Avocado was the first solid my son ate and I agree it was very difficult for him to pick up (very slippery) and extremely messy but he loved it! I don't know what he loved more chasing it around the table, squishing it all over, or the taste but to this day (age 3) it's one of his favorite foods.

Oh my goodness she is such a cutie pie!! We introduced solids to our son when he was around 4 1/2 months. We offered them more consistently around 5 months and now at 6 months he eats 3 meals a day, drinks diluted infant juice and breastfeeds. We give him regular foods and purées and he is getting better and better at it everyday. Babies truly are amazing and it’s so cool to see how much they’re actually capable of!

I did feel that giving a baby puree is not the way this should be.. if we were in nature there wont be any purees available.. just this choking fear.. but i had the same fear about co-sleeping before my dd was born.. so i guess here it is the same thing thank you so much for the video - very inspiring and informative and your daughter is supercute!

I was lucky to come across BLW with my eldest in 2010 so I have never done traditional weaning. We had a great experiences with BLW with child one and two. We are soon going to be embarking on a new BLW with our third child. I wouldn't do anything else. It's def not for people who are nervous because neither you nor your baby will enjoy the experience. However I urge everyone else to at least try BLW. There is nothing nicer than to have your baby share the family meal from the start.

This video really helped me understand blw with my first. He didnt have teeth till he was 14 months but he was eating solids straight out of my plate from 6 months ( with supervision, obviously). He is not a picky eater at all and even likes earthy flavours like beets and broccoli.. here to watch again with my 2nd. Thanks for the refresher course.

Love this video!! My little guy is 4 months old and we are definitely going to do this! Our daughter is 2 and she refuses to eat pretty much anything and it all started when we completely switched her over from baby food. I made all her baby food but for some reason she loved that more than real food. Our pediatrician said that it is just a phase and we're praying it is. She loves smoothies though so that is the only way we can get veggies in her. :)

Rachel this is an excellent video. I don't have any children myself yet but my late Mother done this with my brother and myself and always talked about the benefits of it and always recommend it to me when the time comes. Some may not agreed but its good to put the information out there from someone with experience so people have a clear understanding and allows them to choose which is the best option for them. I think you are a wonderful Mother and doing a great job both parenting and video/vlogging. Keep up the good work. Best Wishes from Ireland xx

I started out giving my son pureed food, he ate them for about 3 weeks. Until suddenly he began to show no interest in being spoon fed and would much rather eat what I had (fruits and veggies) from my plate. I then googled like any other person would.. and came across Baby Led Weaning. We're in our first week of eating steamed veg and fruits. He loves it! I do have a few questions. Did you get any bad reactions from any friends and family? & how did you deal/respond to it? I feel like I've been getting a lot of weird looks and uneasy feelings from my family and friends because of their concern. Help!

Thank you so much for this video! My daughter is 3 months old now and she's my third child (they are all 3 years apart) and I wish I had heard of this with my boys. I read about it before I had her and was really interested and now I am even more so. My boys are great eaters and have never been picky to foods but lately it has become hugely obvious that my youngest son is texturally picky. He has even thrown up on the table a few times, even at restaurants. I've really had a hard time figuring out whether he is just not wanting to eat his veggies or whatever it is or it is actually a texture that bothers him. I am so excited to try this with my baby girl in a few months if she's ready and I'm ready to slow down the nursing lol.

I am watching this video I am almost in tears! My daughter is SO ready for solid foods and her speech pathologist suggested baby led weaning but she was born with a swallowing disorder and I am TERRIFIED (caps just don't come big enough) to start giving my baby solid foods. Ugh! This is so hard for me and I am prepared and know what to do if she were to choke. Daddy and I are both Paramedics and we also have dealt with my daughter choking since birth (though rare now) but it's so difficult to let her try to let her feed herself. I really appreciate this video though it was informative on led weaning and we shall see if I do this!

