I hope this helps someone who is going through a name change with their child. I had my oldest son at 17 and his dad was in and out. I was married by 20 and still, with my husband of 18 years, we have 3 boys together. My oldest son started asking to change his name around the age of 6 I had the “ names don't make you who you are” talk. It helped for a few years. Around 12 he mentioned it again so I decided to speak to his dad about his request. It was a hard no on his end which was so frustrating since he hadn't even seen our son since he was 8 and even before that it was here and there. I had a talk with my son explaining that it was out of my hands but he definitely would have options once he turned 18. Again it shut things down for a little while.. Once he was 16 and got his license he brought it up again but this time it was very different. There was a hurt that I could not deny and his reasonings were also different. Before it was about being like his brothers this time it was about having his first legal form of ID and he did not want his last name on something so official including his diploma. I again called his dad who refused so I left him with this food for thought. You have never been there, sacrificed, or done anything to show him love. You can either do this for him or have him resent you even more either way I promise he will change it at 18 all on his own. A few weeks later I received a call from his dad asking me to send him whatever he needed to sign for the legal name change! Happy to say we are all Jacobs my son graduated and is now in college so proud of the name that should have always been his! ❤ Hang in their mamas and keep supporting those babies any way you can!

My eldest has mine and dad's last name. Next 2 have just dad's. My 5 year old has asked why we have different, and it was the main reason I put my last son under my name, instead of his dad ( only 1 with different dad). If we do get married youngest will be change to dad's name, and so will I. And the older ones will be offered the option when they get to 18. They're under court order so we can't even double barrel all of them, which is rubbish.

OMG!! The whole last name thing! I wanted to have my mother's maiden name also..because I have no attachments to my last name. My 2 son's have their father last names because I wanted them to have that....I married my 2nd sons father but divorced so never changed mine...I feel like both of y'all in many ways....crazy how life is ...but guess I'm not alone!

my dad's mistress attended my mother's funeral . something I hope nobody will have to go thru . years before my mom passed she told me she had her suspissions . in my heart I knew she was right on with what she was witnessing , I couldn't agree with her because of the status of her health . she was a cancer patient and suffered a whole lot in the end . it hurts so much knowing that my dad's infidelity could have been the accelerator to her final stage in life . I keep thinking she could have been here longer with us if she had a loyal husband and would never have to assume the worst in a marriage while having cancer. my Dad always reminds me that my mother would be ok with this because she wouldnt have wanted him going thru grieveing alone . I call total bs and it's his pride and ego he puts first before anything else .

Hey, as listening, regrading women changing their last name, I remember when I got married, in NYC, my husband also had an option to change his last name. The man is allowed to change it to the woman's last name or they both can pick a random last name.

Also, the funeral thing I had a friend who told me I couldn’t go to the funeral and I said to her I respect that, but if your need to talk to someone who has lost their brother since I has lost my sister and Mom, and it turned out that she just needed someone to talk to and had no one to speak to about kissing her brother so she took it out on me. She needed up telling me she lied and her brother wanted me there, and she just just don’t know how to ask help. Sometimes ppl just don’t don’t know how or what to say.

My husband and I have been married 11 years and I still carry my maiden name 😂. I do go by both last names unless it’s legal paperwork. I was a teen mom also and my two oldest children carry different last names and our 4 children carry his last name. 🤷🏻♀️

I have a my ex husbands last name because we have a son, and his first gf made a HUUUUUGGGGEEE, deal about it, but my ex straight up told he he would NOT grieve me to change it, and asked me to keep his last name for out child, and if I got remarried it would be up to me. My ex was so angry that she would send me book, after demanding I went back to my maiden name, and which my Ex and I made it clear that was a no, no. She said she refused to have to the same last name as me. Then my Ex made it clear that I don’t want to be remarried and I told you (her) that from the jump. It was a battle, but I will keep his last name unless I got remarried, which I don’t think I ever will.

My daughter is hyphenated. So is my ex husband.lol has still has my surname
Itd be easier to have the man and woman hyphenate both their names than make up a new 1 plus the kids can have both like their parents
