I often joke that if I spent as much time in Soulcalibur playing that actual game as I did customizing the outfits, that I'd be one of the top-ranked players. For real, I love me some alternate character costumes in games of any genre - but when they're customizable, I get obsessive about that stuff.

So just some silly trivia; GBVSR will re release Battle Pass costumes, they said so during EVO 2024 interviews SamSho 2019 had Japan exclusive Puzzle and Dragon outfits for Genjiro and Shiki KoFXV also does the Arc System thing of it animates the clothes along with attacks so Garou Terry and Classic Leona are actually different characters, early balance patches tried to nerf Terry, only for the Garou version to not be affected for a while lol

Regarding Smash, Project M/+ has some fantastic alternate costumes. Some are references of course, but some are also original, while still being fitting for the character. Ice Climbers have the comrade climbers outfit, ROB has the different console head outfits, Lucario has a karate gi, etc. It's a great example of what the official Smash games could be doing with their alt costumes. On another note, custom colors are awesome, and I wish more fighting games had them. Really glad CotW is gonna have that as a feature.

FighterZ does crazy manual manipulation of the 3D models (sometimes frame by frame) in order to simulate it's anime aesthetic However, unlike something like GG, it's meant faithfully recreate existing source material from a manga/anime IIRC alt costumes were theoretically possible, but the amount of work it would've taken to completely remake a character's model and carefully re-animate it just for a single costume was comparable to basically just creating a new character instead. So it was basically either a new character or a single alt costume.
@TheSeventhForceАй бұрын
Oh, the NRS part of this video's gonna be _great_ Dissdia 012 had fantastic alternate and DLC outfits too, with the DLC ones being really affordable, and the in-game unlockable ones being just as intricate. Only problem was that some costumes were never released in certain regions or outside of specific promotions: Gilgamesh's Type-0 outfit was distributed through a Japanese magazine (?), Lightning's Aya Brea costume and Cecil's SNES sprite design only came as first print bonuses with 3rd Birthday and FFIV complete, and Squall's KH costume was a another Japanese magazine giveaway but also part of the EU Collector's Edition. If you wanted the costume and lived in the US, you were assed out.

I wasn't expecting you to bring up playstation allstars but thank you, it was a pleasure for allstars to get some credit. As for smash you're right it comes down to licensing but also mandates for some characters due to their respected companies. For example sonic has to be the blue blur with is why "majority" of his colors has blue as the primary in the RGB Hex code cause sega demands it. For further proof look at sonic color's multiplayer mode in order to have a green & red sonic, the avatars you're controlling in multiplayer are robots. For Pacman he is the synonymous yellow cheese wedge with is why we didn't recieved any inky, blinky, pinky, & clyde colors. Not to mention that whole Ms. Pacman rights debacle going on, once again a mandate by namco. Then you have Final fantasy 7 characters with emo versions of colors i.e. a dull pink, or a dull green, or a moody blue etc. Due to square enix believing that this is what final fantasy 7 is, a moody franchise. Last but certainly not least is Pokemon. The pokemon company really, really, REALLY doesn't want you to have a shiny charizard as an alternate color or any shiny pokemon colors. PERIOD. For further proof look at poken tournament's alt color. It's because of colors & costumes, that got me studying colors in the RGB. I've mastered primaries & all the way to quinary colors. The reason? I loved 99% of all the alts of Marvel vs. Capcom 3, yes including those stuck in the original MVC3 such as the black & green spidey suit. But 1 alt drove me into pure madness & spite. It was the astonishing xmen wolverine color AKA bleached wolverine. The reason why I hate it? It's because it's so similar to default wolverine. Yes I know the origins of that particular alt but I also am aware of other wolverine alts they could've picked from 2010 & prior. But I must thank that hideous alt. For it drove me further into colors & I know so much more than ever before. Which is why my video game projects I have a color director as a role within the company. The main job of a color director, particularly fighting games is to make sure the colors aren't too dull like MKX but not too saturated. To help guide the player/s without them knowing. For alternate colors I have a picture of bleached wolverine on the wall so staff members can see THAT & know to never make a color such as that. There's also a sticky note next to it letting staff members know that "no the ink on that paper is not dried, it's just that alt in particular". But enough of me rambling. Thank you Baberuthless.

