I'm surprised you didn't mention how Baby SOMEHOW managed to: 1. Possess Rilld. 2. Set up an elaborate trap that required killing everybody on a ship about to fall into a star. 3. Somehow manage to go from M-2 to said ship faster than the heroes' own spaceship, despite them having a huge distance advantage. 4. Doing ALL OF THE ABOVE in less than 1 minute of screentime.

Finally a moment to actually be positive about GT. While I have many opinions about how this saga ultimately plays out? Once Baby is introduced, the early episodes with him are AWESOME. For one thing, I love how they play with the tone, taking Dragon Ball out of the usual lighthearted fun and going for something more horror, in particular it reminds me a lot of sci-fi horror like Alien, Invasion of the Body Snatchers and films of its type and it works so well in selling Baby as a villain that's unlike anything the Dragon Team has ever faced which when considering this is a sequel to Toriyama's series is what I want to see. New ideas, new threats, new stories that give us opportunities to further explore characters. I also hold quite a bit of nostalgia for these episodes since Trunks getting temporarily possessed and trying to purge Baby from his system was one of the earliest pieces of Dragon Ball content I've ever seen and thankfully one of the few moments that holds up.

One thing I have to give Toei credit for even though they do take a lot of missteps with the property is genuinely trying to do something interesting with the villains in Dragon Ball. Some of my favourites in the entire series are Toei exclusives. Bio-Broly isn't a character really, but as an obstacle to overcome he's very interesting. You can't conceivably fight the "Culture Fluid", but if Goten, Trunks, Krillin, and 18 don't do something about it, it's going to gobble up everything. It's a great concept for a fight because it needs to be dealt with, but Goten and Trunks and the rest of them can't just punch it until it goes away. It's a one-of-a-kind match finish across Dragon Ball's entire franchise. Toei exclusive. Baby invades others, rather than absorbs others. This distinct difference makes for a very interesting watch as Earth's defenders aren't "Defeated" traditionally, but persuaded and join Baby's cause. We know how strong these characters are, so it's a terrifying concept portrayed with great effect during GT's runtime. Toei exclusive. I unfortunately don't think this one goes anywhere, or is really played up as much more than comedy. But Haze Shenron is actually fucking *DOPE* it's a cool character that once again tries to change the objectives. The guy's toxic abilities are unlike any other fighter they've come across at this point. It's like Bacterian but taken somewhat seriously. I unironically think this guy has a lot of potential that Toei didn't utilise, but at least they tried to make it not about "Punch the other guy until he drops" and in fairness, that is what happens at the end. Cleanliness saves the day against Haze Shenron, not punchiness. Toei Exclusive.

I did enjoy the fact that the encounter with Baby here is actually rather short and not drawn out, as opposed to all the battles with the main villains that get stretched across multiple episodes and scenes. Baby fights the heroes, letting them know he is still alive and a threat, but he escapes to plot his next move, so there is no clear winner, making the conflict more interesting.

Funimation rendered Planet Pital as “Vidal,” so it took me an embarrassingly long time to make the pital-hospital connection. Regarding Rild’s death - the show makes it clear that his transformed state is effectively invulnerable, but he’s killed in his base form, which isn’t established as immortal. Stupid nitpick, I know, but gotta work with the crumbs this show dishes out.

I just remembered that back when GT first aires on german TV (around 2006 I think), like 70% of the episodes were completely cut due to it airing around 3PM, thus having to adjust for child protection laws. DBZ got mostly around this problem by airing from 7 to 8 PM. I think I just never watched this part of the show. The dragons as well as Super 17 were also mostly cut out. They could have basically just not bothered to bring the show to Germany this way, it wasn't fun for anybody.

The next set of episodes I hold them in high steem mainly cause I have an official VHS copy of them. It was kinda of a tease to have watched so many times Baby controling Earth almost fully and getting to the cliffhanger of Goku trapped in that trickster game dimension without the option to know what would happen next cause I only had that set of episodes. As a set-up for the climax of the arc I think it's pretty neat. There's some interesting stuff there to unpack focusing on the villain as the center of this episodes is similar to when the original series focused on Majin Buu though in that case was to know him better and see he doesn't have any morals and that's what payed it off with Mr.Satan, here with Baby is more like just watching his plan unfold from his perspective. Gotta praise they kept the gag of Mr.Satan getting out of "on top" either way no matter what happens thanks to his plan of hiding inside Buu.

I‘m not sure about that. Even young boys tend to prefer the more physical mature female characters over the little girl character (if both options are present). And since this is Dragon Ball, with GT banking on attracting the already existing fanbase rather than new ones, the audience know about the other existing female characters. It doesn’t help that Pan is traveling with her grandpa all the time. She doesn’t feel like a kid hero, but a hero‘s sidekick in form of a granddaughter instead.

