I want to build this. I just got into unRAID and this was the build that crossed my mind. How is the power consumption?
@MrSilvann3 жыл бұрын
Hi. I have watched your all unraid videos. I enjoyed. I am planning to do something similar but I do not understand one thing. On your first videos when you set up 2 gaming vm in one room you had connected 2 monitors keyboards and mouses. How you are using your gaming vm if your server is in basement now?

Wish you the best of luck on your new build, im actually in the process of reversing my unraid build. I sold my old gaming PC to build an ultimate Unraid server to combine as Gaming/Work/Streaming.... it didn't work out for me due to kernal issues with 400/500 series motherboards for AMD still with Unraid. I built an AMD 3950x rig with full watercooling setup, just to find out onboard audio didnt work and neither did usb3.0/3.1 within unraid correctly and i was having buggy issues with my 10gb ethernet also, but the entire NAS side of unraid worked flawless LOL. So i am moving my 3950x build over to bare metal dual boot Windows/linux since everything works perfectly on bare metal. I am currently waiting on parts i ordered for an Intel 10100 setup, went super budget with Quicksync, because after comparing transcoding in plex from my Intel Laptop using the iGPU and the 1080ti, the quicksync transcodes looked much better, so switching to that route for plex streams and run the 2nd system as NAS/Plex/Dockers only setup and do all the heavy lifting on the 3950x. plus using GPU for transcoding plex streams really annoyed me that it would use as much as 130watts of power more just transcoding.

Hey William Huston, RN, thanks for watching. That sucks man. Well.. You have a kickass desktop now :) As for myself, I haven't experimented with GPU transcoding. It's on the list for this build. Please let me know how the UHD630 handles that. Good luck with the project :)

@@b00bytrap i got most of the parts, i am just waiting on 1 last part to show up, it was delayed in postage, so when it shows up ill reach back out to you on the results. Im thinking your not experiencing the same issues i had due to the older threadripper motherboards being more mature on bios versions and been on the market longer. I was excited to see the new version of unraid 6.9b come out in hopes of it fixing the kernal issues with my motherboard, but unfortunately the issues still exist. I truly wanted to make the 3950x work as intended, because it uses so little power within unraid. My system sits at 93 watts from the wall with a full water cooling system within unraid running all my dockers, pihole, plex server... using on demand turbo scaling. Another reason i went with Intel 10th gen for the NAS/Plex/Dockers is i came across another person who just built a new unraid server using the same intel i3 10100 and motherboard i ordered, there is a new feature with the new intel turbo boosting they use now, that you can underclock the base frequency now and it can still turbo up to the max clock. So the guy has his 10100 cpu clocked down to 1,100mhz/core base using 8 watts at idle in his unraid server, but will boost up to 4,300mhz when demand needs the higher frequency using 61 watts.

Looks an excellent upgrade just a query as I would never be able to afford such a set up, does it make a difference to performance which cores you assign to differing systems?
@b00bytrap4 жыл бұрын
Hey Andi Archer, thanks for watching. Well I sold my RTX 2080 Ti for it xD. I don't think it does matter all that much but I might be wrong about that. You can pin CPU cores to be used only for that specific docker or VM. That will help with the performance of that instance.

b00bytrap yes it helps

Do you really need the extra pci lanes? 3900x destroys this thing (single threaded AND multithreaded)
@b00bytrap4 жыл бұрын
Hey RockTouching, thanks for watching. Well yes, mainly that was the reason why I wanted a TR. I consider the quad channel to be a bonus. As for the speed. If I wanted more speed I would have bought something faster. Even my 2700x was fast enough for my use, it simply just didn't have the lanes and cores
@ksp12782 жыл бұрын
AMD clearly don't see the need for it, as they have discontinued the threadripper line after the 3000 series. I have built an unraid PC with a 5950X on x570 chipset. With a gen 4.0 chipset you basically have twice as much bandwidth to play with. I run three GPUs in it and they all run fine, even at the same time. one of which is an RTX 3080 and a second is a Quadro RTX 4000. One is only running at x4 PCIe lanes, but that card (a 750ti) works fine with that and I'm using it for a Windows XP gaming VM. I get over 1000 FPS in Unreal Tournament 2004 for instance. I have a PCIe USB 3.0 controller that I pass through to the XP VM and the motherboard has 3 controllers built in of which two I can pass through to Windows 10 VMs.

What I am curious about. How necessary is it to spend that much more for ECC memory for medium-small applications? I understand that in a real professional environment it can really have some benefits. Many years ago I was running quite some servers myself, but I never countered any problems whatsoever for all those years with just standard memory.
@b00bytrap4 жыл бұрын
Hey Piet Muijs, thanks for watching. Well, let me put it this way. You'll only find that out when you need the files that might have been corrupted when you're accessing them again. Until then there's simply no way of knowing. I just prefer ECC RAM for my servers. It's not that much more expensive. All four modules combined set me back for about €400,-. Fair enough the first 2 are 2133 so not that great for this CPU. Maybe I'll replace those in the future when I need higher RAM speeds.
@p_mouse86764 жыл бұрын
@@b00bytrap I understand. But don't have most file systems also error correction as well? Also, how is that scenario different than just a regular desktop? It would have the same issues. Don't get me wrong, I am absolutely not saying that it's bs to use ECC. It's more just a question out of interest.
@leexgx4 жыл бұрын
@@p_mouse8676 if the error was caused by the memory, the data will be saved with the error and the dual parity will compute it with that saved error, because as far as its concerned it was the correct data ecc udimm is are not that expensive just make sure motherboard/cpu combo actually supports and enables ecc functionality witch asrock boards definitely do (other boards may passively support ecc with no options in the bios, or you can get a motherboard that's missing the ecc module in the UEFI BIOS, so the ecc modules will work but in non-ecc mode but without the ecc functionality)

vraagje hoeveel vermogen verbruikt je server nu ben zelf bezig voor een thuis server maar will graag iets wat ook energie zuinig is
@b00bytrap4 жыл бұрын
Hey Danny, thanks for watching. I'll reply in English so others can read it as well. I did measure the power usage and with the same config, it's not higher than my 2700x (not what I expected). This might change when the load on the CPU increases. Here are the results: test 1 (array started, dockers running but no VMs): 100-105W/h test 2 (array started, dockers and Vega VM running): 110-115W/h test 3 (array started, dockers, Vega VM and Gaming VM (idle) running): 110-120W/h test 4 (array started, dockers, Vega VM and Gaming VM (GTA V) running): 230W/h

No LSI raid controler in IT MODE ? And you can unmount the iso of your vm
@b00bytrap4 жыл бұрын
Hey J J, thanks for watching. I don't see why I need a hw raid controller in IT mode as I have enough SATA ports available (maybe I'm missing something? just curious). As for the ISO, which one would that be?
@jj-icejoe66424 жыл бұрын
b00bytrap so in this case Unraid can have Full Control of you Array. I’m Talking about the iso Image of your vm you can unmount it in your unraid configuration when the Installation is done.

Mind sharing your iommu groups screen and the XML file for the gaming vm?
@williamhustonrn61604 жыл бұрын
really no sense in this, every PC has different iommu grouping based on the motherboards and versions, for example when i first built my AMD unraid server i had issues with bad RAM slot, so i had to RMA the motherboard, the 2nd motherboard i got was a different version of the same motherboard and the iommu groups were actually different using the exact same hardware.
