It's even easier to cheat as long as you can feel the coin by touch, since catching the coin and slapping it into the back of your hand is an acceptable way of performing a coin toss. You can quickly get used to the coin and just slap it with whatever side you want up every time.
@Plasmapigeon2 жыл бұрын
Good point, I guess it's implied you have to call the side before you flip the coin though, but the average observer probably wouldn't notice.
@michaelfortier7726 Жыл бұрын
Usually that is why the other person calls head or tails
@adamnielson42 Жыл бұрын
@@michaelfortier7726 that has nothing to do with who calls it though? What he's saying is if someone called heads, and you can feel the coin landed on tails, you can slap the coin on to your hand, which flips it.

There's an easy remedy against this form of cheating though: 1) You throw the coin 2) You catch the coin, but don't reveal it yet 3) The other person calls heads or tails 4) Reveal That way you have no way of knowing what the other person will pick, and can't manipulate the outcome to suit you by precision flipping. (You could still maybe do some sleight of hand tricks on the reveal though, but I don't know exactly how that would work.)
@tailez6062 жыл бұрын
Suppose the coin thrower can consistently get the coin to land on whatever side they need. At that point it doesn't matter which side it landed on because it can most certainly be manipulated to be on whatever side it needs to be. A quick flick of the "holding" hand as you're lifting your "hiding" hand could be used to flip the coin into the other orientation. Or using the "hiding" hand's thumb to flip the coin as you lift up the hand.
@julikaiba2 жыл бұрын
@@tailez606 or simply keep it in your catching hand until an answer is chosen, flipping it on the back of your other hand when required, or just opening your catching hand if its already correct side up
@AMan-xz7tx2 жыл бұрын
if you're quick and eagle eyed enough, you'll see what the coin was when they caught it. doesn't work if they know what the coin is too, and they do that thing where they slap the coin onto their arm to call it so you don't win, this is how BOTH sides can cheat, but the cheating coin flipper gets the last laugh now, if you did this in the dark, or put tape on both sides of the coin to prevent peeking, then it's totally foolproof

The graph of idealized toss outcomes is pretty neat. You then mention how in the real world the bouncing action causes chaotic outcomes. It would have been really cool to show the chart after taking into account bounce physics, to drive home the concept.

This method is exactly why in many sports events the coin is required to fall on the ground in all tosses (although the referee shouldn't prefer any result in the first place)
@Ogema-1 Жыл бұрын
This is actually well known, this is why there are actually a number of rules on how to conduct a fair coin toss. The biggest one is the person not flipping the coin gets to call, this also prevented cheating with weighted coins .

Back when I was a kid, I heard of some way to practice flipping the coin to get heads every time, but I didn't want to bother practicing it. So I came up with an easier sleight-of-hand trick for it. When it lands in one hand, quickly note what it is, then make it what you want when you flip it onto the back of your other hand (by rotating it to leave the side you want up or flipping normally if you wanted the other side).

@asterpw Жыл бұрын
Yeah I used to fidget with flipping a quarter as a kid and figured out it was not too hard to remove the randomness. You can hear the sound as it's spinning in the air so as long as it sounds the same and you grab it at the same time it's consistent. It's only spinning at like 5 revolutions per second or something.

Theres an even easier sleight of hand trick on this. It works better with bigger coins. Its hard to explain in words, but you basically lay the coin near your index finger with the side you want face up in your palm and flick your index finger upward as you toss. Instead of actually flipping, the coin goes into the air at an angle and spins horizontally. The angle and speed of the spin give the illusion of it flipping and you just let it land in the palm of your hand I can't remember where I learned this, but I think it was maybe some coin magic dvd by Jay noblezada from penguin magic.
