Hello everyone and how do you do!
Today, I’m talking about engine surge and actions that pilots can do to either keep the engine running or shut it down. In this clip I show you how to handle a recoverable engine surge. When I say recoverable, I mean that the engine can be kept running to take advantage of the fact that we will still be getting Hydraulic systems from it and also make use of the electrical power as it has a generator on it- thus maintaining good systems redundancy. We always do as much as we can to keep an engine running. Next video, I’ll do a non recoverable engine surge with severe engine damage so you can see the difference. Have a watch of this one and hope you like it😀. Chi Di Gin! Later!✈️✈️✈️✈️

Thanks and brilliant video as always. I see there's an engine separation option there, that's a very rare scenario! I would love to see how that is handled as and when you and your colleagues have time to share, again massive thanks!

Once you landed you would get engineers to look at the engine that surging?

Hi captain, I was wondering how you make sure all thrust levers are completely in one line in the aircraft. Do they snap together a little bit? or is it actually that easy to keep them all at the same level? Cheers!

How long do you usually work as a second officer before becoming a first officer? What is the upgrade process like in your airline? Are they (SO) type rated just like the first officers or do they “only” have a simplified TR course.

Hello Captain thanks for the video. Should you then consider shutting off engine 4 to avoid consumption ? Or will it remove hydraulic function ? Thanks!

Short ans: You don't usually shutdown an engine because it surges. Long ans: Surge is not a fire, although you may see short bursts of fire/smoke coming out from the exhaust side or intake side of the engine. It is caused by disruption of airflow within the engine thus fire in the combustion chamber leaks out. It is usually not cause by component failure and, therefore, temporary. On the other hand, engine fire is usually caused by component failure such as oil leak or something overheating. Both surge and fire gives power fluctuations, high EGT and high vibration. To distinguish between the two, look at the fire alarms. There are three categories of surges 1) Self recovered surge. This means airflow within the engine resumes to normal without pilot intervention. 2) Recoverable surge which the pilot reduces the thrust of the engine and allows airflow to resume. After recovery, the engine produces thrust normally with normal EGT, no excessive vibration, etc. 3) Unrecoverable surge. After reducing thrust or even idling the engine to allow airflow resume, the engine surges again once you command a higher thrust. For 1 and 2, u don't shutdown the engine. For 3, if EGT and other parameters stays within limit by putting the engine on idle, you don't shutdown the engine because: a) An idle engine produces less drag than a shutdown engine, b) An idle engine can still produce electricity and hydraulic to power the various systems.

What would be the thrust reverser setting after 3 engine landing? All engines at idle reverse or the 3 working engines on full reverse?

Why transponder in TA only???

Yes
@gustavonilson

Because you wouldn't have all the thrust available (one engine is not working as expected) to perform an RA maneuver in case you need one. That's why you set the transponder to TA only (RA is not available)

So with RA inhibited in the event of conflicting traffic the other guys transponder would give HIM a RA knowing that your proceeding on course because your not going to get one???

@@markcardwell the other aircraft would not know that you are in TA only - they would just think that you also have an RA😊

I’m an instructor and when a student/candidate I’m training completes all items /passes a checkride, we usually use up the 5-10 mins of our slot to do some exercises. On this occasion it was the engine surge. We had already done 3hrs 45 mins training etc😄