I do a bit of both. I give my 8 month old solid foods like bananas, blueberries, potatoes, peas, full meals everything and have some since she was 6 months old. She learnt how to use her mouth and chew food before she needed to so most things were spat out but it works on finger work and the pincers it help massively and now she is an excellent eater and will eat pure and solid food solid more than anything else

There's a lot of people on the fence about this but I wanna say I think it's very important that you should ONLY do what you are comfortable doing with your baby!!! "Every baby is different" it's very important for the parents to make decisions for their own child. Don't think just because you see this baby eating like this that your baby should do the same, that's not to say that your baby is not ready maybe he/she is. But please make your own decisions based on what do you feel would be best for your own child 😊🙏🏻

My close friends and family had all started with purees so I didnt even think not doing that was an option. I do this with my daughter. Kudos to you for starting with meat which is one of the hardest to digest even for adults. I never even thought about allergies, I just feed my daughter food. Hard to give veggies though since she only has two teeth. I always recommend starting with fruit since it's the easiest for all humans to digest. I am just entering meat products and it's scary. If you have any suggestions on veggies, please pass them on. Like how to k feed her legumes which are high in iron and protein and great for digestion but look like a handful of choking hazards

I think mashing food thoroughly to a purée-like consistency is safer than leaving chunks in the food, yet not using a food processor unless it’s a food that can’t be mashed. Mashing it instead of processing is healthier if they can safely eat it, cuz the cellular structures of the foods are not destroyed so the baby can obtain more health benefits from food.

Love your video. Wanted to let you know I've read that if they have trouble picking up the food because it's slippery (avocado) they say you can mash up cherios or wheat germ and coat them with that so they can pick it up. My son just turned 8 months and I started him on puréed and have been trying to do finger foods the past few weeks however he has absolutely no interest in picking up food and putting it in his mouth. It's been a little stressful for me cause I don't know when he will be ready. But all I can do is let him take the lead for when he is ready. I do make all of his baby food homemade which he loves.

Great video. My 7.5 month old has been eating since about 5 months. But I chose to start with pureeing her food. Now, she's becoming more independent and wants to feed herself. Of course, I'm nervous to give her chunks of food and choking. Will she still instinctively know what to do with solid food if she's used to purées? I have given her pieces of pancake, cheese, today we did peas and she loved them! But got a little nutty and shoved too many in her mouth and started gagging. I noticed you were giving your daughter blueberries one at a time, which I'll likely have to do as well. The thought of giving her a chunk of meat freaks me out.

Cecilia Malagon our youngest is allergic to milk and simply bc he’s no longer breastfed, means nothing about a sophisticated palette! He loves all his purées and bigger pieces of food that we give him. They develop more and more with each new food offering, but I do agree they have more of a taste for different foods due to what the mother eats. Fed is fed, either way my children weren’t defined just Bc they were bottle fed verse breastfed. Some people just can’t or like 2 out of 3 of mine were allergic...formula feeding doesn’t make anyone a bad parent!

(Sorry if it's in the video). My little one goes to the sitters during the day so I'd prefer to just do this at home until she's been doing it for a little bit, and is doing well at it. And how would you explain it to the sitter or the grandparents who are used to baby food and are worried about choking, etc? I know I'm the mom and can whatever I please...I was just curious. Very informative! My little one is 5 months, he is my second and really thinking of going this route. Question, when do u introduce purees/baby food? or do u just skip it?

+Claudia M we did BLW weaning too and you just skip purees. No need for the extra work!

Very interesting! I am from Colombia and babies start eating some solids at 3 months. I was fortunate that my kids pediatrician here in Atlanta, respect and actually support my traditions and diet with my 3 kids. They never eat baby food everything was made fresh and not preservatives.

I'm sure the babies weren't given solid foods right off the bat even in the Stone Age. People even used to chew the food for the child and then feed them that chewed food, so don't think children were not treated as adults with no special prep.

Feeding time with a spoon was great bonding time. Purees and rice cereal for the first 6 weeks of eating is not bad.

How old is she now? My third kiddo is 5 months old and I'm definitely interested in trying this method instead of purées. Might wait a little longer but excited to try it out.

Hi Rachel your videos are helpful thank you but what i want to ask you is i am a breastfeeding mom and my baby just started taking solid this month , she is 5 month, Do you think i could mix her cereal with formula because pumped milk is kind of too much for me? peace!
