roland 106 Keyboard, but honestly just liked to play with the crazy sounds I could get it to make.

What are the models for both Yamaha and bösendorfer that incorporates this technology?
@ThePianoforever
@ThePianoforever 5 жыл бұрын
Only ones made from the beginning for this system, but my understanding is the Bösendorfer 214 VC, and the Yamaha C2X (maybe other CX versions as well?)
@benjaminsmith2287
@benjaminsmith2287 5 жыл бұрын
It's called DC2X and it's on most of the CX pianos, but it's also on the CF pianos. Including the 9 foot CFX. It's the DCFX. It's also called Enspire. And it's on a few Bosendorfers as well.

I'm in shock! Did you try the "silent piano" feature? If so, when you played it, did it feel the same as if you were playing it without the "silent piano" feature? And that piano is absolutely stunning just to look at, with that polished ebony. If I had this piano, I don't think I'd ever leave the house!

Unfortunately, I've discovered the love of piano music in relative old age(24 yrs). I don't think I can ever be good as @ThePianoForever and many others who've started learning piano when they were children. But I do still want to listen to acoustic piano music in person , preferably played by someone better than me. Do you think this system can replicate at least 99 percent of the performance of some the great piano artists who've provided recordings for the Yamaha disklavier system?
@networkguy153
@networkguy153 3 жыл бұрын
I know this is 4 months old but I see you never got a reply. I think the answer is yes, a modern disklavier can reproduce a performance very accurately, they have been able to for about 20 years now. In early 2000s, there was an international piano competition where one of the performers couldn't be there in person for some reason, so he performed remotely using 2 disklaviers - he played in his country on one, while the judges heard his performance thousands of miles away on the 2nd disklavier. They also had a video feed to judge his hand movements, and the performance was recorded at both ends so they could be compared. If its close enough for a competition of this level, I'm sure it will exceed the expectations of an amateur listener :) I want one myself!

Would this system work with Steinway piano? Provided Steinway wants to collab on this.
@ThePianoforever

The Disklavier system is one that is designed into the piano from the first day of production and could not be added to any piano after the piano has been made.

Yes, I also think that this is also used in electronic organs too James, because of the MIDI technology and playback facilities on an organ, would allow an organist to play a piano and allow playback of a piece of music - to allow the organist to do a duet