Ehhh sorta, as a little little kid, I was pretty much only into bubbly hyper feminine girls. Idk when my I started finding tomboys or just generally other personality types appealing, but I definitely developed a crush on pan when I was a kid, but she wasn’t the catalyst. Having crushes on characters that are/were kids especially younger ones is always weird to talk about because 9/10 I was either 2 to 10 years younger than them. But as I aged, so did my taste obviously lol. So I always wonder how people traverse that when talking about crushes cause I see tons of folk talk openly about how they still find Danny phantom hot, and at least in that case his actor was over 18 and general design can be read ambiguous enough to be kinda seen as teen or an adult??? Like there are some characters like most of the mha girls, sailor scouts or asuka that I still have a crush on as an adult But characters like pan, toph and blossom from ppg I can only see as babies now lmao Honestly dragonball specifically is weird, because as a kid to now I always found Bulma attractive, but even as a kid only saw chi-chi as attractive when she was an adult. Discussing this stuff is interesting, but kinda confusing, and with anime fans specifically can get bloody. I just tend to go on vibes, design how they’re treated in the story etc

@@otaking3582 With Sailor Moon, most of the main cast are teens, so it’s easy to pick any of the main five over, you know, Chibiusa. I don’t think any little boy picked Haruka or Michiru since the two of them are so ingrained as a „couple“ it would be weird to choose them at all. But Rei over Asuka? I mean, okay. But 4Kids did de-age Rei from (presumably) 11-12 to 8.5 when she first showed up, so… I know you mean obviously Rei when she’s 13-14 in season 3 onwards, because I doubt you liked her that way when she showed up in season 1. She definitely isn’t 10 years old in season 3.

I am very excited about the next set of episodes. There is some plot twist dogshit shenanigans with Piccolo, but all but everything up until Majuub vs Baby is easily my favourite part of GT. This is also the only part of Gt where it feels like the Z fighters are actual people, which makes it all the more terrifying when they inevitability fail and lose. Making us fall in love with Goten only to show him succumb to Baby actually has real impact because the series bothers to slow down before then. I know this barely relates to the episodes *here*, but i just cant wait for you to cover them.

Sidenote , I think Goku being scared of needles might be somewhat logical. Think about it, Goku isn't really made of steel. He is soft in touch, he didn't killed Chi-chi in bed. The reason he can take explosions to the face is because he's using Ki to protect himself. It's a defensive aura that he can turn on, turn of, sometimes instinctively. That explains Krillin could throw a rock at him before the Cell Games. If Goku is relaxed and doesn't suspect any danger, he can get hurt from something normal humans would (like Bulma slapping him on a head) So needles are something very terrifying to him. Something that will cause pain, something he knows is coming and yet he's not allowed to use ki to protect himself.

I like to think that too, but the very first chapter of Dragon Ball contradicts this. He gets SHOT before he ever begins to have a grasp on ki, auras, and things like that, and his body just TAKES IT. I'm sure he eventually uses ki to protect himself from powerful attacks, but things that would hurt a normal human DO NOT hurt him. His body is just that strong.

But that stone thrown by Krillin seems to contradict it.

The argument about this mostly stems from Super Goku being sniped by a laser gun after letting his guard down against Freeza. That is even more egregious considering Goku was a god at that point and should have easily shrugged off the "common ray beam"

Well 1) It was established Goku couldn't go SS3 for a while because he wasn't used to his kid body 2) Literally half the Buu arc was comedy relief despite Buu threatening the ENTIRE UNIVERSE. Besides, they could just use the Namek balls to wish Earth back (I think), Goku not taking it seriously makes sense. Dude's the strongest guy out there, and he's done the world saving thing enough

I honestly didn't ever think they were going out of their way to sexualise Pan in the previous stuff, like...throughout Z there's a lot of equally neutrally framed shots of Goku from behind that we don't really scan as sexual because he's the Hero Guy. And her other lines in previous episodes read to me as like, one of the expressions of her as this liminal character uncomfortable about being on the threshold between different age groups and social groups and trying to assert herself as this vague idea of being an adult. The moment here /was/ kinda uncomfortable for me to watch, though, just on an instinctive level.

