Good day everyone, how do you do? In this video, I show you what happens when the cabin altitude of an aircraft climbs with a resultant depressurisation of the cabin. First thing to understand is that the aircraft altitude is not the same as the cabin altitude on a pressurised aircraft. In order for occupants inside the aircraft to breathe, the cabin pressure must be maintained to normal levels so passengers and crew can survive. This means the aircraft structure should be strong enough to ‘pressurise’ without exploding as we pump air into the aeroplane as it climbs. We do this by allowing only a measured amount of air to escape as the air gets thinner outside during climb by adjusting outflow valves. Air comes in to cabin via bleed valves and then through the air conditioning packs. These kind of “raw,” lightly-produced videos are my favorite. Seeing how the equipment functions - including what the sim instructor sees - makes it far less intimidating.

This was one of the biggest problems of flight Japanese 123 when they had an explosive decompression. They forgot to put the mask on the 32 minutes flight until crashing to the mountains, they had no judgment because of hypoxia.

I like the way you explain complex things in a easy way, of course it is interesting seeing these contingencies on the simulator, even if I think the noise of air escaping sounds rather silly, of course this must happen also in the real airplane

The hiss noise is an obvious indication that something is wrong. Im suprised that the captain has to drop the masks in the cabin. I would think that it would be automatic on depressurization. What if the pilot is incapacitated by something coming thru the front window? Maybe there are bigger worries in this case.

i think they drop automatically, the switch in the cockpit is just a verification anyway just in case the automatic drop doesn’t work

The masks will drop automatically at a cabin altitude of 14000 feet. The pilots can do it earlier as I did.

once you get the warning does it close the outflow valve automatically and check for control of the valve? I noticed the yellow eicas messages came up on their own .

Now only cargo- all B747 pax are now discontinued

They have both- automatic and pilot action. The pilot can pre-empt if they feel the pax should get on to the masks earlier

Yes they do. There are nationalities from all over the world. A lot of American pilots with USA based crew too.

You didn't really explain the pilot actions. Put on your mask and put the switch for the passenger masks to on. Tells us very little. How about the emergency decent procedure, FMS actions, dealing with amber alerts on the upper EICAS synoptic etc.... I expected more from you as you are normally very informative. What happened?
