Amazing, when I was in china & spoke Manderin.. they knew right away I came from GuangDong, due to my Guangzhou accent... but myself left there to USA already more than 40 years...hehe

I have been in Canada for 56 years now, still have a strong Cantonese accent, in English and in 普通話,very recognizable. So whenever a Mandarin speaker asks me where is home province, I always say 黑龍江。 少小離家老大回, 鄕音無改鬢毛衰,兒童見面不相識,笑問客從何處來!

When I first went to China, they all knew I was from out of the country. It's not because I don't speak Mandarin, but it's due to my Mandarin was too perfect. I did not have any accents, so they knew I came from either Taiwan or Singapore. They told me the locals all have a bit of accents.
The Japanese , Korean although located in northern part of Asia closer to northern China , if what you say is correct, can help explain why their Han Zhi pronunciation is similar to most southern dialects and not mandarin? They were greatly influenced by China in ancient time and learn a lot from China. They should pick the Han Zhi pronunciation that time, don’t they? Just curious. Thanks

They mostly use the pronunciation of the mid-old Chinese, which is before the Song dynasty.
@香蕉和树 胡化==退化: From Encyclopedia Americana (page 533, Vol.6 ): "The new regime (Yuan Dynasty) was especially offensive to the scholar-officials. In place of their unchallenged mastery of the political order, they now found themselves supervised by all sorts of foreigners, Mongols, Turks, Iranians, Arabs, Georgians and Armenians. At one point their social position sank so low that satirists ridiculed them as little better than beggars.Worst of all was the general barbarization that the Mongols bought to Chinese life. At court, throughout the administration, and ultimately in the society itself, civilized restraint gave way to cruelty, ruthlessness and excesses of all kinds"

@@henryjo6071 I audited a graduate class at Rutgers University by a NAE member who spent several weeks on the PDEs for the vowels etc. He used to work for AT&T and was an expert in speech recognition using hidden Markov model etc. I think The techniques used in current speech recognition (deep-learning etc) could also be used to quantify the differences in both the tones and the sounds that exist in different dialects (languages).

@@shaoouhai3532 I suppose it is a new tech by separating f1- f3 volumes and vibrations in the ways of phonological process. Is it like that? Btw, damn, at & t really has been doing this research with linguists for quite a long time…. I guess more than 50 years, didn’t it?

@@henryjo6071 I guess something like what you said but speech recognition itself is NOT my research focus