The whole fiasco with Magneto’s alt costume in Marvel vs Capcom 3 was pretty funny. It’s like, with all the Magneto costumes to pick from, they picked the one costume that got Marvel Comics in trouble. You also got to imagine they had to run that by Marvel. My only guess is they probably thought they were in the clear because it’s not exactly the costume from the cover that got them in trouble; that and Marvel only got in trouble for the cover; like they didn’t have to pull the House of M comics they were selling. But why temple fate? It really sucked they never replaced it with anything. Like OK, you messed up, you had to pull, at least replace it though. Also sucked the alts in that game didn’t have color options, I remember that being a surprise after I bought the DLC costumes. When Marvel vs Capcom 3 was in development, costumes Magneto had that they could’ve picked where: - Xorn - Two different Age of Apocalypse costumes (the main one and the one from X-Men Omega) - The M costume - That New Mutants headmaster costume - The variant of his main costume he has while on the New Mutants and in some of the Acts of Vengeance event - Two different Ultimate costumes - The living Magneto from the Marvel Zombies - The different Zombie Magneto from a cover of Marvel Zombies - Movie Magneto (someone make a mock MVC3 costume of this that looked pretty cool) - X-Men: Evolution (looks a lot like the X-Men Omega costume) - Joseph (Onslaught or Shi’ar) - Planet X

What makes the SNK situation is even more unfortunate is when you factor in the Maximum Impact series: Each character would have a standard and an alternate costume along with a slew of color options. The colors were as complex as the ones from games like Skullgirls, to the point that some costumes even had added details like little items.
@spectorshadeАй бұрын
I'd also point out for DOA5 that pretty much everything that was a legacy costume was a free unlockable you could get just playing the game save a few, and I think they're the best and most fitting outfits for the cast too. So in that regard I think that's something it has over the current FGs' handling on alternate outfits.

despite the low number of DLC costumes in KOFXIV, SNK added some cool visual and sound touches to them classic Kyo- has the sound effects on his hit/block from KOF94 Nightmare Geese- audio is distorted to make him sound demonic ‘98 Athena - more sparkles on her psycho based attacks pajama Meitenkun - his pollow is a cat pillow that makes a “meow” when you send it

Something I've always loved is when they actually do alt costumes in 2D games. In Street Fighter Alpha 3, the X-ISM style changes your character's mechanics to work like Super SF2 Turbo, and actually changes some visual aspects, like making the Hadouken use it's old sprites, but Chun LI gets her whole SF2 look in X-ISM. In King of Fighters after '98, there was a strangely sizable genre of characters that basically existed to be an excuse to add Kyo's older looks into games, be it 2D like KYO-1 and KYO-2 from '99 and NESTS Kyo from 13, and even Kyo Classic from Maximum Impact, which was 3D

Also with regards to KOF XV and presumably City of the Wolves, thanks to the Unreal engine, KOF XV has gotten a hell of a lot of mod support, replacing the eight colors with separate costumes referencing a bunch of different outfits for characters, shoutout to CalypsoDynamo's Utimate mod packs, Amaso's skins, and of course everybody else who've contributed a bunch of developer-quality costumes to KOF XV. I'm willing to bet we'll get a similar treatment with CoTW as well when that comes out

KOF Maximum Impact 2 had a great emphasis on alternate costumes and colors, with the entire cast having wildly different designs as their "Another" variant. You could unlock extra colors by playing the challenge modes or by beating the story, and as a final reward, the last color of the normal version of the characters would always be a third secret costume, with them usually being references to other SNK games (Like Ralf and Clark being dressed as Marco and Tarma from Metal Slug, Rock being Kaede from Last Blade, so on.)

great video! I'd love to do a deep dive into the visual power of being able to link a certain unique fit to like a player in your friend group or local or top tournament level. Personally, I think there's two ways about it. For the single player experience into fighting games, various costumes and customizations are really exciting. For multiplayer, I rather there be a wide range of colors (freely) available so no matter whose system you're on people can have their choice. I love how SoulCalibur does customization, and I think it's at the same time way more cost effective for developers to just have random shapes and structures that can be freely altered, and also very expansive in the amount of creativity it offers those types. I'd love if most fighting games could get that system and it'd be like the old WWE game days where people can upload the recipes online, and people could rate their favorites and download them.

