1016....my brother was the crew chief of that plane back in the early 70s to the late 80s, i had the honor of being able to go out with him to work on it when we were both stationed together at Ellsworth A.F.B. S.Dakota. i was a missile cop working out in the minuteman II field that spanned the state. having a 3 day on 6 day off schedule made for time for me to go out n work with him. sadly he passed away a few yrs ago....R.I.P. @@PancakeBoi The U-2 has never been decommissioned even on paper. It is flown by the USAF on official missions to this day, unlike the F-117 which is only used as a target drone to test air to air and ground based radar systems. It's no longer used as an attack aircraft.

Why do the Brits use the lead and chase vehicles after take off's and landings?? Are they afraid the pilots will get lost on the tarmac?
@jimmy_wang_6 ай бұрын
My understanding is that it's both for new pilots on rotation so they become familiar with the 'base' and to keep birds and rodents from being sucked into those engines
@SMichaelDeHart6 ай бұрын
@jimmy_wang_ huh, that makes sense. I thought Britain was big into using hawks around the airports to keep those problems at bay. Especially since it was the sport of kings.
@GlasgowCeltic886 ай бұрын
@@SMichaelDeHart if you're talking about the white car chasing the Dragon Lady as she came into land... The car's chasing after her because sat in the front passenger seat is another U2 pilot talking the Dragon Lady's pilot down, calling out altitude and if he's drifing off centre. Because of the position of the cockpit and the long nose of the U2 the pilot has zero visibility when it comes to landing.
@SMichaelDeHart6 ай бұрын
Thanks...good point. I just ever see the vehicle on US Military bases. As in leaders or followers. I have seen it many times in the UK.

Also, when landing the U2 does not have the supports under the wings, and requires extra help to make sure it doesn't flip on one side damaging a wing.

It was lovely to have both the U2 and B52 aircraft visits. Long may they have unlimited visits to the UK and Europe. Vladimir Putin needs to understand that NATO and all individual countries will support Ukraine and Europe and, if necessary, we American, British, and Canadian (ABC) can deploy to protect these countries borders. Cold War defence can be quickly reinstalled.

@rhodium1096 The British Hypersonic Mach 5 missiles are currently in development with many options for deployment by 2030, though it might be earlier because of the threats from Vladimir Putin. I was hoping for Mach 7 or higher with the new technology.

The U2 when taking off, the wing wheels fall off…what happens when she lands?
@dartmoordave5 ай бұрын
They have reinforced wing tips with wear pads that get changed, but the speed is so slow when they finally tip over its all part of the spec. The guys in the pickup carry the wheels and clip them on. If you look at the U2 take off prep you see the ground crew prepping the wheels for dropping after take off.

I'm sure its still a valuable asset. Its still the only spy plane that can fly 13-14 miles in the sky. basically undetectable unless you're looking for it (which nobody is anymore, since they are "decommissioned") it's been upgraded with stealth coating and can communicate to satellites and ground assets better (bunch of other secret spy stuff i'm sure).