To almost be fair to GT, Trunks Pan and Goku can move faster then the human eye can see, so them getting into space suits in time does make sense.. Only you don't see them using their super speed to do so, and as you show, we keep seeing them walk slowly. It would've been cool if they animated them zipping and whoosing down the hallways stopping at each door before speeding back off like the Flash, showing them use their skill sets for something that doesn't invole fighting to solve a time senstive problem that most other heroes wouldn't be able to, kinda like putting out forest fires with ki blasts

I think the main thing that makes the deer joke with Pan incredibly uncomfortable is her age and the presentation. Like, obviously. She’s a child, and while it may not be presented as tidilating it is still a sexually charged joke at her expense. Even without the line, the show still frames it in that kind of manner with how her shirt is lifted up and whatnot, I feel. Like the dog food ad, if it had been with a character who it is more acceptable to make those kind of jokes about, sure. That can be funny. But including Pan in it just… makes it weird. It comes off as poorly thought out at best and uncomfortably tone deaf and creepy at worst.

I always wondered where Goku’s fear of needles came from?? He grew up in the woods, I think his first time in a hospital setting was after fighting vegita, and he is a fully formed adult who has had major injuries that would make needles seem perfectly harmless by comparison. Maybe he internalized the beat down vegita gave him and projected his fear of Oozaru into the fine point of a needle which occurred shortly after the battle.

I’m biased but I like the idea of it just being a “curtains blue” situations in this case. Regardless of backgrounds, people develop irrational fears all the time. Having him just have one at random weirdly gives him more depth and feel more like a person to me. Honestly I wish more stories did that with their characters, just give them random traits and tendencies that have 0 to do with who we know them to be. It lets us fill in the blanks and makes them feel more real because it communicates that they’re not always on or 100% their ideal selves all the time. Like real people, there’s always apart of them we’ll never get to know or see, so some tendencies may have reasons to be that we just don’t know about, and some don’t. Well I won't deny it more than likely is trying to somewhat entice younger viewers, but at the same time many anime does things like this to underage girl. Technically speaking Bulma is underage too, but it isn't nearly as disturbing to most because she appears more developed. It's a bit of a double standard but I can't entirely blame people for getting uncomfortable. But if Dragon Ball can get away with full nudity with a 16 year old, then some potentially suggestive moments with Pan shouldn't get so much flack.

I actually these earlier episodes from Baby. There s some bulding of the character. And it is actually a good vilain, the best GT offer. The invasion on Earth is great. Unfortunately when the gang arrives to Earth is poorly executed. Trunks is easily discarded. So we only have 2 characters to deal and Pan is always useless. The fights are extremely unimaginative. Super saiyan 4 is cool, but the way to obtain is silly and the fight are really underwhelming. The concept is great, but is very badly executed. Of course, you almost forget ubb participation, which he has minor role. Could be so much more epic.

God Rildo is so boring... doesn't bug me much that they get rid of him in such a contrived and lazy way. I do really like what you said about the big picture cause that is what I like about this arc. The big picture is great but the details are where it really crumbles apart. Love your analysis on the Deer scene. The scene is controversial, massively so but by itself, it's an innocent gag. What made it so controversial is the context, the way the series has been directed and scenes framed up to this point that leads the viewers brain to seeing it as creepy. Really highlights the importance of directing and how it can guide a viewer to a better or worse experience. Then there's the importance of proper writing, with the Baby possessed Child. Baby is such a horrifying idea but it's so much more horrifying when you are made to relate with and/or care about what is being destroyed. I can laugh at a Goku afraid of needles joke when it's that, a joke, not a plot point that gets a massive amount of focus at the cost of actually focusing on the important things. I love Baby, I wish the series had better writing to truly bring out what's great about him. What it does do with him is still good though, it just could have been so much better.

Okay, but...early on in DBZ, Piccolo explained to Gohan that Goku and Raditz were fighting faster than the naked eye could see. Is it then really that hard to believe that Goku and Frieza's battle really did take five minutes, and this rescue could take 10? I'd barely have a care in the world either, if I was a superhuman who perhaps has a near infinite amount of time to get something done. That's what my reasoning is when watching that, and literally any other mention of time in DBZ/GT/S/*insert spinoff media here*. Like...there's a reason Piccolo explained the concept so early into Z, after all! 🤣

The problem is the talking, not the fighting, it's clear that even at Early Z characters were fighting at the speed of light. hell, Goku was Faster than Lightning thanks to his training with Mr Popo as a kid. but they don't talk at light speed, i really doubt they do.

the person who does the subtitles for these dont know how to do subtitles for youtube videos. all of the subtitles show up at the first wood, and then its nothing for the rest of the video.

This bug's shown up in a lot of KZbin videos, and I haven't heard an explanation for it yet.

@@BagOfMagicFood I think the reasoning for it is that one of the methods of adding subtitles to videos is to give KZbin the text, and they sort out the timing. Immediately afterwards, before their algorithm has sorted the timing, it does dump the entire text file at the very beginning. As to why it's continuing now, after it has already correctly timed it, is something I don't get. As I said, they're showing up fine for me. It sounds like a fluke, and I'm hoping the OP could get them to work after reloading the page.
