Chickens are good because it an easy form of farming that doesn't need much land. Any suburban backyard is enough. My chickens lay almost year round. I live in a fairly warm climate( South Australia). And I have a rooster I'm about to eat. Self-sufficiency is a form of freedom. Eggs from the supermarket taste like shit. Eggs from my backyard are delicious. Fuck the government and fuck being controlled.

If you ever modify this mobile coop or build coop number 2 - have you considered making the internal perches "removable"? That way when you need to clean the inside of the coop you can lift these out for a clear workspace and when you are done - put the perches back in and let the hens do their thing.

Many don't understand. It's at least 5 months before you get an egg and that's a small egg. You're feeding during that 5 months. Then people complain when a dozen eggs are 5 dollars or higher because they can get them for 1.50 at the store. It's not the same egg or taste.

For people interested in the American Bresse, we raised and processed some batches last year. A couple of notes about the breed, 1) they do normally take until week 14 to be at process weight but I have processed as early as week 10. 2) I love most of my Bresse birds and raised the most reasonable, good natured 9lbs at 20 weeks rooster I could have imagined from this breed. 3) The hens are good layers, about an egg a day to every other day and I have two that are straight up friendly but that does not seem normal. 4) I did not like them for meat. I actually went to Cornish for meat for one primary reason, the leg meat. Folks, if you've never had heritage chicken, please take a taste test of one before going both feet into a heritage bird cause the leg meat is NOT like store bought. I researched for days online and NOONE talked about this part. Because these birds are very mobile, scratching, roosting, etc, their legs grow a good amount of tendons and ligaments. So the taste of the meat is great, but the texture is long muscle fiber versus Cornish birds which sit down almost all day, gain weight super fast and are processed at 8 weeks resulting in tender leg meat with little in the way of tendons and such. The breast meat on the Bresse (rhymes with bless) tastes the same however, it is quite a bit less in volume. Overall they are a great breed especally if you get them from a reputable breeder, there are a few not so reputable out there, and if you are good to go with long muscle fibers, give this one a try!

I always use a respirator mask and swimming goggles to do that nasty job, just to be on the safe side, but that's because I get sick easily. Also, i now lay down heavy-duty plastic on the coop's floor and sorta roll up the sides a little and then pull it all out, dumping the poop onto the ground that needs the nutrients. Saves hours, energy, my back, my arms and my hands. Easy peasey!💫

I have raises breese birds for years. They are grate layers and the roosters are laid back. There is a system for finishing them for the table but that has to do with caging and milk mixed feed. Not into all that work and cost. We still prefer the taste and size of the Cornish cross.

Do you think you could reduce the height of the chicken trailer by a foot or two reduces the amount of wood to build I realize might make it harder to work in side (not a good idea) maybe you could put a door on both ends a Or make a rake and shovel with extra long handle for cleaning Isn’t just thinking