Ahh costumes, always a treat when games have them, and I'd say that's mostly the case with fighting games, even if sometimes it gets screwed up, as with some highlights in this video. (Like wow, I didn't even know that's how M1K did costume selection, to quote Kano, "F#$%in' whoops") As for some highlights I'd like to bring up; Well Soulcalibur 2 had unlockable 3, and sometimes 4P's which was awesome. (Like for example, Sophitia and Cassandra had costumes that referenced Dower of Druaga and Valkyrie, or Link having blue, and purple tunic's unlockable, like the rings in the OG Legend of Zelda, along with his red one being his 2P) And X-Men Vs Street Fighter having Street Fighter Alpha Chun-Li be a sort of secret character is also pretty cool. I also have some thoughts on games touched on in this video too though. First off, Prison Superman isn't the only skin you need to use the mobile game to get, you also need to rate it to get Knightfall Bane, you need to get a Batman card to get Batman Beyond, you need to finish a bonus battle to get New 52 Green Lantern, and you need to get a Joker card to get Arkham City Harley. (Despite the fact that there's an Arkham City skin pack with Batman, Joker and Catwoman already. >_> I don't even like that outfit all that much and that still ticks me off) I'm pretty sure you also need to log in with your WBID to get New 52 Flash as well. And while it is neat that all the Playstation All-Stars characters get at least two alt outfits aside from the default, (And some characters like Kratos, Nathan Drake and Jak having four is awesome) you can definitely tell they were struggling with some characters. (Like Dante just has him without his coat and shirt on, or just without his coat on, while still wearing his shirt; or Nariko having just an extra bit of armor and a face mask, and a dress that still doesn't really change much)

Just wanted to add some insight to the Netherrealm DLC Patch VS Compatibility pack discussion. Back in the early days of online gameplay, patches were relatively difficult to get approved and pushed through to live on XB360 and PS3. That's why a lot of games at the time (Saint's Row, Gears of War, Mortal Kombat) had compatibility packs that were basically empty shells containing the new assets, as getting a DLC approved was less hassle overall. Nowadays, the patching process though still slow, is a lot faster for consoles. One small part of why games are so huge (See Warzone clocking in just under 200 gigs. You need to have the assets for every single skin/gun/character that's ever been released built into the game.).

Really nice video @Baberuthless. For some reading this comment it probably will not make much sense to them but bear with me. I can no longer see the screen but yet I care about the costume my character is wearing. So for instance if a classic costume for a character is available I will more than likely apply said costume. This goes back to when I could see the screen I guess, I can still see them in my mind so I choose that costume. If this is not the case then I will use an AI app on my phone to describe the costume for me, hit or miss I know but it's the best option I have at the moment. I like You @Baberuthless am really enjoying Mortal Kombat 1 at the moment. I was not a fan of how they priced their costumes in the beginning but I think they are doing slightly better now. Still I did pay £10 for Deception Nitara, go figure. I like the costume but that is a shocking price. So why does someone who can't see the screen care so much about costumes? I think in part it's a form of expression, which is something I, like everyone else, cares about. Other than that I have no idea, I do care about it, quite allot.

Hot take: I never liked customization in Tekken. All that time and resources could be spent on making more standard alts for the characters. Plus, rarely you'll see custom alts that look cool since most of the options just look like clownshoes type garbage. By far the worst offender is SC6, where characters don't even have alts anymore, just color swaps. We're going backwards. The golden standard for costume alts is Dissidia 012. Not only would the alts show on the HUD next to your health, but many of them would also change the character's appearance (if only marginally) during EX Mode. That's dedication and attention to detail that I greatly respect.

Dead Or Alive 2 Ultimate totally spoiled us back on OG Xbox with like a million unlockable costumes for everyone. Nowadays the series is infamous for its DLC costumes totaling over a grand USD if you wanted everything (which like… no, there’s no world where that could ever be worth it). I also love World Tour Mode and have put over 100 hours into it. But the costumes are the biggest dropped ball in this entire game, next to the sad 4 character seasons. It's criminal that *COLORS* for base outfits are locked behind Drive Tickets and the costumes not allowing Drive Tickets is a disappointing confusion. I paid $90 for my preorder, no way I'd spend another $100 on costumes for just the base roster. Especially when there's a stupidly expensive "Play against other players on Street Fighter 6" fee called PS Plus that I can't pay for right now.

