Jonathan Walton, VP Business Development - Marine, discusses the Arrowhead 140 frigate during DSEI 2021. Babcock subsequently signed on 16 September 2021 an export agreement with PT PAL Indonesia for the Arrowhead 140.

Selected by the UK Royal Navy as the design solution for its new Type 31 Inspiration Class frigates, the Arrowhead 140 design, benefits from a proven hull-form that has been tried and tested in real-world operational environments from NATO and coalition task forces to national regional and deployed operations.
Functional engineering risks are reduced, informed by integration challenges that have already been experienced and resolved. The frigate’s modular build characteristics mean that it is primed for pre-outfitting with open compartments allowing for rapid assembly, supporting time and cost reduction efficiencies for entry into service.
The baseline AH140 design can be configured to meet the broad range of operational requirements and profiles a global frigate may be called upon to undertake and adopt.

Essentially every major future British vessel will be operated by at least one other Navy in one form or another: Astute for Australia, Type 26 for Australia and Canada -- possibly more; Type 31 for at least Indonesia, possibly New Zealand and many others; Queen Elizabeth for at least Korea, possibly India and Japan if the latter re-arms. Korea isn't building QE class carriers, merely carriers which happen to have the same separated bridge and flyco design. The KVX will be an indigenous ship, mostly designed locally, with assistance from Babcock. The carriers will be around 20,000 tonnes short of a QE class, and with a slightly different layout.

@@krackerman3628 minor point but the T31 has been developed to be a General Purpose frigate, the original Dutch design is an Air Defence frigate so whilst they have similar hulls they have very different roles. Also the RN tends to have many built for not with options meaning they can expand capability at a later time.

These vessels are heavier armed than the large number of Sigma class corvettes that they have. I guess if you have large amount of fishing boats constantly showing up in the area trying to steal your sea life for food, you have to show who is boss. What is even worse, in some areas of the world, these same fishing boats show up with naval warships to obviously challenged your authority, you need to show up with something other than a coast guard patrol boat to show you also mean business.

Steel is cheap, so it makes a lot of sense that the UK would purchase a large, flexible, and expandable platform for their cheaper future surface combatants. Like you said, the more I see of the Arrowhead 140 design, the more I like it.

@Bjørn True, and one major feature that I really like is the Ivar Huitfeld design left a lot of room for future expansion, cable runs with double the amount of space, more modular and easy to work on layouts of machinery spaces that make future retrofits easier and less expensive, and hull design lessons learned from commercial shipping construction to make a sturdy vessel quickly and economically without effecting quality.

@@someon713 Why isn't it possible? Have you ever thought about the possibility that the Type 45 destroyer isn't using the latest version of the Smart-L radar? Just check the specs of the Smart-L MM radar: max range for air targets is indeed 480 km, for ballistic defence it is 2000 km.

@@hjalmar4565 "400 km for patrol aircraft" Do you know how large RCS does a patrol aircraft has? Type-45 has a range of 400km for golf balls RCS (RCS is actually more than you expect but still smaller than a patrol aircraft). A frigate can't power the radar to its' fullest. What's the point of having high number of transmit modules if you can't provide adequate power? The solution is to reduce the number of modules. For example- Israeli MF-STAR has a range of >250km for fighter jets in frigates configuration, but >450km on a destroyer. It also depends how you define something as the standard definition (RCS) of an aircraft, is it 3m² or 5m². BTW, type 45s' main radar is Sampson.

Cyber mill , the Largest 5-axis CNC machine in the world. This would certainly speed up ship construction, designing a ship on computer, naval architects already do that. The difference is we design the parts. Slap down a sheet of steel and the Cybermill Cuts a precise pieces, even multiple pieces from one plate. Subsequently welded together. Ships today are built out of huge modules and blocks, Henry Kaiser introduced this method in WWII because it saves time over conventional keel laying construction, It did back then when ships were smaller. It doesn't anymore because of production volume time. Because the massive blocks today weigh hundreds of tons, they're slow to move and difficult to transport. They require heavy cranes at special shipyards.

I think 64 Universal VLS will be max for 140m length. In the 64 UVLS, 16 SSM 16 UVLS for quadpacked ESSM (total 64) and 32 Aster 30. Basically better than Type-45, which means 64 UVLS is a dream and not possible for a 140m frigate. 48 UVLS for 8 anti ship 24 for Aster 30 and 16 for ESSM (64 ESSM) will be the maximum limit. Displacement doesn't matter, dimensions do.

PAL released the spesification it was 24 vl mica + 32 aster + 16 antiship missile(still negotiate with TNI maybe brahmos or exocet block 3), Indonesia needed a frigate thats as powerfull as destroyer to defend north natuna sea from Tiongkok and maybe the order for this ship will be 4 or 6 because the tiongkok destroyer that come to our territory yesterday give a clear message to the indonesian government what will happened tomorrow so they will well prepared for it like our ministry say "you will get peace if you ready to war"