Playing Dragon Ball Z Budokai 3 so early in my fighting game fandom kinda spoiled me, as many of the characters had a pretty robust selection of outfits. Wanna play as Goku with a torn gi? Krillin with hair and tan sweatpants? A look that was in one anime filler episode? Alternative outfits are one of ny my favorite things about fighting games that use 3D models, and it makes me really sad that they're almost always either paid or in a Battle Pass... the latter of which is just about my *least* favorite things in video games. Also, the Mortal Kombat 1 segment made my head hurt LOL

Something I might add is that (for at least on Switch and PC) MK 11 did eventually let player 2 use custom variations for local versus, I picked up my copy of the game a year or two back so I never really noticed so I never knew it initially being player 1 only until this video.

I usually stay away from downloading outfits when they cost to much money, but I'll take a free one for sure. I prefer to unlock alternate outfits in-game than to pay for them. Otherwise, I'm just fine not having alternate costumes. I do like to create new outfits when the option is available. I just hate how they are exploiting us nowadays.

From what I recall, the 7th Gen thing of "compatability packs" had to do with Sony and Microsoft's *fees* for hosting patches. There was basically a tax every time you put a patch out, but there wasn't if you put out a DLC that effectively served *as* a patch? Ultimate Alliance 2 did this, Soulcalibur V did this, Sonic Unleashed put patches in PAID dlc funnily enough, it was a very weird thing that existed through the entire generation.

iirc, in Street Fighter Alpha 2, you can play with Chun-Li wearing her Street Fighter 2 outfit, which is different from her with the SF2 outfit and SF2 moves

When capcom released the nova dlc costume in ultimate marvel vs capcom 3, it caused a stir. The new nova comic was supposed to release first, but capcom put the costume a month before

Honestly the 3D fighting games do it the best. The Namco titles did it the best. DOA actually make the games more replayable by making the Coustumes unlockable. DOA2U actually have 20 Coustumes for Kasumi, Lei Fang and Ayane! And DOA4 game me nightmares by doing it because the final boss cheap as hard! Also Street Fighter X Tekken actually have great alts. Also GVG mentioned you in the latest video on fighting games.

I kinda wish that in MK1 since the story of the game is that we're having all these different timelines invading that for costumes we would've gotten the various default costumes for each character on the roster from each game that they appeared in, like for example if you pick Kitana you'd have every default costume that she's had from MK2 to now so that that if say MK9 Kitana is your favorite version of her you could pick her or if MK4 is your favorite you can pick MK4 Kitana and to have all the various alternate costumes be DLC like say that Summer Kitana skin from MK11 or her Deadly Alliance alternate.

I'm usually a boring costume1/color1 person (that's the look that drew me to the character), except in Tekken, although Fiona costume in SF V made me seriously consider playing Cammy. It's a shame that some alts of the base costumes in T8 are behind the character customization, which makes them tournament illegal I believe, cause they are way better than some of the official costume 4 (looking at you Azucena and Reina). I bet ArcSys relied on Cygames' gacha money to pay for the Granblue alternate costumes. What's interesting about Granblue is that some alt colors do change the outfit a little bit (usually putting a bit more fabric on some of the women) Doubting it's a tech issue that's stopping Capcom from pumping out more costumes for SF6 (you'd think switching to an internal engine would give them more freedom, but weirder things have happened in game dev), especially with the level of customisation on avatars which use the same moves. I would generally check alt colors more often if they didn't also necessarily change hair color (I know it's a weird nitpick), so I like that Under-Night has some choices that only change the color of the clothes.

About the MK9 patch, I'm a little fuzzy on the details but I believe that in the 360 days every Title Update had to go through certification with Microsoft. Every application to cert had a financial cost. Perhaps adding as "DLC" was a way to avoid this? It's not the only 360 game I've heard of to be weird about things that could be "just a patch" nowadays.
@JorgeHighwindАй бұрын
In SF6's case, I think Capcom is trying to avoid getting into the same situation they got with costumes in SFV: There were too many of them, and some characters got just a few while others (mainly Chun-li) got a full wardrobe

I wish SF6 let you unlock last year's DLC costumes with Drive Tickets. Now that I've unlocked all the music, I don't have much use for my drive tickets.
